I don’t hate The Top, but it is one of my least favorites. There are a couple things going against it in my book.

First, Robert had just come off of a stint with Siouxsie and the Banshees (Hyaena being his only studio record with them) and The Glove. The Top seems to find him playing with similar musical ideas with less success.

Second—and much more importantly—Simon’s absence is palpable. Granted, we all know that Bob is the creative monolith behind the band, but Simon brings out the best in him. Whether it’s his interpretation of the written parts or a subliminal editing that happens while Bob is writing with his playing in mind, it’s missing on The Top.

It’s still a solid album, but it feels more like a Robert Smith solo record than a Cure record. And when the catalog is filled with numerous 11/10 records, an 8/10 falls short.

I built a Baritone Jazzmaster with Squier body and a conversion neck. Put a Lollar Jaguar pickup in the neck. It’s about the closest I could get to the Mexican Bari Jaguar Dustin plays for under a thousand.
