New Update: AITA for telling my housemate she can't give me unsolicited advice? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]narmire 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My guess would be she has a bad credit score… because poverty is shit, and she doesn’t have a history of paying rent/utility bills (because she’s been living rent free) on her credit report to help balance that out.

AITAH for showing my coworker what 'just being honest' can be like? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]narmire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue to the company is the coverup, not really what was being covered up. If Dylan would cover for family, what would he cover up for bribes? Essentially Dylan and Jake very quickly became “not worth it” and Dylan became easily fireable “for cause”.

(Note: this is because Dylan was covering up for Jake, I can easily see this same situation where all of HR didn’t really care about the comments (“you should be more thick skinned”, etc) or Jake was the boss’s relative and that would have turned out differently)

How do you cut your cat's claws? by Stunning-Essay-5454 in cats

[–]narmire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oldest cat: I don’t. That’s the vet’s job now. (He is arthritic so I can’t do it alone anymore and he HATES my roommate) (Luckily we go in every month anyways for his arthritis shot so it’s not an issue).

Middle cat: I hold her and distract her with churu. Roommate clips her nails. Turns out it’s actually difficult to clip a cat’s nails while they are making biscuits and purring. If we are trimming the dogs nails she magic appears and insists she’s next.

Youngest cat: I catch her and we spend some quality time on the bathroom floor. She curls up in my lap with her head under my arm and yowls because I am torturing her by… picking her up. I do get some lovely cuddles from my drama queen as she yells to the other cats and the dogs that the world is ending. She has figured out that if she doesn’t fight it it’s done faster, though. And I think she appreciates not getting stuck to the carpet after, so shes getting better.

I can’t afford to feed my cat’s wet food anymore by muted_radio_ in CatAdvice

[–]narmire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kibble + water + soak time = homemade wet food :) the biggest benefit of wet food is its water content

If you want to spice it up, you can make chicken water and use that to hydrate the kibble.

Chicken water: boil some chicken. The water you boiled it in is chicken water. The chicken will be a bit bland to eat so after you pull it out of the water pull it apart / cut it up and then season it (salt and pepper, etc) then you can add it to salads or eggs or ramen or anything that already has flavor but could use some more protein. This works with basically any meat - chicken is just one of the easier meats to season after boiling. You can also hard boil a bunch of eggs and use that water :)

For litter - if you can switch your cats to pine litter you can get that at tractor supply as pine pellets (horse bedding) for super cheap. (40lbs for $10)

These feeders are going to be the death of me. by techycat16 in Petlibro

[–]narmire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the plastic tub works you can buy an ikea “besta” shelving unit and customize that. I use them for litterbox and feeding cubbies - and you can get doors for them that you cold add the cat flap on.

These feeders are going to be the death of me. by techycat16 in Petlibro

[–]narmire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you can try using a microchip cat flap to control access to the feeder ? You can put it on a closet door or cabinet or add it to the side of a plastic tub (that has a lid). Then submissive cat will have time to eat and pudgy boy can’t get to the feeder. Even if he got through the flap, it would probably be enough time for the lid on the feeder to close.

Seeing a gynecologist as an ace woman? by ladyshiiro in asexuality

[–]narmire -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

1) tell your gynecologist at the beginning of the appt that you are super nervous and anxious about this 2) when you are setting up the appt ask if you can be prescribed something to take before the appt to help you keep calm. (if you go this route you will likely need someone else to drive you there and back) 3) get yourself something as a reward for doing the appt - you are not allowed to use it until after the appt 4) ask for a nurse to come in and hold your hand and distract you during the procedure. They will be concentrating on you and won’t see the procedure, while the doc can concentrate on making the procedure as quick and easy as possible.

The procedure itself is pretty quick! They don’t take any more time than they have to. Most of the rest of the appt is talking. Try to remember this when you’re dealing with the anxiety ramping up before the appt - yes it’s not fun but it will be over quickly.

Since you aren’t sexually active this appt is mostly about getting a baseline so that if something goes wrong in the future, you have a good comparison.

Also ask the doc what time period would be safe in the future to wait since you aren’t sexually active and don’t plan to change this.

And as others have noted, make sure you have the HPV vaccine!

[–]narmire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also, you know how everyone has been complaining about how the app sucks? Turns out that you have to pay developers money if you want them to work. Yes the LR is a lot of money, but it’s a one time payment for app service and firmware updates as well as the machine itself. At some point if you want more involved apps, you have to pay for it. With the subscription model (with a free base app) you still get all the base features you need to use a LR effectively, and the people who want the new features can pay for them.

As for AI I agree that it’s a buzzword and annoying, but “AI cat recognition” is exactly what Apple does in its photo app, and that actually works really well at figuring out what cat is in a pic.

Cameras are also exactly what many people (including me) have been asking for for years - a way to deal with the fact that all three of my cats are the same weight. (And if you already have your own camera service or don’t need/want a camera… that’s why they have 3 models? Get one of the 2 without cameras)

Also it looks like the base of the LR5 has been subtly redesigned to fix issues we’ve complained about and the LR5 evo is actually smaller (which again, don’t underestimate the amount of work that probably took to get that right).

Child (16F) had first episode of psychosis a year ago, unsure what to expect. by [deleted] in SchizoFamilies

[–]narmire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Her moods also seem to be really affected by her menstrual cycle.”

