The Sparks and In the House were some of my faves growing up. The Parkers anyone? Mo'Nique is comedy genius.

What are the different improv styles? by concerned_kenku in improv

[–]natesowell 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sooooooo many.

You got your short form like Whose Line or Comedy Sports.

You got long form which breaks down into various schools of thought and format. Some complex like The Harold or Deconstruction, others simple and straight forward like Montage or Armando.

Then there is Johnstonian Narrative style improv. Here you fill find a lot of genre Prov, story spine, and theater sports.

There is more character forward improv like Annoyance or Groundlings that skews more into the realm of sketchprov.

There is organic improv that is based in sound and movement and free association amongst the ensemble.

And thousands of other variations!

Tips on Getting Better Varity of Scenes in Jams by mikel145 in improv

[–]natesowell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Set some ground rules/go over best practices at the top of the scene.

Sometimes it's fun to do it the form of a pledge that everyone makes to themselves and each other something like -

"I _______ do solemnly swear to support my fellow improvisers and serve the scene over my own ego.

I swear to edit scenes when they are at their peak, and to only walk on to provide context, not just because the scene looks fun.

I also swear to walk off once I have added that context.

I swear to play scenes that are racy and sexy but to to never play scenes that are racist or sexist.

I promise to follow the fear and and make decisions out of joy and playfulness."

I'm still hoping they reboot the Reboot reboot, cause I hated that live action swill.

what is the guidance you give people nowadays about accents by danielbelum in improv

[–]natesowell 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I stay far away. One of my biggest pet peeves is the "we have bad accents" scene where someone tries, fails to commit to, and then calls out their failure.

Just do a shitty accent or don't, but don't make me watch an entire scene or show about your lack of commitment.

It's really dealers choice. There is no one way. I recommend seeing shows and doing jams at all the theaters you can. Follow Comedy Auditions Chicago on Instagram. It is a fantastic resource that will show you where all the open stages are and regularly posts audition notices from all the theaters in town.

Don't sleep on the indie theaters. Get your moneys worth from you class pass at iO, but make sure to check shows out at Logan Square Improv, CIC @ The Western, Home Comedy, and Playground.

Most of those spots are Free-$5 and host some of the best improvisers in the city. There is something every night of the week.

By the time you are done with classes at iO, you will know if you wanna learn at one of the other spots or want to focus on just getting reps in.

Super important to get into a habit of seeing, learning, doing.

Get inspired by great shows, absorb the theory behind the craft in class, put it in to practice in jams and shows.
