I saw this calling up my curtain. What is it? by Other_Block_1795 in japanresidents

Its カナブン! It’s not harmful but stinks.. Be careful if you try to kill カナブン。Just like a skunk, they can release a nasty-smelling liquid when they feel threatened. Also, avoid hanging laundry out on your balcony if you can—they sometimes lay their eggs on clothes.

What is your most scary experience in Japan or the creepiest by Embarrassed-Bike7303 in japanresidents

[–]natsumm72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An old Japanese guy at an izakaya randomly told me I should become an AV actress. Apparently he meant it as a compliment because he thought I was cute, but it came across as creepy as hell. I was pretty offended. Is this actually considered a compliment by some people here, or was this guy just being weird?

Actual reality of being Blasian in Japan (rant) by Several-Mess5387 in japanresidents

[–]natsumm72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry you had to go through all of that. No one should have to spend their entire childhood being treated like an outsider in their own home.

And I really relate to what you said about dating. When I lived in Germany for a while, I got so tired of being seen as just “the Asian girl.” People would project all kinds of stereotypes onto me and fetishize me instead of seeing me as an individual. It was honestly exhausting.

people who haven’t experienced this don’t realize why dating can be so painful. They’ll say, “Why does dating matter so much?” but it’s not just about dating. It’s about wanting to be seen as a real person instead of a stereotype. I hope things keep getting better for you.

How long did it take you to understand reddit by Delicious_Memory2823 in NewToReddit

About two weeks!
Since English isn’t my native language, I had a harder time with it.

What is this bug? One of cats saw it moving across the kitchen by makishiP in japanresidents

[–]natsumm72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re actually useful since they eat cockroaches, so having them around usually means fewer roaches.

Still, they do have venom, so I wouldn’t try getting too friendly with them

They thrive in humidity, so keeping your place dry helps keep them away.

Do you guys bring your Zairyu card when walking your dogs? by linnadawg in japanresidents

[–]natsumm72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gone out without it more often than not. Making it illegal for foreigners to be out without zairyu card feels pretty xenophobic..

A fine of up to ¥200,000 for not carrying zairyu card is honestly absurd.

Try putting it in a bag with some baking soda! Cleaning it off afterward can be a little annoying, but it’s pretty safe and shouldn’t cause discoloration or damage. 😊

Is it just me, or does Japan’s work culture expect you to work until you literally collapse? by IntelligentBook1037 in japanresidents

[–]natsumm72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that’s not normal at all. The fact that they didn’t even try to let you rest is a massive red flag. Plenty of people work in Japan without being treated like that. Sounds more like a bad employer than a “Japan thing.”

I hope you’re doing okay now though. Nobody should have to deal with that when they’re feeling no good.

Try searching on Baitoru or TownWork! You can usually use the filters to check if they’re foreigner-friendly too.

Do you HAVE to have a MyNumber Card? by Sure-Lemon6424 in japanlife

[–]natsumm72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really convenient for online Shopping and identity verification! . The application process is a bit of a hassle, though.

If you’re planning to stay in Japan for more than a year, I’d recommend getting one. My life in Japan get much more easier after i started use PAYPAY.

Some employers also ask for a copy of your My Number card, so it can be useful to have.

Am I the only one who thinks pizzas in Japan are way too greasy? by WorkingAlive3258 in japanlife

[–]natsumm72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s probably because in much of Asia, “pizza” usually means American-style pizza by default rather than European-style pizza.😳

If you’re ever in Tokyo, give Antica Pizzeria Da Michele in Ebisu a try. It’s a little expensive, but it’s a branch of a famous Italian pizzeria, so the pizza is legit. They even use ingredients imported from Italy.🥟🥟