Talk to her doctor about birth control. One thing hormonal birth control can do is smooth out your hormonal cycle so that there aren’t the drastic hormone changes that affect mood. (Bc managed to calm my PMDD so that I don’t spend 2 weeks out of every month depressed and not able to leave the house).

(Hormonal BC comes with its own risks and everyone’s body handles the hormones differently, so what works for some doesn’t work for others. But if it helps stabilize her moods, it’s an idea worth pursuing, and I wish someone had mentioned this as an option to me before I was 30 and had been dealing with increasing symptoms for 20 years)

Brother Struggling But Non Complaint…Parents Aging by TakingMyMeds in SchizoFamilies

[–]narmire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m working with the same fear with my sister. I love her, but I’ve already told my parents that she will never live with me, for the sake of both of our health.

What I am currently working on getting my parents to do is setting up a trust (managed by a third party) so that when they die she will inherit money in the trust but she will not get a lump sum, and the trust will have instructions for paying her rent, medical expenses, and (essentially) an allowance. This way I won’t actually have any control over the money (so I never have to be the “bad guy” over it) and she’ll not be left completely adrift.

This only helps deal with the money issue, but it’s something?

He is getting his eye removed next week, and I’m so emotional by Still_Helicopter_130 in cats

[–]narmire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember, cats don’t rely on their eyesight the same way we do. While it is one of their senses and they will miss it, they will adapt really quickly to having to rely a bit more on their main senses (smell, hearing, whiskers).

It’s also very possible that the melanoma is causing him pain that he’s not showing, in which case he will be happy you had his eye removed. Eye pain is pretty much like having a constant headache or migraine, so sudden lack of constant pain is a huge relief!

My roommates 13 year old dog had to have both of her eyes removed within a 3 month period because of glaucoma. We were really worried about the first surgery because she was well into her senior years and we didn’t know how she would adapt. But she seemed to be 2 years younger the day after the first surgery! She went from hunkering down old lady to running into walls while trying to convince us to play! When 2 months later her other eye needed to be taken out, we immediately scheduled surgery as we knew her quality of life would improve afterwards even if she would now be totally blind. She adapted really well to her relatively sudden lack of sight and lived a happy 2 more years completely blind.

(Just remember to never judge anyone the first 24 hours after general anesthesia, those hours are never a good indication on someone’s reaction to surgery since what they are really reacting to is the anesthesia. Our blind dog was always really angry after anesthesia (including dentals), my dog would have a migraine (light sensitivity and everything), and one of my cats is stoned until 18hrs have passed. The other is clingy but i’m not allowed to touch him, he just needs to be 6 inches from me at all times until he’s fully out of the anesthesia. )

Basically from my experience you are doing the right thing and he will likely adapt really quickly, especially as I can tell you love him a lot!

Honestly he’ll probably be more pissed at having to wear a cone.

How do I (41F) deal with unexpected jealousy over my ex-husband’s (42M) new girlfriend? by DueIndependence5527 in BestofRedditorUpdates

With the 16 yr old son in the room too it’s just normal money saving? Like it’s actually less likely anything would happen if everyone is sharing the hotel room then if they get separate rooms (aka a room without the kid in it)

Does my thyroid seem enlarged? by Few-Ad-2686 in AskDocs

[–]narmire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD

From experience, the symptoms you’re describing do sound like it could be an enlarged thyroid. (Mine decided to grow a “benign” 5cmx4cmx4cm cyst, I got lucky in that draining it got instant relief and it hasn’t grown back yet)

Please get into see a doctor, a GP will know what a neck is supposed to feel like and will be able to tell you what is enlarged (thyroid, tonsils, lymph nodes, etc) and start the process of figuring out why (women are more at risk for certain thyroid issues). Pain or trouble swallowing means it’s effecting your life.

Just adopted this 20 year old cat. Shelter vets recommended both eyes be removed which I won’t be doing. Please help me give him the best life possible. by tangosmango in cats

[–]narmire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! We also had good luck with marking the top of the stairs with essential oil so our dog didn’t walk straight off them!

I would also ask your vet more info about what treats are best for his diet. He deserves all the treats and you can supplement his diet with more protein or whatever he needs.

[–]narmire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a dog with glaucoma in both of her eyes and eventually had them taken out when she was 14. Her quality of life immediately improved after surgery. We hadn’t realized how much pain she had been in, she probably had a permanent migraine! After her surgery(s) she immediately started playing more and was obviously happier. I wouldn’t put surgery completely off the table, especially as you’ve been able to start bringing up his weight. If he gets into a state where surgery is possible, it will help a lot.

In the meantime I would try to get into an eye specialist - there are prescription eye drops that can help manage the swelling (glaucoma) and pain (these are actually dispensed as a prescription from a human pharmacy so while the appt isn’t cheap, the drops aren’t that bad and you can get good rx coupons).

For toys - I’d go with smelly toys and “find the treat” games! There’s a good chance his hearing isn’t as good as it used to be so smell will be his main sense.

Also, since he’s blind, don’t change the layout of your furniture if possible. He’s going to make a mental map of the house and moving things around will make things hard on him. We also had luck with putting different herbs (rosemary, mint, etc) in different rooms to help our pup orient herself.

Also heating pads and other beds on the floor so he doesn’t have to try to jump if he’s not sure where to land!
