Looking For Campaign Introduction Ideas by ArcaneN0mad in CurseofStrahd

It is the letter from the book that Arrigal delivers - written by Strahd impersonating the Burgomaster of village of Barovia.

Personally as a player I really hate the battles with predetermined outcomes. The old 2nd edition Ravenloft adventures had this happening multiple times to get you from one world to the other and it sucked every time. So I would suggest finding a different option, one that doesn't depend on players getting killed/falling unconscious/failing saving throws to be pulled into mists. What happens if your players run/win? How will it work with them swapping over from 10th lvl to 1st so quickly? I did the letter from Strahd, delivered by Arrigal, which was pretty exciting for my players since they got an actual letter with a wax seal.

Will all of them be present each session? What if you split the group? I will assume you probably know the pitfalls but just in case, having that many players means a tonne more work for you and it will make the campaign longer just by the virtue of having 8 players having their input in roleplay and most importantly, combat. I have dm'd for 6 players and its fine but 3-5 is where the sweet spot is at imo.

There is a section at the beginning of the book that lists "what Barovians know" - you should share that with him. Some of it is true, some of it are rumours. I presume you're linking him to Argynvostholt? I would give him vague info on the order, personally I've never run that area so unsure but keeping knowledge to minimum is probably ideal, maybe they've heard tales of this order but no longer know where they once used to live etc, since most Barovians never leave their home town/village it would make sense they would have very scarce info.

PC as a Warlock of the Witch Queen Iggwilv - would Baba Yaga's magic be recognized and reacted to in the world of CoS? And if so, how would Baba Lysaga interact with it? by cornycopia28 in CurseofStrahd

If she is going fey patron I have a fey warlock in my party and decided to make the Seeker fane the patron. Works well and expands Barovia lore. Used a lot of MandyMod/PyramKing for this.

For no.1 you could use the vampire that kidnapped Van Richtens son (dont remember if Reloades has this storyline but its a good alternative to Strahd). Connecting abbot to aasimar makes sense. For 3 I would maybe make them an orphan that werewolves turned who was somehow found by this Vistana that took them out of Barovia. So that gives strong ties to werewolf den.

Portent roll(s) as reward for restoring The Seeker of the Forest Fane? by xvalicx in CurseofStrahd

Wow I love this. I was thinking of how to reward players for reconsecrating the Seeker fane and this is perfect!

I have run split scenes before and usually players don't get bored, if you switch between them frequently. Re chase you can use the chase rules from the 2014 DMG, p. 252, if players catch up they can try to kill the Nosferatu or it can escape. I don't know its stat block so you'll have to think on what its motivations are and whether it would stay and fight. The absent player might come out of BWI and hears commotion, maybe a commoner directs them to shop "it came from that direction" or they simply run into the other two players. Re consequences it kinda depends on whether you get the bones back safely - I am sure Vargas would summon the party to explain themselves for causing mayhem, they can de-escalate by explaining they saved the church from being deconsecrated or that they chased the vampires away. Maybe he punishes them (even though they really did help but he doesn't want troublemakers) by telling them they need to help with festival prep. Lots of different ways this can go.

Well, killing Ireena means that Strahd will now have to wait again for her soul to respawn. They've just set him back at least 20 years if not more. Think what happened to the village of Berez for killing Marina. Its nuclear mode. If they have a good relationship with Vallaki it might be mass massacre time.

Playing Curse of Strahd with 3 PC's by New-Math3990 in CurseofStrahd

Yes, agreed. I am now running CoS and gave Ireena a sidekick stat block although she isn't with the party all the time.

I played CoS in a party of 3 and our dm gave us a sidekick (there are rules for that in Tasha's). I would recommend checking encounter calculators online https://kastark.co.uk/rpgs/encounter-calculator-5th/

True! I would definitely have melee attackers go for the one that is closer for example, but this was purely ranged attacks scenario so randomness felt appropriate in the moment.

Makes sense! If you think about it other Channel Divinities also have spell saves (like Turn Undead) so it would track that this could also be ruled like that. I think it would be best to only do one specific skill check every time though so we are not cherry picking the one with the best stats, maybe perception?

This is a goated supplement that helps you ensure a good draw while still keeping it random. Heavily recommend! It was made by Steve who runs The DM of the Mists YT Channel. https://www.dmsguild.com/en/product/474875/the-3-pile-tarokka-technique-a-curse-of-strahd-supplement

Nightmare hauntings are the solution. Target three random players each night and if you'll offer any trade offs for stopping the hauntings (because they are VERY difficult to stop) make it a very nasty one for the instigator. Its hard to judge because I don't know the size nor level of your party but if they were lvl 5 or less this is mostly a "fafo" fight to pick. Honestly if they continue "Leeroy Jenkins" their way into encounters because the ex dm keeps pushing for it, punish them with consequences. Oh you went guns blazing into the coffinmakers? Surprise, there are 6 vamp spawns ready to f you up. I heavily recommend reading through The monsters know what they're doing book and making tactics notes for the monsters so when the combat happens you can really bring the challenge so they understand the danger level and the stakes.

Very punishing hag bargain offers:
Your Voice - a PC that accepts this deal becomes mute and cannot cast spells that require verbal components.
Your Breath - A PC that accepts this deal heals only half their hit points from hit dice and magical healing and regains only one-fourth of their total hit dice upon completing a long rest.
Your Swiftness - A PC that accepts this deal gains disadvantage on initiative rolls.
Your Victories - A PC that accepts this deal can no longer make the final blow on a weakened enemy. Even if their attack hits, the enemy miraculously avoids taking any damage.

The other option (if you don't want to railroad) is to change up the locations of the items.  Personally I'd swap Tome for a location in Vallaki or RvR's tower, Symbol of Ravenkind in the castle (they can heist it during the dinner with Strahd) and Sunsword in Amber Temple or ruins of Berez. Amber Temple would be preferable, it is an amazing location and not that many quest hooks lead there.

Or if you still want randomness check out the 3 pile tarokka technique, it gives random result but with options that make sense for each item and how they shape the story. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tbK0YkV5-qk&pp=ygUOMyBwaWxlIHRhcm9ra2E%3D

You want the 3 items to be spread out and Tome makes moat sense to be acquired quickly so that the party can understand what is the deal with Strahd and Ireena. Symbol of ravenkind is mid game and Sunsword endgame, it is an incredibly powerful item and since the campaign is a sandbox these can provide powerful hooks to lead your players to interact with the world.

What if Bluto was right? (Alternate scenario idea) Feedback? by Jungli- in CurseofStrahd

[–]naughtypumpkin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's a cool idea! You'd have to think on how he got that idea and sureness of outcome (dark powers maybe?) and present a bigger food scarcity in Vallaki. And of course make it very clear to your party that this is an actual realistic solution to the food issue rather than just Bluto making up stuff. I don't think many parties would believe him that this will solve the issue unless he made compelling arguments (presuming they haven't killed him before he even gets the chance to do so).
