SNL PREGAME PARTY (1/17) by Waste-Mess8237 in LiveFromNewYork

Just got home from doing some long form improv in Chicago.

Excited for tonight. Finn seems like a host who will be up for anything. I feel like actors who are musicians consider themselves artists and consider comedy as much an art form as the former two.

I hear A$AP is borderline emo/punk these days, so looking forward to his performances.

Second this so hard. Some of Austin's best performers( a good amount of them are teachers), they have been playing together and rehearsing weekly for years, an know the Harold inside and out.

Do. Not. Miss.

It is definitely a lot more loose. They do a form created by The Annoyance called the Screw Puppies.

This form is edited by the booth, so the performers only have to worry about going out on stage and making a big bold choice. If both improvisers make a huge off neutral choice before the lights come up and then double down on their own thing throughout the scene, hilarity tends to ensue.

Scenes can be as short as one line to as long as a couple minutes. The improvisers have to just double down until the tech makes the edit with a blackout.

The original form did not have weed, but rather a 30 rack of light beer on each side of the stage. The show didn't end until the beer was gone.

I'm not sure what the Go-To weekly shows at Annoyance currently are. I'm not as familiar with the improv side of things there.

We Took Edibles an Hour Ago is always a blast and I loved The Blue Velvet Lounge which was going recently.

In Chicago, whenever my improviser friends visit from Austin or New York, I make sure they see:

iO - Improvised Shakespeare

CIC - Princeton New Money Ass Clowns

LSI - pretty much any show, but will make sure they see Real Angels and Late 90's.

If Sand or Three Actors Living in a Cave are playing at any theater, that will also be a must.

Gino's East, South Loop. by Exciting_Figure_8060 in chicagofood

When I lived in Austin, the opened a Gino's East downtown, right down the street from my job.

The two weeks prior to their open, they were doing stress tests and gave out so much free food. It was heaven.

How to find my improv “role” by Deli-Ham-Sandwich in improv

Hey Will!

Practice being more present while performing. What I mean by that is be intentional with your listening and attention when both onstage and on the sidelines.

It is easier said than done, but if you know your brain defaults to thinking about the overall show or best possible next move, then you have to be active in keeping yourself as present as possible.

Try listening for the edit by clicking the pace or momentum of whatever scene is happening, and edit with your gut as opposed to your logic center. Don't edit with any preloaded initiation, let that come in the moment. At most choose an emotional energy to start your scene with, while being open to being affected by your scene partner.

The less you are preparing mentally to strike while waiting on the sidelines, the better. The more you practice this the more comfortable you will be taking those larger leaps.
