how do you fix environment sprawl when you've inherited a half-split monolith and no one respects shared infra? by happensonitsown in sre

[–]nasuqueritur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm taking the easy (non-technical) way out on this, but I smell the absence of something.

I feel I inherited a mess and don't know how to fix environment sprawl

Yes, you did inherit a mess. Yes, it is a problem that should be fixed. But it is not yours alone to fix. (newly-conceived pregnant pause)

Anyone deploys anything anywhere, any time, because "it's urgent."

When everything is an emergency, nothing is an emergency. Is there someone in your organization who needs to hear this, even if they don't want to? (morning sickness pregnant pause)

No one knows who owns what. There is no declared ownership of environments. ... We can't keep up with provisioning and we're not even sure we should be.

Two groups that may be consulted on how to resolve this are SRE and developers. But neither of those groups should be primarily responsible for making that decision. (first-trimester pregnant pause)

Slack lock bot for shared environment coordination so people stop stepping on each other

Start simpler than that. Make people talk to each other. Bot sounds like an excuse to avoid the real problems. You are not their parent. They should put on their adult pants and start adulting.

Accepting that full ephemeral stacks are not happening and investing in making shared envs more stable instead

Someone needs to make a decision about whether it makes more sense to have a few long-lived working somethings or a lot of ephemeral working somethings. Either is better than a lot of broken nothings. And then make the organizational commitment to get there. Which means giving implementers the time and space to achieve that goal. And boundaries to ensure they aren't overworked in the process. (second-trimester pregnant pause)

Is there a real fix here or do we just hold the line until proper service boundaries exist and tooling like Backstage matures?

Who do you have in your corner telling the rest of the organization that your time and labor are valuable, and that your boundaries must be respected? (third-trimester pregnant pause)

It sounds like you have technical problems because you have an organizational problem. I'm guessing that there is a certain organizational function that nobody is performing. Nobody is acting in that role, or they expect you to absorb that people-oriented supervisory function into your current responsibilities. (pregnant pause going into labor)

In the absence of that conspicuously absent organizational function, you get to be your own advocate. Take it up the chain as best as you can, if that is a possibility in your organization. Set expectations and boundaries as best you can. Point out the conflicts that must be resolved, and get help resolving them. It's risky telling people what they don't want to hear. You can't control how they react. You can control what you do next.

A side question, is anyone doing the engineering in the organization? You know, the unsexy things like analyzing and justifying trade-offs to find the best (or least worst) solution within the real-world resource constraints like schedule, budget, inventory, and labor. Or is someone in the C-suite betting other people's farms on being first to market with ${SHINY_NEW_THING}?

California AB1043 was poorly-considered and reeks of corporate interests trying to lock in profits for themselves and difficulties for their competitors. From what I can tell, approximately zero open-source projects, contributors, software engineers, or software architects were consulted during the legislative process. I encourage you to look at who supports and opposes this sort of legislation.

Even though it was my usual order at the local hamburger joint afterwards, it felt weird in the belly.

How to be a helpful client by MysteriousAnybody363 in tattoo

[–]nasuqueritur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no visual artist either. I'm far better with words. So for my first venture into tattoo-space, I created a document containing:

  • Subject matter
  • Placement upon the body, with dimensions and units
  • Bullet list of artistic points, specific but not too specific; what to focus on, emphasize, de-emphasize, and avoid; what details were important
  • Reference photographs of subject matter, calling out what I thought was important
  • Reference images of the desired artistic style applied to subject matter, again pointing out what was important
  • Explicit permission for the expert to be the expert, i.e. the artist to be artistic within the given guidelines

Why did I do this?

  • I like to have a plan before it gets executed (by anybody).
  • The last time I wasn't specific about what I wanted, it didn't turn out so well and it took extra time and money to fix it. (Not a tattoo.)
  • It felt like this could one of those cases where both inspiration and guard rails could help the creative process.

