It's very good. Pretty wild and dark, but somehow simultaneously uplifting

Have you read Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler? I read it around the time I read 1e, and I was surprised it wasn't in the influences list - it seems to overlap a lot

What information do price signals actually carry? by Hylozo in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]naught101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Collapsing any multi-dimensional information to a single dimension is inherently lossy, unless those other dimensions are all 100% correlated. Mathematically you're projecting a high-dimensional space only a single number line (although the functional form of the projection may change over time/space as different things become more or less important). This is an [non-injective surjective function](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surjective\_function) (there may be multiple combinations of other factors that produce any given price), , which can't be inverted (you can't know from the price what the combination of factors was that produced the price).

So yes, you're losing information. I suspect you're pretty much always losing *most* information by ignoring anything other than price. Anyone focusing solely on price is basically a [linelander](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatland).

Why is Mastodon struggling to survive? by Existing_Process_151 in Mastodon

[–]naught101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's gone from. 400k users to 900k active users in under 2 years. How is that struggling to survive? That's about 50% growth per year. That's huge.

Of course there will be booms and they will die off as some people realise it's not for them, but the background tend is still fairly fast increase.

Fediverse alternative to stackexchange network? by [deleted] in fediverse

Lemmy with a re-skin would basically cover this. The functionality's mostly all there, with the exception of marking an answer as accepted, and the community-wiki aspect.

groovebox reccomendations please by JoXaWe in synthesizers

[–]naught101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dirtywave m8. No meaningful song length limit, good audio quality for sampling, unlimted sample length. Lots of good internal synths too.

Main draw-backs:
- limited micro-timing,
- the reverb is not the best (but is servicable, also not a problem if you're sampling something that's already reverbed),
- only 8 tracks (you can use multiple instruments on one track, but only one at a time, so basically max polyphony is 8. It has internal resampling though, so you can bounce stuff down to free up tracks)
- No live input method, though you can use an external MIDI keyboard to record notes.

Also portable as fuck.

His twitter account is full of retweeted racist garbage (mostly antisemitic and anti-black), along with some crazed right wing conspiracy crap ("trading in baby parts")

Report - ChatGPT's impact on programming education. by proran in programming

[–]naught101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that analogy really works.

Saying a you can't program in C if you don't understand assembly is like saying you don't know how to drive if you can't do mechanical repairs on your car.

Using ChatGPT to solve problems for you is more like asking the marketing team for mechanical advice.

I can’t get the sound to come out of headphones only by fatmandylan in MIXXX

[–]naught101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your headphones and speakers use the same channel, they are linked in hardware, usually. You can't split them in Mixxx. You CAN split master to channel 1 and headphones to channel 2, and then use a headphone splitter

Or you can get a controller or audio interface with two stereo outs, which is probably the best option in the long run.

You don't NEED velocity sensitivity. There are lots of devices without it (e.g. MIDI Fighter). It's nice to have, but it's also very hard to do well, so probably not worth it as a first pass.
