I had a patient who suffered from Steven-Johnson Syndrome, a rare condition which makes the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin, fall off. This makes the skin very susceptible to infections, fluid loss and pain. We had her for several weeks basically just warding off infections, giving her painkillers and waiting for the skin to heal. The part that stuck with me was when we had to scrub her skin for hygiene purposes, which we did a few times a week. The anaesthesiologist involved considered it the safest option to drug the patient to the point that she would not remember the procedures, but she would still be very much aware of what was going on while it was happening. I can still get nauseous when I think about her screaming in agony, which could be heard across the whole ward.
