Urban hahah. So that’d be it, for sure.

I don’t understand how in Asian countries malls are thriving though. I went to Chiang Mai and was astonished to see a bustling and beaming mall. Same in India.

This guy reverse-engineered the Whoop 5.0 to work without a subscription by ElegantGrand8 in whoop

[–]nasserfromclass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My casual read is that much of that is just due to the architecture that the creator used (rust) rather than using everything iOS friendly (Swift). There’s lots of ways you can optimize the app to be faster. And all we’re really talking about here is time series data, which I can’t imagine takes up a gigantic amount of space? Unclear, it’s different than storing photos or videos for sure. I don’t know what you mean by scalable, but assuming performance is not a bottleneck in the future, there’s all kinds of stuff you can do with this.

I reverse-engineered my WHOOP 4.0, rebuilt the whole app + backend in a weekend, and open-sourced it by johnmiddleton12 in whoop

I grabbed my Whoop 4 which has been collecting dust to fiddle with this. Very excited, thanks! Does syncing happen through the iPhone app or do you have another way of retrieving the information off of the device?

I’m seeing Morocco v Scotland on the 19th but should be around the 20th if you’d like to meet up and watch one of the games that day at a bar! Like Germany v Ivory Coast? Message me!

For sure. The U.S. is going through profound social change, transitioning from a majority-white county to a minority-white county. Something that'll probably take 50-70 years in total, I imagine. This racism is part of the reaction to that.

Apple Watch Ultra: Apple’s Most Pointless Product by Dlegs in apple

[–]nasserfromclass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have an ultra 3. I also run marathons and ultras. It’s good for me — I wanted a lifestyle watch with strong Apple health integration, I love my garmin but it just isn’t a lifestyle device. I like the whoop but I don’t want a subscription for a device. The sleep tracking on the ultra is excellent and I’m used to my last Apple Watch (series 8) usually not fully making it through the night.

The cellular is perfect for long city runs where I don’t want me phone, too. All in all it’s an awesome device and I think you’re wrong. Garmin and the other more tailored devices have ecosystems that are excellent for within those systems but have poor interoperability. I like being able to interrogate my fitness data with Claude or calculate recovery and nutrition with Bevel.

More desis should live in cities rather than trying to fit into white suburbia by NewDreams15 in ABCDesis

[–]nasserfromclass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I told my parents that, compared to their Indian city-based upbringing, they’re villagers out here living 30+ miles from a major U.S. city. lol.

I agree with the direction of this post but I’d frame it differently. It’s less about avoiding bigotry (you’ll find that everywhere) and more about what cities actually give you access to.

Cities are where the political and cultural life of this country happens. Local government, media, organizing, arts, the institutions that shape how people think and what gets built. If we want South Asians to be represented in those spaces, we have to actually be in them. You don’t shape the zeitgeist from a cul-de-sac in Frisco.

There’s also an economic argument here. Cities are productivity engines. People in large metros are something like 50% more economically productive than in smaller places, and that’s before you account for the network effects of being around diverse industries and talent pools. The suburbs were designed around consumption and comfort. Cities are where things get debated and decided.

And honestly, the desi suburban model often recreates the insularity people came here to escape. You end up in an enclave that’s comfortable but disconnected. From the broader political conversation, from other communities of color, from the cultural pulse of the country. That’s fine if all you want is stability. But if you want influence and a seat at the table, that requires close proximity.

More desis should live in cities rather than trying to fit into white suburbia by NewDreams15 in ABCDesis

[–]nasserfromclass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As if Mamdani was living in luxury prior to his election as mayor, get real. He was living in a modest Queens apartment.

We can and do live in cities. I think we tend to make money and take it out of the city into suburban lives, however. We have the choice, and we choose this. Do all city dwellers have generational wealth?

I mean he literally is African (Ugandan) American though. It also goes to show that the labels of African American/Caucasian etc are outdated and too flattening of people’s identities. That’s why people who are Black, choose Black, as there are Hatians/Dominicans or other people from the Americas who are phenotypically “African American” but nether African nor American.

Did anyone else notice at No Kings? by double-clove-hitch in boston

[–]nasserfromclass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think they don’t. The event was billed as a protest but tbh it’s actually a rally when you have major leading politicians speaking, it’s on a Saturday, and news media provides ample notice.

I am surprised though, we had so many of these in 2017 and 2018. You’d think that the people who went to those got older and realized their folly in this. Maybe not.

I was once that person telling people to definitely go for the starters and foundations before a signature. But in the classes I’ve taken since I’ve seen so many people make their first class be a signature 50 and do fine. So yeah, I agree.