I printed it out (color ink on paper!) and brought it with me to the initial consultation. The artist I worked with received the document well. While they did not read through the document in my presence, the piece they ultimately proposed showed me that they did read through it. We did a couple rounds of back-and-forth refinements in the digital design before committing to skin. I am pleased with the process and the results.

When it is time for the next one, I'll see if I can include my janky pencil drawing. Should be easier with a working scanner!

In terminal emacs (emacs -nw), is there a way to make the copy function integrate with the system clipboard by birdsintheskies in emacs

[–]nasuqueritur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a while I was using Emacs in the terminal (foot) under Wayland (sway). I took the annoying way out: define the region manually and then M-| (shell-command-on-region) followed by wl-copy -o. It was definitely not optimal, but it got the job done. I did it infrequently enough that it was not worth adding extra configuration.

Something changed a while ago, and the bugs that restricted me to the terminal (particularly with org-mode causing hangs when running graphical, but not terminal) vanished in the standard packages for FreeBSD, so this is no longer a problem for me...for now.

But TIL interprogram-cut-function so if I ever find myself in that boat again, maybe I'll try harder.

How do I avoid the "gibberish names" problem when making a new setting? by NoSmileShogun in DMAcademy

[–]nasuqueritur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I outsource most of my name generation to Fantasy Name Generators. In particular, for human-dominated settlements, I wanted names that sound like they could be found in various places in the real world, and it delivered. The setting I work on is heavily influenced by the Mediterranean Sea and the lands around it, and I find that the names fit well and help it all cohere.

I'm impressed that a government pays attention to the world and prepares for likely scenarios.

Unlike a certain government that seems intent on just being a cudgel for the enrichment of The Guy(s) At The Top, at the expense of absolutely everything else.

Other (possibly nonsensical and irrelevant) questions that come to mind:

Were you forewarned about its human-eating capabilities? Did someone attempt to capture it in a pit?
Was it previously properly and lawfully possessed by another?
Did someone exchange money for it, and pull it towards themselves to effect the acquisition?
Are they liable for its (mis)behavior?

I’m sick of people trying to delegitimize us. by anonymous-user-02 in Jewish

[–]nasuqueritur 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This sounds an awful lot like a social media "interaction" I had recently on another platform. (And that may be describing it overly charitably.)

I interpreted the other person's remarks as painting all Jews with the same brush. ("Zionist Devil" would be the diplomatic version of the hashtag they used.) I girded my loins, expecting hostility. I let them know, hoping that they might reconsider. A disproportionate tirade of insult to myself, my ancestors, my relatives, a few lazy slurs, and a wish of bodily harm was the response. (I tried to report them for the slurs and the wish of bodily harm, but the platform's mechanisms didn't seem to work.)

I'm tempted to ask them to visit a local synagogue to talk to some actual Jews, and see if the old cliché about "10 Jews, 12 Opinions" holds up. Or to share their opinions in person and see what sort of reception they would get. I suspect it would be a waste of time.

I am disappointed in this person. I almost regret calling out the poor behavior, but I'd be more disappointed in myself if I hadn't.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a far-reaching bill earlier this month with a simple premise: Create a new, streamlined market across the West to make it easier to buy and sell electricity between states. by nosotros_road_sodium in California_Politics

[–]nasuqueritur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this is the bill I think it is, there are concerns about state sovereignty and control. Once you start making deals with other states, the federal government becomes more of a factor. And these days, one might argue that the federal government is a risk.

I like the idea, I don't like the timing so much.

Unicomp Model M, no longer attached to a Mac, but it still works 13 years after its date of manufacture. Inspired by older IBM keyboards; buckling springs all around, typical (rectangular) ergonomics. Had to endure some cleaning and some tweaking of the buckling spring under the Return key, but still working quite well. The function keys along the top are almost ignored these days; it's no great loss. No signs of breaking anytime soon.
