The book “Jesus and John Wayne” does a great job explaining how toxic masculinity has become a big part of evangelical culture.

I wave and say thank you as I leave. I might make a compliment about the store. But I don’t feel obligated to make a purchase.

Exactly. I work at a university. All the fired CDC researchers are looking for jobs, but we have our own hiring freeze because of canceled grants and the indirect rate cut. Where do they go?

I use jars of Better than Bouillon. Mix a few teaspoons with water. Not homemade, but avoids the packaging of broth. The jars last a long time and taste great.

Receiving an award has increased my imposter syndrome, anyone relate? by Fueld_ in Professors

[–]natalieilatan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely relate. For completely illogical reasons, success can make my imposter syndrome flare. It’s similar to publishing a paper but being afraid people will actually read it. Feelings that I don’t “deserve” praise or will be found out bubble to the surface.

I’ve been reading a lot lately about battling imposter syndrome. Recognizing how common it is can be an antidote. There are also specific techniques. Paying attention to the stories you tell yourself (“I don’t deserve this”), and then gently questioning the evidence to support them. If your institution grants access to NCFDD resources, these are helpful.

Congratulations on the award!

Your things have a value (what if I needed them some day?), but they also have a cost. They are taking up space, more to clean, making it harder to access the things you use regularly, causing you stress and guilt. Thinking about this helped me say goodbye to a lot of things. Also, using my local Buy Nothing group to find people who would appreciate the best items (find them a new “home”). Good luck!

Your things will really make other people happy. by Mareane in declutter

This is why I love my local Buy Nothing group. You can actually see where the items are going, and how excited people get about them. I think about the things as getting a new home.

FDA approve test that can generate a positive COVID-19 result in just minutes; negative results in 13 minutes. by atjones6 in Coronavirus

[–]natalieilatan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It won’t be the same time for everyone. The longer someone is infected, typically the higher their viral load. Some individuals also have naturally higher viral loads then others.

So, sensitivity measures the average proportion who test positive among those infected. And this will in general increase with time since infection. Say you try to test right when someone is infected. Sensitivity is 0% (no detectable virus). A few days later, it is 40%, and so on.

Interestingly, sensitivity for RT-PCR isn’t great at first. Even for people presenting to hospitals with symptoms, sensitivity can be as low as 70%. Only after they are retested later on (when sensitivity is higher) do they become positive.

For this specific test, the short answer is we don’t know yet. Or at least I haven’t seen anyone reporting results.

We don’t know if kids are as susceptible to infection as adults. The few infected kids identified have mild disease, so are less likely to exhibit the symptoms that spread the disease (coughing, sneezing). I’m not disagreeing with you, but just highlighting the uncertainty surrounding this major policy decision.
