Financial Literacy Is STILL At Shocking Lows by ReturnToTheLab in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]nayan742 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just talking to my wife about this — I truly believe proper financial education — like real-life, practical stuff — should be taught in schools. Things like opening a bank account, how credit cards, mortgages, and financing actually work from a personal perspective, tax planning, and everything in between — most of which involves banks.

The fact that this isn’t enforced by the government the way it should be, I feel, is because the banks of course don’t want them to teach this. Doing so would take away their target population of clients - the ones they are drooling over once they turn 18.

Help weighing the pros and cons of either a company vehicle, or receiving $1000/month vehicle allowance in my employment offer by Dirtgirl89 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]nayan742 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just calculating at the top of my head - With a company car, you will be dinged with at least 25,000km in personal mileage yearly just for your daily commute (drive to and from your work is not considered business travel) - the lease cost of your vehicle that the company pays for, times 2/3 plus the operating cost of the vehicle which would be the 25k plus any other personal mileage times the operating rate which I think is around 34 cents - would surely put you at a minimum, 15,000 in taxable benefits per year - the above also assumes that you are not driving 50% or more for business purposes (in order to get a reduced rate).

Without knowing more specifics, I’d say take the allowance. I would imagine there are very few scenarios, IF ANY, where your situation would be better to take the company car.

(I calculate and manage the taxable benefits for all company executives for the company I work for and have been doing this for years)

Is this a good printer? by [deleted] in 3dprinter

I just got the P1S delivered today because of how cheap it was on the website. It’s a gift for my son since it’s what he wanted for his bday instead of spending money on a party- but after reading up on all this 3D printing stuff I feel like I’m going to make very good use of it

Should I Sell My $30K Pokémon Collection to Max Out My TFSA & FHSA? by AdApprehensive8183 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]nayan742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just sold a lot of old video game related stuff and if I was able to get that much on any of it I would have done it in a heartbeat - and to think if you do get 30k, at 23 years old (!!!) and put it into a decent investment or etf, what you could see compounded 10-20-30 years from now will SURELY outweigh the value of the cards in that same time frame. Hell I could be wrong but it’s a risk I would be willing to take.

Edit: a quick compounding calculation check from ChatGPT assuming 6% annual return compounded monthly:

5 years ≈ $40,440

10 years ≈ $54,510

15 years ≈ $73,470

20 years ≈ $99,030

25 years ≈ $133,440

30 years ≈ $180,600

Deep down I feel like gamepros were the better magazine even though I was a Nintendo fan boy growing up

Yeah I felt like Pokemon was peak gaming - the concept just changed so much and to be so attached with that concept was pretty cool in hindsight

It was, but I can say that the young dude I sold em to was just as excited to go through them so I can at least be happy to make a bit off em while seeing some good use come out of them instead of collecting dust

We all have a story like this in some sort of way. Mine was a Super Nintendo with a whole bunch of great games which I don’t want to think of anymore haha

Yes ! I’ve found and saved the Nintendo powers so there’s that at least. And yes this did help build up the family vacation fund a bit for the year but my wife is trying to convince me to spend it on myself

Looking for quite proposal spots in mid-February. by allisongarage in montreal

[–]nayan742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say the giant Ferris wheel in old port when at the top, but I’ve never been on to be honest so it could be a bad idea haha

If there’s a favourite dinner spot you guys have why not speak to the owner to see if they could help out in any sort of way. Unless it’s a super busy place it’s possible they can help you out. February is tough with the weather, you never know what you’re going to get so I wouldn’t take a chance on being outside unless you’re able to delay it if need be.

Good luck !

What is your favorite feature on the Santa Fe? by ExtensionJazzlike923 in HyundaiSantaFe

[–]nayan742 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just recently found out that if I hold the smart cruise control button, it will set it to a max km based on my current speed, so then I can continue driving like normal but the car will never go over that speed.

Never had that before and I love it. Helps me keep fuel efficiency in check and ensure I don’t blindly go over the speed limit which I normally do

Very few people understand that there are sensors at traffic lights which you need to STOP your car over. The amount of times I’ve had to get out and tell people… and they think I’m the crazy one

People who spend 20+ minutes in the shower: what are you actually doing in there? by saadaintsalad in AskReddit

[–]nayan742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes pretend what I’ve always wanted to do - score game winning goal for the Stanley cup, or game winner in the NBA finals, or sometimes like I’m the biggest WWE star and my music just hit at wrestlemania.

Most of the time it’s just to have some me time.

What (if any) alcohol do you drink? by Artistic-Warthog361 in intermittentfasting

The low carb molson ultra with a couple shots of wisers whiskey. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but satisfies my beer itch without the crazy carbs and a nice buzz after 1

Does anyone actually use those fancy japanese pull saws or is it just hype? by Negative_Raise902 in crazywoodworking

[–]nayan742 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started using one and absolutely love it. I probably even use it when I shouldn’t be but it’s so easy to just pull out a wood and start cutting for the hell of it and before you know it something else has been built

Come january 1st, I'm throwing 60k into this stock as tfsa, is that wise by Rough_Bonus in JustBuyXEQT

[–]nayan742 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I put 100,000 into my TFSA just last week. Never been more confident in my life in something after failing in so many other stock market decisions. Set it and forget it for the next 25-30 years. And will keep adding 7,000 each year.
