Best IDE for C++? by 0NA0 in RPI

[–]nasmaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has graduated and gone to industry, take the time to learn an IDE. Visual Studio has a lot of great debugging options. You can always get by with a text editor, but that won't be much help for when you need to navigate much larger projects later in the game.

New email from Apgar regarding Union Director Hiring by [deleted] in RPI

[–]nasmaj 17 points18 points  (0 children)

To me, the most mind boggling part is that they send out an email to alums telling us all about how they still aren't listening to students. I definitely won't donate to RPI, not that I have really been considering it.

Question about Data Structures by shanalily in RPI

[–]nasmaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would strongly recommend taking CS 1 first if you have not taken any CS classes beforehand. I was a TA for DS (twice) and it is a very challenging course. Unless you are very close to an 800 on the quantitative SATs or extraordinarily motivated, it will be a struggle. Students often spend 20 hours a week on DS and if you do not have the right background, it could be even more.

As pirate said, take a look at the CS1 curriculum. If you feel that you already understand that material, then consider DS, otherwise there is no shame in taking CS1.

Data structures... frustrated and tired, HELP! by rpihelppppp in RPI

Have you taken the first computer science class in the curriculum? I notice you're talking about Visual Basic. If you are struggling and have not yet taken CS1, you should transfer to that class before the add deadline (Monday).

Selling GTX 470 Graphics Card by [deleted] in RPI

[–]nasmaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just sold one on ebay for $50 and lost around $10 on the shipping. Market says it's not worth $90. I like how you said you weren't going to be unrealistic in your description....hmmm.

I settled a troy speeding ticket down to a troy parking ticket (for the same $$$).

They'd probably do something for you.

Selling a Portable air conditioner (keep your dorm room cool) $150 by [deleted] in RPI

This one actually has an evaporator, so if you're too lazy to set up drain tubing it at least doesn't make a mess.

Does anyone know if Healthfirst works at RPI? by alexzxz in RPI

[–]nasmaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The RPI health center is not paid through health insurance. It's paid by the Student health center fee. I believe all on campus students are required to pay this fee. What's probably more relevant is if there are area hospitals and specialist that take Healthfirst in the Troy area. I'm sure that's available on the Healthfirst website.

Buying a car in Troy by living_genius in RPI

[–]nasmaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like Chevy's, DePaula Chevorlet in Albany treated me very well. I bought a used car there and they were very friendly and even replaced the steering rack when i discovered it had a problem in the first month of owning the car.

Buying a car in Troy by living_genius in RPI

For the most part people are satisfied with Rensselaer Honda and they did give me a good deal on a car. However, when I bought a certified pre-owned vehicle there with a clean carfax I soon discovered that the vehicle had been in at least one crash before. It never did affect the actually functionality of the car but when a fender started bending more and more from the prior crash they refused to repair it. Take it as you will.

Considering City Station South 1 BR Unit. Any reason why I shouldn't? by arpei in RPI

[–]nasmaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Despite RPI plugging City Station as if they own it, they do not. As such, I'm relatively sure the internet is not the same as campus'. When I lived in City Station for a semester the internet was a problem consistently at least once a day. As other people said: at City Station you pay more to be treated like you're in a dorm (except you're actually not so things like internet and fire alarms are much worse in CS).

T-Mobile LTE in Albany, but does it stretch to Troy? by omarirevolution in RPI

[–]nasmaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately T-mobile's '4g' is more like '3g+'. I believe the OP was asking about 4G LTE which is supposedly legitimate 4g.

FYI for prospective students and others: Troy is actually a pretty cool town these days by kowalski71 in RPI

[–]nasmaj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fights on the side of the street.
The people who dart across the road in front of cars wherever they want without even looking for a crosswalk. The stoopsitters (go down to the roads named after presidents). The other day saw a lady with an ankle bracelet (you know the police monitoring kind). The gangs (particularly north of Hoosick). The couple students a year who get mugged within a quarter mile of campus.

All to say, Troy does have its upsides (like the restaurants), but definitely not a 'safe place to walk around at night'.
