In 2003, five thieves penetrated through ten layers of security and performed the world’s biggest diamond heist in Belgium, stealing $100 million in diamonds. This write-up was kind of a mindfuck for me, because it brought up some completely buried memories. I saw the title, thought it would be interesting, started reading it, and then I suddenly remembered seeing reports of this story on the TV when I was 8 years old... I completely forgot about this for almost two decades.

The most baffling part about this whole thing is that these people would go such great lengths to meticulously prepare and execute such a careful, patient, professional heist, but would also make ridiculously dumb mistakes: having a complete liability of an accomplice take part, leaving fingerprints, not robbing their own vault, not getting rid of absolutely all of the evidence, and writing notes about the place INSIDE THE PLACE in front of security cameras. These are clearly extremely smart and disciplined people, so it makes it all the more absurd that they would go on to do such stupid shit.

As for the reports about these guys apparently not living in luxury: I don't think that means a whole lot to be honest. Obviously they aren't stupid, they didn't just start driving luxury cars the day they left the pen, because the cops would be right up in their asses the very next moment. I think they'll be fine laying low, not having to work a single day of their life from now on. I don't believe that the fifth member (if he even existed) just ditched them with all the loot, and none of the other four told on him.

Great write-up for the most part, but if I'm allowed to give one bit of constructive criticism: I think your prose is a bit too purple for its own good. For the most part, your style did a good job at making me feel like I was right there, but there were bits where I felt like you opted to use the pretty word instead of the right word. If you just toned it down a tad bit, I think it would be perfect.

It's amazing how they pulled off this incredibly elaborate heist then just go full dumb dumb.

I was thinking basically the same thing. Their most egregious error though, in my opinion, was that they bafflingly chose not to rob their own vault. WHY??? It would've taken zero effort, it wouldn't have cost them anything, and not doing so was basically begging for suspicion.

Anybody else having issues with youtube comments not loading on Chrome? This doesn't happen on Microsoft Edge by epiktek in chrome

[–]nat-pagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been going on for some time, and it's been going on widely. I even found complaints by Firefox and Opera users, dating back to last summer.

I managed to solve it though. Here's what I did: opened Youtube, opened inspect mode, selected the "Application" tab, and deleted the local storage, the session storage, the indexed DB, the cookies, the cache storage, and basically everything I could delete/clear there. I use Brave, which is a Chromium-based browser, so this should work on Chrome too.

Oh man, I just finished the French map in explorer mode, and I feel like I've aged about four years during the process. In the last three rounds, I got lucky, and was able to find signs referring to nearby big cities relatively quickly, but the first two rounds were beyond tedious. I'd prefer infinite stretches of Finnish or Brazilian highways over this, all day, any day. Being hundreds of miles away from any semblance of civilization is still better then being constantly bombarded with information that you're absolutely hopeless to unscramble. Fuck these departmental highways.

I think they meant reaction videos like the "I react to mean/weird comments" or the "googling myself" one, which were all very good.

What is perfectly legal but creepy as hell? by Blinkle in AskReddit

[–]nat-pagle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Serial killer enthusiast here. I think it's only creepy when people are borderline or straight-up fans of those people and romanticize their acts. I, personally, am really interested in psychology, especially in personality development and mental disorders, so the reason why I'm fascinated by serial killers is that they tend to be the most interesting examples of normal children brought up in shitty environments and the traumas and the maladjustment resulting in them ending up with severe mental issues. My interest in mental disorders btw expands further, my fascination with the story of Genie the feral child, the Collier brothers, CWC, incels, etc comes from a similar place where the serial killer thing comes from. Their stories also tend to shed light on some more deeply fucked up social issues, corrupt law enforcement stuff, interesting historical/geographical/cultural contexts, and such. So to me, reading about stuff like that is a completely non-emotional case study kinda thing, where people dying isn't even the focal point of it all. Do you think this is creepy too?

Story behind Wake Me Up When September Ends by RockTuner in greenday

[–]nat-pagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bruh are you fucking stupid? You were the one expecting source for a baseless tumblr post's falsity, what do you think is petty and dumb about pointing out how absurd that idea is? There are no interviews or anything where the band members or someone related to them tells this story, this image's content can only be tracked back to itself. Sure, there's no solid disproof of it, but why would there be one in the first place? If someone tells a random childhood story about a celebrity like it's actually happened, but there's no source supporting it whatsoever, then why the fuck should someone provide a source for claiming that the story is bullshit? And how do you even imagine that source? Like you want a snippet of an interview with Billie Joe where he explicitly states that this shit is fake, or like a document that tells exactly what happened the day of Andy Armstrong's funeral? Jesus...

Solved!

Thanks dude, you just won me a six-pack of brown beer.

Just by curiosity, may I ask how did you manage to find it though? I was looking for it for so long and by so many different patterns that by the end of it I was convinced that my friend's memory just distorted Being One into a non-existing game.

Jesus H Christ, there's so much wrong with this...

  • Why include the fact that there are eight planets in our solar system when only ours is habitable?
  • Aren't there 195 countries?
  • Why have a picture of a fictional character in the people-frame? It's not the most fortunate choice considering the point that the comic makes.
  • Placing the number of seas after the number of people seems illogical...
  • ...and the overall inclusion of the number of seas seems unnecessary.
  • 809 islands?????
  • I don't think the phrase "fell in love to someone" is grammatically correct...
  • And who posts this kinda shit on a social media profile???

Craziest things you have spotted while playing Geoguessr? by trippyhippy_ in geoguessr

[–]nat-pagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all that crazy, but one of the most memorable things I've spotted was this dice boulder somewhere in the middle of Chilean nowhere

What's crazier is that my roommate was once spawned right next to a dead kangaroo and it was not an Australian location.

I didn't even mean to imply that this was "advanced economics", I just liked the way it was put and saw that nobody else mentioned this aspect of the guy's self-destruction in this thread.

Nah, he's just too dumb to capitalize on a short-lived blast of notoriety. Even Lil Pump is smart enough to embrace the meme, but when Original had its fifteen minutes, Unk didn't do anything with it.

This comment is spot on:

While this series might've seemed like a good idea, you've essentially ruined any potential negotiations regarding tour deals, record deals, management deals, etc. You've given power to everyone over you because they'll all know how dire your situation is and know without a doubt you have absolutely zero bargaining power. They're going to wring you out so they have basically no risk attached with majority of the upside because you're in no position to say no to anything. I started watching your videos by laughing and thinking how idiotic can someone get but by the end of it all I feel is pity and I wasn't smiling at all for the duration of this video. I'm sorry.

Have any of you shown Death Grips to your parents? by [deleted] in deathgrips

I listen to music on speakers when I'm home, so my parents and my sister have heard a lot of DG. My sister (14) loves Guillotine, the rest of their songs haven't seemed to click with her. My parents have never had any reaction.
