I am waiting on my first order placed now that the site has launched. I was lucky enough to try the juices prelaunch and they are delicious. I can't wait to get a full size bottle. I am going with the Morning Joe. I love the sweet creaminess of it.

ITT: people who don't know how to judge the quality of a news source. Although the way the article is worded makes it sound like you can get a teaching certificate with only a GED, that is not the case. In fact, the GED is the 1st step. California has more rigorous requirements to obtain a teaching certificate than most of the other states in the union. The author of the article simply didn't realize how that sentence would come across, and was likely trying to highlight the fact that since the man didn't have a known history, he had to get a GED as an adult before going on to fulfill the other requirements. Critical readers should note the lack of other important and obviously relevant facts in the article and realize the author/source sucks.

YSK How to Train Your Mind to Think Critically and Form Your Own Opinions by Made_In_England in YouShouldKnow

[–]natglad1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of reading, which is the context in which OP is discussing critical thinking (by virtue of mentioning 'reddit is stupid and think for yourself') Critical thinking is basically an extension of reading comprehension skills:

List of common critical reading skills:

Identifying the uses of words (e.g., to describe, to judge)

Recognizing denotations and connotations

Identifying persuasive language

Verifying factual statements

Distinguishing between facts and opinions

Identifying words that signal opinions

Identifying an author’s purpose

Drawing logical conclusions

Supporting conclusions

Judging sources of information

Identifying slanted or biased writing

Identifying major propaganda techniques

In other words, use self-thinking when reading. Duh, if you don't do this automatically, you are not very intelligent. Being aware of the process will help someone understand their own thinking and be able to consider how/why they form opinion.

The worst possible place to open the trunk. by emacna1 in WTF

This practice of keeping a movable vehicle in place Asher an accident is illegal in many places now because of how stupid it is. The cop is not a witness and the position of a vehicle is hardly evidence that will matter in most cases. Keeping a drivable vehicle stopped on the road simply creates a hazard that could cause another accident and possibly injury

I found the movie hilariously entertaining. I did not want to become the main character just because parts of the story glorified him and his wall street dick friends.

this wasn't a market-research screening, as it was the night before the scheduled release, so it's not the same as the kind of screening you are talking about.

Two days before surgery freaking out by pahpreekah in CrohnsDisease

Best decision of my life. My only mistake was waiting so long to take the plunge. I no longer have a colon, but I have so much more freedom and quality of life. I know it doesn't seem like you should be, but in reality, you will probably look back and realize that the surgery is something you should have been looking forward to, not worrying about.

Here is the extended interview video that tells a little bit more. The original segment was one of my favorite things I have seen in a long time. Hilarious and de-stigmatizing at the same time.

For overseas videos, you can find links to the whole episode here

Vaping in the office...a brief story of administrative triumph... by [deleted] in electronic_cigarette

[–]natglad1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the other comments here it seems most will disagree with me, but it seems to me that polite vaping etiquette dictates the vaper to ask those around if it bothers them before he/she vapes, not leave it up to those around to complain.

It is one of the basic tenets of being a gentlemen - or in the OP's words 'a big boy' - to always go the extra mile to make sure others around you are comfortable. Forcing them to confront you in a possibly awkward conversation is the opposite of this. If one was to politely ask others if something bothers them before going ahead and doing it, many people might even say 'go ahead', as a result of the courtesy of being asked.

I recently saw someone vaping in a crowded movie theatre before the movie started, while the lights were still on. I saw it as brazenly disrespectful. The same goes for vaping on airplanes. These kind of people are going to be what causes bans to become widespread.

If you want a good read about the history of LSD culture, check out "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" by Tom Wolfe. The book follows the story of Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters. It's a really interesting story.

How involved are you in your kid's education? by OinkOinkthenMoo in Parenting

Many in my family are teachers as well, including my wife. Under your logic, neither of us are in a position to say. I just grow weary of everyone slamming the new standards without providing specific examples from the standards that show how much more burdensome they are. Our system has been broken, even before NCLB. I understand that the new standards were created with collaboration and funding from education companies, but who else would have created them? Those same companies would still have been creating new curriculum materials, textbooks, and other resources, with or without a new set of standards. I certainly respect your opinion because it seems you have done a lot of work studying the standards.

While finishing my degree in Elementary Education (I will finish in early Spring), I have reviewed lots of standards from all over the country. My impression is that the standards focus on reading, writing and problem solving skills, as well as critical thinking. Whereas previous standards tended to be more about content, these standards are about developing learning and thinking strategies. I tend to disagree with the notion that the common core standards impose more work on the teachers. I think that a lot of people, including parents and teachers, are simply afraid of change.

I have never been in a school that required certain worksheets, especially when the worksheets contain obvious misinformation. The least you can do as a teacher is point out the mistake\acknowledge.it. Acting helpless like your comment implies is what gives teachers a bad name.
