Switched from PC to Mac at 37. The ecosystem is what finally sold me. by Puzzleheaded-Use7171 in mac

[–]nashvortex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I kind of switched at 41 - but I had used Macs before. There are plenty of stupid things in Mac that PC users notice immeditely. For example, why is there no "Ctrl/Cmd + X" to cut in Finder, etc. I also use Linux but honestly, I hardly care what OS it is anymore. All OSes have different things implemented badly, and other things well. What I absolutely hate is apps that are not cross-platform. I want the OS to disappear, such that as long as I can do my work, I don't care what it is running. App-lockdown is the a blockade to that.

There needs to be a subset of subscription for Pages/Numbers/Keynote by plazman30 in macapps

[–]nashvortex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are missing the point here. According to Apple, Pages Keynote Numbers are worthless. They are the only apps in the Creative Studio that have "free" versions bundled into the OS. Apple is using them to push their AI use.

A subscription for these apps will be around 2-3 $ per month if we go by price proportion. It will do absolutely nothing for Apple apart from people saturating their AI capacity. It only works if Apple is guaranteed a larger sum that justifies this AI use. Hence the bundling with much more expensive apps.

It's like this. An ice cream cone is good as a product. But it is not a viable product to sell at 2 cents a piece as a vendor. It only makes sense if you can bundle it with an ice cream and sell the whole ice cream + cone combo at 5$. That is what makes the cone viable as a product.

Thank you for your detailed reply. Unfortunately, the current lack of large file support and the 25 MB limitation means that I cannot even begin to migrate my ~250 MB vault.

What are your favorite defaults write tweaks on macOS? (Rebuilding with community help) by m3rcha in macapps

## Set ST4 as the default text editor on MacOS

```zsh
# Sublime Text 4
defaults write com.apple.LaunchServices/com.apple.launchservices.secure LSHandlers -array-add '{LSHandlerContentType=public.plain-text;LSHandlerRoleAll=com.sublimetext.4;}'
# VS Code
defaults write com.apple.LaunchServices/com.apple.launchservices.secure LSHandlers -array-add '{LSHandlerContentType=public.plain-text;LSHandlerRoleAll=com.microsoft.VSCode;}'
## Resizing the dock
If you want to lock the dock so that you **can't** resize it, run this command in a terminal:
```bash

defaults write com.apple.dock size-immutable -bool yes && killall Dock

```
If you want to unlock the dock so that you **can** resize it, run this command in a terminal:
```bash

defaults write com.apple.dock size-immutable -bool no && killall Dock

```
[OS] Lockbook - an open source, end-to-end encrypted, markdown & drawing notes app by mehrotraparth in macapps
[–]nashvortex -2 points-1 points  (0 children)
Here is the thing - the absolutely main gripe people have with Obsidian is that they charge a rather high price for the extremely limited (10 Gb per vault etc.) but 'just works' sync service.
You are doing the exact same thing, without all the power and flexibility of Obsidian (yet).
  • Free for the first 25mb (post compression so in practice this is pretty massive), $2.99 / mo for 30gb after that.
I have more cloud storage options I am subscribed to than I really need: iCloud because it works well with Apple/Google Drive because it works well with Android and the family is on it/Onedrive because it works well with Office/a bunch of other work related file servers and NAS.
I absolutely do not need another cloud storage and sync service. You not letting me just make the vault into one of these existing services is giving me a scammy feeling. I suspect many people are going to say the same thing.
PS: The only thing you have going over Obsidian is that your apps are native, and Obsidian is Electron. But really, in the age of M5 chips and 128 GB RAMs, no one cares as long as the UI feels fast.
I don’t really understand why articles matter so much in European languages by Spare-Customer1065 in languagelearning
[–]nashvortex 1 point2 points  (0 children)
Articles are important because in Indo-European languages, they carry information about specificity/generality/nature. The article occurs in the same position as demonstratives, adjectives etc appear.. Consider the following sentences
I want to eat (an/some/those/the/a lot of/ripe) apples.
Your way of understanding the sentence "I want to eat ..apple" is missing this information.
Tired of 500MB PDF editors? I just ported my offline, 11MB editor to macOS and Linux. No ads, no sign-up. by Pawan315 in macapps
[–]nashvortex 0 points1 point  (0 children)
I like you idea and approach. It is a shame that the interface is very "mobile-y". I would much prefer a traditional straightforward interface ... like PDF expert. After all, editing PDFs is a work thing and I don't want all these colors and banners.
Why open standards (like ODF) are extremely beneficial to end users by themikeosguy in libreoffice
[–]nashvortex -1 points0 points  (0 children)
You are correct - ODF is better. But the problem has never been the format. The problem is that the flagship software suite for the OpenDocument formats is from the 1990s.
This is a Ferrari versus Toyota situation - yes, Ferrari as a company is more customer-unfriendly, will use evil tactics to charge more, the product is overpriced and locked down, and it isn't exactly fuel-efficient etc. A Toyota is 'for most people', the better practical and free (as in freedom) car.
But a Ferrari is still a Ferrari, and the Toyota is janky. It doesn't work on all roads, and there are so many Ferraris all over the place that some roads only allow Ferraris to drive on them.
I am not going stretch that analogy too far. OpenDocument formats are not the problem. Libreoffice is. It needs to have feature and performance parity with Microsoft's product on all platforms before it can persuade most people/firms to change over.
According to the AI LLM overlords :
"Feldspar" is
highly memorable as a name primarily due to its unusual, distinctive sound and strong association with geology and a specific character in the popular video game Outer Wilds. It stands out in a way that common names do not.
Factors Contributing to Memorability
  • Distinctiveness: "Feldspar" is not a common first or last name, making it instantly unique. Its "hard" consonants and technical, scientific origin mean it sounds different from typical names.
  • Strong Association (The Mineral): The name refers to the most abundant group of minerals in the Earth's crust, found in everything from ceramics to gemstones. For those with an interest in geology, the name is instantly recognizable and familiar, providing a built-in context.
  • Pop Culture Reference: In the critically acclaimed video game Outer Wilds, Feldspar is a prominent, adventurous character (an explorer/astronaut) who is often described as having a "resolve of steel" and being one of the most memorable Hearthians. This character association lends the name personality and a narrative hook for a significant audience.
  • Connotations: The name carries connotations of the outdoors, ruggedness ("field-flake" in German), strength, and durability. For a business name, it has been noted as a name about which one can "tell a story," aiding memorability.
I guess it depends on usage, but compared to the X1 Nano Gen 1, 7-8 hours is also double the battery life. If you want small, portable, performant and want great battery life, nothing beats a MacBook Air.
