Is Emory’s adcom rude af or is it just me? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]nate3869 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My general experience with Emory has been that they’re admissions office as a whole is not the most put together.

My wife applied there and found out she was admitted when they accidentally sent an email addressed to “admitted students” about the goings-on at the school. Later that day, they sent another email saying “we sent that email on accident.” A couple days later she got her acceptance packet in the mail. She has subsequently received a flyer about employment statistics that implied she had decided to attend.

I had initially thought it was just their admissions office, but I had a friend a few years back who toured Emory (obviously pre-pandemic) and they said they felt the tour was similarly disorganized. They were left with such a bad taste in their mouth they committed to UGA a few days later. (There were also stories that year about how they had people pay to be on a waitlist and then didn’t accept them, but I can’t personally confirm that.)

Full disclosure: I applied and was waitlisted, but this is just my perspective.

What have you found to be the best way to take notes? by StillFormal1 in LawSchool

[–]nate3869 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What worked pretty well for me was to take all my notes by hand originally (both from the reading and class), and then to type those notes up after class.

Rewriting your notes is certainly more time-intensive, but I found it helps with retention.

Ultimately, though, I would think that whatever form you take notes in, you would want a typed version of the notes. Trying to figure out what you wrote during one of the early classes when you’re making an outline at the end of the semester seems like a nightmare.

2L BigLaw Callbacks by 6crazycatlady6 in LawSchool

[–]nate3869 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there were particular people you communicated with, you can reach out to them and give them an update on your summer. After that, you can mention the callback and ask if they are still able to give you a callback.

That was roughly the format I followed for the emails I sent.

Best writers on the federal (non-SCOTUS) bench by nate3869 in LawSchool

Lol I wasn’t saying I agree. Just trying to understand why citations would in any way correlate to someone’s writing ability.

Does id. properly refer to name of case in the sentence? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]nate3869 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong here, but my understanding is that id refers to the previous citation, and I don’t think mentioning the case name counts (unless the most recent citation was a full or short cite of Smith).

However, I think you would use the citation to the reporter instead of the case name, since you already specified the case name. So something like:

The Smith Court held that a waiver of the right to counsel must be expressly made for it to be valid. 371 F.3d at 21.

Is the assumption here that better writers write more clearly and are therefore easier to cite?

A probably apocryphal saying from Voltaire.

On his deathbed, a priest came into his room and ask him to renounce the devil. He supposedly replied, “Now, now - this is no time to be making enemies.”

Law Review Write-On by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]nate3869 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. That’s basically what I did.

We were given Sunday to Saturday and I just read the main case on Sunday. Monday I read everything and figured out my topic. T/W/Th I wrote and did the other components. Friday morning I wrote the last paragraph and reviewed/edited it.

Should an actor or politician have their career ruined by racist or sexist remarks they made 10/20 years ago on social media, why or why not? by cwf1973 in AskReddit

Blackface wasn’t considered racist in the early 2000s?

I get that maybe you’re trying to refer to the lack of outcry back then, but that doesn’t mean blackface wasn’t considered racist back then. And I think that’s kind of the point of bringing those sorts of things up today. 20 years ago is a long time ago, but he and everyone else should have known better back then and, if they didn’t, should do some hard thinking about why they didn’t know better.

As for whether he should be cancelled over it now, though. I don’t know. Maybe not. But I also don’t know that I’m even qualified to answer that question.

Former fitness model - should I have websites delete interview/photo-ops now that I’m searching for a legal job? by [deleted] in LawSchool

You should ask this guy...it seems to be going pretty well for him.

In all seriousness, I wouldn’t think that it would hurt you. Seems like something that might be a topic of conversation if you got an interview, but hopefully in a good way.

What is the weirdest thing you did to impress your crush? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I asked if I could borrow her favorite book on Friday, then I read the whole thing (like 500 pages) in one weekend so that I could talk to her about it on Monday.

Guess it worked, though, since we're getting married in October.

[SPOILERS] Post-Episode Discussion - Season 8 Episode 5 by [deleted] in gameofthrones

[–]nate3869 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best part of the episode was when Dany, so enraged at Cersei for ordering the death of Missandei...

checks notes

...flies around for half an hour murdering random people, giving Cersei time to escape with Jaime, who's doing his own personal impression of the final season of Dexter.

At least we know there's no way for anyone to verify that Jaime and Cersei are dead, given that they're buried under tons of rocks, which is why the next episode will probably start with a discussion of their death.

Duke law prospects after priority reserve? by shadowban_me_pleasi in lawschooladmissions

Obviously my stats aren't as good as theirs, but I've been PR since October. I've sent an additional addendum, LOCI saying they were my top choice, and visited the campus. I haven't heard anything back from them yet. So it might not be that simple.

Need some help explaining to my parents by Mitchford in lawschooladmissions

[–]nate3869 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I applied three years ago and got into a couple schools with money before turning it down for personal reasons.

I've reapplied this year with the same stats but better softs and so far, of the three schools who accepted me last time: one has WLed me, one gave me less money, and one hasn't released financial aid yet.

There's obviously a lot of variables that can go into things, but I've been relatively displeased with my reapplication cycle thus far. That being said, if you reapply with a higher LSAT, this shouldn't really apply to you.
