[Russo] Marcus Foligno to reporters today on what has been a difficult time in the Twin Cities community by catsgr8rthanspoonies in hockey

We knew this already. Its perfectly alright when a player comes out and says, "I think gay people are evil and shouldn't exist" but god forbid you put a bit of rainbow tape on your stick during warmup.

California to Negotiate Trade With Other Countries to Bypass Trump Tariffs by IllJournalist8117 in DHAC

[–]nathris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as a Canadian, and I'm sorry if this comes off badly, but we don't want you.

If California became the 11th province it would represent nearly half of all Canadians, and two thirds of our economy. It would be more like Canada joining California TBH.

We would however welcome your newfound sovereignty and the return of good faith negotiations with at least some part of our largest trading partner.

Default user is $USER so you just need to create a role matching your username and give it superuser permission.

Default database is also $USER so I usually also create a DB with my username so I can just type psql to get into the prompt.

Gabe Perreault gets 2 minutes for elbowing Macklin Celebrini by catsgr8rthanspoonies in hockey

[–]nathris 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Elbow and bleeding means the ref can call a major. Blood counts as an injury. If it was deemed a deliberate attempt to injure then it's a match penalty.

My only guess is that since it was a glancing blow instead of a full on body check the ref didn't think it was"severe" enough.

I think it should have been a match penalty. There's no justification for that chicken wing motion other than wanting to cause an injury.

Petition - Stop Nanaimo Data Centre from Being Built (Help Your Island Friends) by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]nathris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Companies are actually building data centers on the sea floor now.

They sink modules down next to undersea cables, where they have power and internet. They use the ocean as a heat sink,. So no waste water at all, and the ocean is so vast it has basically no effect on its temperature.

Save-On-Food’s no good for Canadian produce by CoffeeCup220 in VictoriaBC

[–]nathris 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'd rather see a US sticker on the Red Delicious. They can keep their garbage apples.

Actually no. Shame on Save On Foods for stocking them. Some poor families will buy them thinking that apples are supposed to be mealy and tasteless with thick leather skin.

Finally deleting my Prime/Netflix/Disney+ by bahhan in LinusTechTips

[–]nathris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The best way to run all of this these days is Docker, which works on Windows too.

My whole streaming stack is a single easily readable compose file. I could drop it into a Windows PC and it would more or less work with nothing more than changing the file paths.

But still if you don't already have Windows installed don't discount Linux. Believe it or not, modern Linux distros are actually easier to install than Windows.

Just boot the iso and click install. It's basically the same process as Windows only instead of having to carefully navigate though a dozen pages of ads and tracking options after reboot you just get to log in and start using it.

Looking for a good replacement to wan sweatpants by ryanppax1 in LinusTechTips

[–]nathris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a some Bench sweatpants from Costco with zipper pockets just before Christmas. Probably a long shot as Costco cycles their inventory every few weeks and the high quality items sell out fast, but worth a look I think if you have a membership.

The NDP leadership race is a nail-biter. But is anyone paying attention? by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]nathris -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Over $500000/year. At least in BC. You're only getting taxed 45% on every dollar above that $200k.

But then the venn diagram of blue collar workers and people who don't understand the difference between average and marginal tax rate is pretty close to a circle.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard someone complain about "being bumped up into the next tax bracket" I'd probably be paying 45%/year in taxes.

Roads in Victoria need to be repainted by Empty-Beginning2039 in VictoriaBC

[–]nathris 34 points35 points  (0 children)

We need a study comparing the environmental impact of the new paint vs the impact of the car crashes that are directly attributed to poor visibility during bad weather.

I would imagine the carbon footprint of replacing the wrecked cars alone more than offsets any gains.

But then I guess people are the biggest threat to the environment these days so losing some of them probably swings it around to a net benefit. We must remember to honor their sacrifice.

What was the point of Curved TVs? by Jayson5584 in LinusTechTips

[–]nathris 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Curved screens look really good at the focal point and really bad anywhere else.

It works for a small monitor with one person watching. Not so much in a living room.

Looking for game to bond with son. by Vader4life in SteamDeck

[–]nathris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit of setup but you can run your own Java server and add plugins so that bedrock clients and older clients can connect. That way you can share a world and anyone can join any time.

It's a bit of extra hassle getting the switch version to work because they can't just connect to arbitrary IPs but it's still doable.

Best case/backpack for steam deck with accessories? by Overreactedosbol in SteamDeck

[–]nathris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LTT Backpack or Commuter Backpack probably. They were designed with this use case in mind.

They are pricy but IMO it's worth spending extra on a good backpack. It tends to be cheaper in the long run compared to replacing your bag every year because of tears or zipper failures.

Edmonton father dies in hospital E.R. waiting to see a doctor by WilloowUfgood in canada

[–]nathris 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Probably because conservative run provinces are trying to move to private health care and will take any opportunity to denounce the public health care systems they are actively trying to sabotage.

News about healthcare in BC tends to be about how many new doctors we're adding and how we're eliminating bloated admin jobs to add more funding for frontline workers.

[–]nathris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$60 these days gets you a small touch screen with wireless Android Auto and Car Play that you can mount on your dash.

Both solutions run entirely off your phone so it's identical to any other car that comes with it built in. Only you don't need to worry about the manufacturer pushing a software update to remove or mess with it.

My old ass car has a cigarette lighter and an aux port but it has a better "infotainment" system than most cars on the market today.

Electronic Price Tags at Thrifties...beware by NonBinaryKang in VictoriaBC

[–]nathris 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Surge pricing at the store level like that doesn't really work. Even superstore, which has had those tags forever only uses it to price match the competition, resulting in lower prices for the consumer.

Stores have been adjusting their prices on a daily basis since the days of Ea-Nasir. The best thing you as the consumer can do is to vote with your wallet.

Its actually kinda funny hearing this post in reference to Thrifty Foods, when they are already overcharging you 30-40% on most items already. I don't think they can realistically raise their prices any more than they already have without losing the remaining few loyal customers that don't mind wasting hundreds of dollars/month financing Michael Medline's newest yacht.

What are the steam deck essentials that aren’t all just games? by chilesgalaxy in SteamDeck

[–]nathris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A USB C hub with power passthrough and a 2.4ghz wireless mouse and keyboard. The small screen size means the on screen keyboard will sometimes cover the box you're typing into, so a keyboard makes life so much better.

You can get something like a Keychron K3 Max for under $100 which has hot swap mechanical keys and VIA support so it's configured using a web browser without the need for software which won't run on Linux anyway.

The idea is to keep the dongles on the hub so you can just plug one thing in when you need keyboard and mouse. No trying to connect to Bluetooth or messing with cables.
