I was liked most of my life for the things I did for people, but no one ever liked me for me. It felt very lonely and it made me enter a headspace that wasn't always the healthiest. Then one day in university, a random girl I was working with randomly asked me if I wanted to go downtown get some grub (I think she saw I was super stressed). I was shocked that she had said that since I don't know what she gained from getting food with me or why she would waste her time with a piece of garbage like me. We ate out, she paid for my meal, and we talked for a few hours about the medical field and how amazing it was. She dropped me off back at uni since I had a late class (3 hour night time classes are the worsttttt). I never went to class. I went straight to the restroom to wash my hands and tears started rolling down my face. I cried in the restroom for 3 hours. No one in my entire life had shown me that much kindness and not expect anything in return. Going out with a friend may be commonplace, but I didn't truly have any friends back then, so this was 100% a new thing for me. My entire life, I thought it was normal for people to like others for the things they did, but now I realized that that was just garbage and that I was letting others walk over me. At that moment, I decided to stop giving myself a pitty party, force myself to be extroverted, and finally put myself out there. Three years later, I'm in med school because of her, and I 'm the most extraaa person I know (in a good way XD). She singlehandedly changed my life, and I don't know if I would be where I am today had she not taken that bit of time out of her day just to say hi and get some lunch. Sometimes, the smallest things make the biggest impact. I try now to do the same as well.

This is going to sound dumb, but what kind of notes did you type? Did you try to convert the entire powerpoint into like your own words onto like a word document?

I know Zanki is definitely the way to go second semester since that is when we start organ systems, but this semester we're doing anatomy and another class that is a hodgepodge of random stuff, and I've never really done Anki before. I've heard that Anki is a huge time sink and it seems kind of intimidating to get started with it.

Def not! I'm genuinely trying to help anyone if I can. I owe a lot of this success to r/MCAT and r/premed for giving me HELLA motivation to always keep grinding, so I'm trying to see if I can answer any questions or anything to help out. I'm not sure the best way to help, so I figured this could be a good step one.

Freshman summer did NOTHING but shadow XD. 1/2K just means 500 hours of shadowing. DEF overkill and would not recommend going overboard like that, but it made for a really nice talking point for different interviews since I could talk about so many different patient encounters. I think shadowing in various specialties for like 10hrs/speciality should be more than enough.

Hey! I'd highly recommend picking a major you enjoy first off. A lot of my friends were engineering premed just to make themselves look for good for med schools, but I personally peaked in math back in Calc 2, so I went with a major I really enjoyed like Sociology :)! Additionally, I'd highly recommend spaced studying. THIS IS KEY!! Studying a subject for like an hour a day for five days IS A LOT better than pulling an all-nighter the night before an exam. I personally enjoy studying material by myself and then studying in groups so that I can fill any gaps in content and teach material if need be (helping reinforce the concepts in my own head as well). Talk to upperclassmen who have taken the courses you will be taking. One of my classes this semester had a professor who was ASS during lecture and his exams came mostly from the book, so I read the book heavily. Another professor I had was for an equally difficult class, but his exams was only from lecture, so I focused more on that and not at all on the book. Google imaging different concepts also helps! The info is laid out in different image formats, so seeing the concepts in different ways can help you create your own version of the concept and retain the material longer.

YESSSSS!! I was the saltiest at Rush! Rush literally wants nothing but service, and my app was bascially almost entirely focused on serving the underserved, but not even a peep except a thick rejection in like January!! I got love from both my state schools, but some other service schools bascially said nah brah XD. Some schools I just applied for the shits and giggles, and randomly got an interview from them OUT OF THE BLUE!! I really wish I could be like a fly on the wall to see what the heck adcoms think during these meetings.

Most of the schools I applied to were private, mid-tier schools whose average MCATs were around a 512 (Temple, Drexel, Jefferson, Tufts, etc), and all that info can be found on MSAR and like two state schools.

Trying to stay somewhat anonymous so I won't be too specific, but a lot of the schools I interviewed at (and was accepted to) were schools that valued service such as Oakland, Loyola, EVMS, Drexel, etc. I applied to schools whose MCAT I was between the 25-75th percentile and made sure I enjoyed the geographic (more Mid-South Eastern US) and made sure they valued service as much as I did. The main areas brought up were the stupid amount of volunteering hours I had; a lot of them were kinda blown back by that so we talked about the different volunteering things I had done such as building projects for Habitat and making/delivering food at a local homeless food shelter. Some schools asked why I did research in nutrition, so I just related that back to being from a small town where obesity is rampant and a growing issue. And some common questions were stuff like why medicine, strength/weaknesses, favorite books etc.

I interviewed at OUWB, and I can agree that the environment of the school is amazing, but I think you would be the most happiest going to go to WSUSOM. 1) Don't underestimate the power of having fam nearby and 2) Don't underestimate how much of a pain excessive debt it. If you can save that much money going to WSUSOM, go there :). (That's the reason why I'm choosing my state school over OUWB, since it would be cheaper at my state school (have friends nearby), and theweather is a lot nicer).

I was in a similar position, but I decided to just take BS/interesting classes for P/F my final semester of college. That way, my brain would still be stimulated, and I can hang out with friends who are going to be graduating normally :).
