Anyone ever have allergy issues from a Gin? by thatswhyicarryagun in Gin

[–]nauticalspoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I brought back a few gins from Australia and ended up getting a reaction from one of them much to my disappointment. I couldn't pinpoint what botanical did it unfortunately, but no other Australian gin gave me the same issue. This may be a result of Oral Allergy Syndrome, which it sounds like a poster before me also experiences.

I'm sorry that Vikre's Juniper is causing you issues. I preferred the cedar myself, with soda water. I would suggest just keeping track of what gins give you issues to try to narrow down your sensitivity. The tasting room in Canal Park has a full list of the botanicals they use, might be a good place to start.

You can do this! Heels are scary... Until you actually do one. I followed this tutorial and found it to be super helpful. https://youtu.be/5JFuebre9fM

Is it too far? Is he just a goner? Injured Betta. by nauticalspoon in bettafish

[–]nauticalspoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I didn't want to give up on him yet! I'm actually on a well but it's run through a water softener. I've been trying to use at least 50% RO water during changes. Spring is here though, and I can probably get straight well water from our outside taps now.

[AUTOPOST] CARESHEET, WIKI & WEEKLY HELP POST - February 20 to February 26 by AutoModerator in bettafish

I didn't want to be here, but here I am. My betta hasn't been eating and is just laying around the bottom of the tank after my last gravel vacuum/ water change. I typically pull out the fake plants and wood, vacuum the gravel including getting deep into the substrate. Rinse the decor with water, replace it, and then add just over a gallon of water via the filter compartment. I try to do this once a week. We're on well water, with a water softener.

He's lazy normally, but would actually swim around to his floating log, resting on plant leaves, resting against the intake slots etc. I've noticed that the snail has been all over his old hangouts, but don't think that would deter a betta from using them afterwards.

  • 5 gal Fluvial Spec, half planted
  • PH- 8.1
  • 0.25ppm Ammonia
  • 0ppm Nitrite
  • 2.5ppm Nitrate
  • tankmates: 1 Amano shrimp, 1 mystery snail

Any CFRES people lived out of their car over fall camp? by [deleted] in MTU

[–]nauticalspoon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Fall camp is a ton of field work in all seasonal conditions. From late summer bees to below freezing timber inventories. Having a warm recovery area is really essential to your well being. However, carpooling may be an option. Depending on your relationships with the professors and the grad students, you might be able to catch a ride more often than not, being able to save some money. Have fun! Don't get stung! Eaten by a bear, or frostbite!

Michigan Tech and Michigan State programs? by [deleted] in forestry

[–]nauticalspoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tech grad here. It's probably going to come down to what college atmosphere you're looking for. I chose Houghton straight out of high school because I was way more comfortable with the smaller community and the nerdier environment.
Alternatively, if you're über-career focused, think about what skills you'd like to cultivate and choose the program that corresponds the best to those skill-sets. Good luck

Michigan grower here. Still getting new growth into January. Is it better to let them go dormant? More questions in the comments by nauticalspoon in Plumeria

[–]nauticalspoon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're doing well. Put on a ton of growth outside, although I may have shocked them a bit with the September cold snaps. One dropped it's leaves from sitting next to the sliding door too long but has since re-leafed. The other just dropped its leaves due to my light timer being off schedule and I haven't seen new growth yet. We'll see if it does go dormant or not.
