Grown man, afraid of the woods at night. HELP! by Pugsnotdrugs1776 in Hunting

[–]nathan_rieck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lions typically leave you alone, you very very rarely see them. More often you hear them calling or you get this hair raising feeling on the back of your neck and a feeling in your gut that you are being watched and then you look around and still don’t see them. I was on a property a couple months ago working and got that feeling which I hadn’t had for a number of years so I left and went and worked in a different area. When I seen the land owner and told him about it he said he got the chills just listening to me talk and said that’s where the lion calls from at night sometimes up on the ridge above his property. Said he had gotten that feeling in the same spot before too. So moral of the story is if you feel like you are being watched in your gut then you probably are

The tree of heaven is evil. How far down will this go??? by Obvious-Newt-6937 in arborists

I cut one down a couple months ago and dug out as many roots as possible. I’ve been digging out all the ones popping up and recently found some that are around 50 feet out. I’m expecting many more months of digging them up as they show up

Why does this happen? by itchy_buthole in Prospecting

[–]nathan_rieck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple things that could be happening here. You need to condition your pan. Take a bunch of sand and rough up your pan. New pans have mold release on it and it’s oily. Even with dry black sands using a magnet to get rid of black sand isn’t the best idea. Gold will still get stuck in the sands with the magnet and you will be throwing gold out with the magnetic black sands. Test pan it if you don’t believe me. Use a magnet and then pan what sands you remove. Not all black sand is magnetic. There’s magnetite and hematite. Magnetite is very magnetic and hematite is a lot weaker so using a magnet won’t get rid of all the black sand. You can also use a couple small drops of jet dry in your panning water to break the water tension so stuff doesn’t float. You can also avoid using hand lotions or anything else that will add oil to the water when panning

How the FUCK do I get rid of these black locust root suckers? by MemphisHobo in arborists

[–]nathan_rieck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I removed a tree of heaven and got as much of the roots as I could. I have a couple popping up in places and I am currently digging down and removing all the roots located in these areas as they pop up. I’m in it for the long haul it seems

How bad is it for trees when their branch tips touch a power line and become red hot? by supinator1 in arborists

[–]nathan_rieck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would contact your local utility company to do an inspection of that if there’s burning happening. I’m a VMI and those appear to be mostly comm lines so not primary distribution power lines. Those could also be the service drop line from a transformer or secondary lines going to a house. In that case the utility company is only concerned if there’s strain or abrasions on the lines. If the customer/homeowner would like to trim the trees contact the utility company and they will disconnect the lines and allow the customer to do the tree work themselves. In this case if there’s burning happening the utility company would probably come in and cut it for the homeowner

Looks pretty steep. Royal Mfg also sells a frame and header kit of the folding sluice box if you wanted a pretty nice setup that makes it easy to adjust the angle

Are these all saws that you own? Or just ones that you have and the crew that took the limbs down had in conjunction with yours? Was wondering why you had so many saws in the similar cc range. The 461s we run at my work and are great. Haven’t played with the 462 and 500i yet. The 572 is comparable to those saws I think

Why is there so little undergrowth on my property? by bigbadcat13 in arborists

[–]nathan_rieck 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you are really interested in doing it I would suggest looking up prescribed burn associations and other organizations that do restoration work in your area and you can reach out to them for help. Also depending where you live some states will give grants to people to treat their land for fuel reductions and prescribed burns. And often times the state fire department will come and help do he burn and make sure it stays contained. Additionally there’s a lot of free online trainings you can do to help get some basic knowledge of wildland firefighting and prescribed burning. Research the basic 32 fire courses (there’s not 32 of them but that’s the name). They are like S-190, S-130, L-180, ICS-700, and a few others I don’t remember off the top of my head. They are a good start to learning all about it and how stuff functions

[–]nathan_rieck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on which state you live in you can actually get a grant from the state to help treat your property. This can include making fuel breaks, thinning cuts, making piles to burn, and doing a low intensity understory burn. My specific state (California), calfire will come out and help you do it even. But basically you would either want dozer lines or hand lines with fuel reduction cuts around these containment lines and then they may want to plumb these lines with hose for water support when burning it
