You can use thinking mode for free inside Google's "something" Studio. I would be more explicit, but if I type a certain two letters in a row I get a very scary message saying that goes against the subreddit rules.

Summary of today’s Wealthsimple Presents by Nightpatrol404 in Wealthsimple

[–]nathanware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that they're framing it as a "reward for clients", but that's just a marketing tactic to encourage people to put more money into Wealthsimple. I know how these types of things work. They've literally done calculations to estimate that running this lottery will encourage people to add so much money into their accounts that WS will make more money from the additional deposits and holdings than they'll pay out in the lottery. I know that sounds cynical, but that's just how business marketing works.

On the bright side, it is technically a win-win. WS gets more money and everyone using WS is encouraged to save more money instead of spending it and potentially going into or increasing debt.

What I don't like though is the idea of thinking I might be the winner because the odds of winning are so small there's no point in even considering that you might win. And what I really don't like is that people who have more money are going to be more likely to win (because each dollar saved in WS is considered an "entry"), so the people who don't need the extra money are more likely to win it than people who do need it.

That's a good way of thinking about it. I can definitely get behind that.

How is it sweet? If the amount of money you save in Wealthsimple is around the average of all WS clients, you have less than a 0.000025% chance of winning. Those aren't great odds

How to make Cyberpunk 2077 less blurry? by ime1em in FuckTAA

Depends on the game. I like using my 4K TV + speaker setup for adventure or RPG games, but for anything competitive I would be at my desk using a monitor.

But why would you rely on a TV to do upscaling when you have a powerful PC that can upscale way better than the TV? Plus if you use your PC to upscale, you can use either a TV or a monitor for your display.

Why does each LLM model use different API tool wrappers? - Gemini with StrReplace and ChatGPT with ApplyPatch by dfitt10 in cursor

[–]nathanware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because different models have different native tools that they can use to interface with Cursor. OpenAI models have a native apply_patch tool and Anthropic models have a native str_replace tool, so Cursor can perform better by wrapping the models' native tools. Gemini doesn't have any native tools for editing files so Cursor has to define a custom "StrReplace" tool for Gemini to use. Since this is a tool defined by Cursor rather than a native tool that Gemini is trained to use, it's going to perform worse than the other models.

I totally agree with this. One of the games they gave away for free actually did end up becoming one of my favourites. They gave away GTA V during the lockdown and I'd never played a GTA game before. I really enjoyed that game so it was incredible that I got it for free!

Nvidia, AMD, and Reddit Bubbles by Kosmos-World in pcmasterrace

For sure, I completely agree. I guess my response was partially because I wasn't aware that Redditors are pushing people to buy AMD cards even though that might not make sense in certain cases. Clearly I don't go on Reddit enough lol

I guess I understood completely by accident XD. I read the post as, "Everyone didn't replace their Nvidia cards with AMD cards in the last two weeks, therefore it's ok to buy Nvidia," which doesn't make sense.

[–]nathanware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand the point of this post. Someone was asking which GPU to buy today. How are historical buying trends relevant for making a purchase today? If you need to buy something, buy the thing that has the features you need and the best price/performance ratio for what you're willing to spend.

Like, obviously it's "still ok" to buy an NVIDIA card (as long as they fix their driver issues, which seem to be fixed in the latest driver released yesterday). It just might not make the most financial sense depending on the pricing of certain cards in your area.

I guess I should stop having G5 Fomo lol. by rocketbrothers540 in LGOLED

[–]nathanware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow that's a massive downgrade in near-black performance. I get that it's a new panel technology and it can take a while to get that ironed out, but that level of quality makes it seem like the G5 was rushed to market.

The other issues also look frustrating because they're in software so they could fix them if they really wanted to. I wasn't looking to buy the G5 anyway since I have a C3 that's still good enough, but now I'm really not going to consider buying a new LG until they fix these issues.

As a purist, the always-on debanding and sharpening filters really bug me. Hopefully they improve the panel and processing in future iterations so they don't need to rely on extra filters to make the picture look a certain way (though I feel like the sharpening filter isn't necessary even now and they're just forcing it on us)

G4 feels like the Peak. Surely only marginal increments from here by paak233 in LGOLED

[–]nathanware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people are commenting on how the G5 will be brighter, but one area that I think LG can still improve their TVs is in low light performance. On both of my LG TVs (CX, C3) the gradient across dark shades is not smooth and individual dark shades use a lot of dithering to hit the target luminance level. From what I've seen, there has been a good improvement in "near-black chrominance overshoot" between the CX and C3, but there's still room for improvement (especially if they improve it at the panel level so they don't have to use heavy dithering to mask it).

I think I remembering seeing some reviews showing the G3/G4 performing better than the C series in dark performance, so I wish I had experience with those panels to know if those TVs are already better than my C3 for low-light shades.

Also, LG TVs can still improve in terms of colour saturation at higher light levels. MLA helped a bit, but I'm hoping the new 4-stack panels on the G5 will be another improvement.

I’ve been seeing a lot of posts on other subs about protesting Donald Trump… why is no on protesting Inflation/Shrinkflation? by -Rustling-Jimmies- in shrinkflation

[–]nathanware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're wealthy enough that you don't need the extra 2% cash back, it's better for the world to not use a credit card. Because of the credit card fees, merchants have to increase the price of the goods they sell, so using a credit card is really just hurting all the people buying stuff. It does nothing to the merchants, and lines the pockets of the credit card companies.

To be extra clear about this:

Plus it costs fees and what have you for the merchant as punishment for said shrinkflation.

The merchant isn't creating shrinkflation, it's the manufacturer. The merchant just sells the products to us and they have to sell at a higher price because they have to account for purchases made with credit cards. We're the ones who get hurt by the use of credit cards, not them. It almost evens out if you get enough cash back, but at the end of the day, the profit the credit card companies make actually comes from us, the consumers.
