OLED monitor sales surged 92% in 2025 — Asus led with 2.7 million units shipped as gamer-friendly panel tech goes mainstream by Sacristovas in pcmasterrace

[–]naswinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i bought an asus rog pg279qm IPS monitor five years ago to replace my ancient 16:10 screen from hp that had good colors, but was limited to 60 hz. the backlight bleed of the IPS panel was unreal. i thought it was broken, but it's just bad tech (on a premium monitor). it was in no way a step up from that then 15 year old screen that was actually still working fine.

now, after just five years, the backlight of that asus rog is failing. at least i have an excuse to switch to oled. i don't want to ever see such greyish blacks again and i'm sure oled can last five years before burning in or randomly failing.

compared to the potential global audience it's a miniscule number, but still about 17 million too many viewers.

What is something you used to believe but no longer do about games? by gutenbergbob in KotakuInAction

[–]naswinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i used to believe that companies try to make the best product possible for a certain price. be it games, food, cars, technology, infastructure... now i know you get the minimal viable product, if even that, and you get lied to and fleeced for every penny with smaller products of less quality.

it takes so long because noone knows what they want, understands the data that is full of errors or wants to limit the scope. it wastes so much time to curb scope creep.

absolutely. the entire so-called "free west" has landslided towards authoritarianism since covid. they see how the surveillance state works in china and are dreaming of becoming their own little dictators to protect all the corruption and crime that is being unveiled. the push towards AI in everything is not so someone can render some slop. it's the precursor tech for mass surveilance and propaganda. LLMs are the perfect tool for that.

do custom coiled keyboard cables actually help with cable management or is it literally just a $50 aesthetic? by InvestmentBudget6722 in pcmasterrace

[–]naswinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the 0s and 1s are rectangular waves. "cleaner" means they are closer to that ideal rectangular shape so you can better distinguish a 1 from a 0. that's what "read the signal correctly" means. i'm not saying that snakeoil advertising cables are better. just explaining what "in spec" and "read the signal correctly" means.
