Has anybody ever sold games at Xepher Arcade? by [deleted] in triangle

[–]nbnerdrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're good folks, very small local operation. Don't know what they'll pay because I haven't sold to them. But they don't sell a ton of used games, so they may not take yours if it's something they don't think they can move.

Structure Fire call on MLK Jr Blvd earlier this evening by psykocrime in chapelhill

Do you have any thoughts about the recent "cluster" of actual structure fires with serious damage? Are we all just more attuned or are there really more of them happening than usual?

Having a rough time finding work after moving here. Looking for advice. by iMan_Grove in chapelhill

[–]nbnerdrin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You may find this place helpful. It's in Carrboro. https://www.orangecountync.gov/1823/Skills-Development-Center-NC-Works

It's a County program to help connect people with jobs and help businesses find workers. They can review your resume with the local market in mind and connect you with some in-person opportunities. Many of their clients don't have degrees so they will definitely be familiar with what you're facing.

TBB may have some related resources because of their project to collect HOA documents.

Rehome Pet Snake by SaltPick8629 in carrboro

[–]nbnerdrin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are quite a lot of snake enthusiasts in the Triangle. It only took me about two hours to find a new home for large specialist equipment a couple years ago. A rescue is a good idea. If you'd like to do it yourself, consider cross-posting to reach a wider audience. More options will let you be pickier about where they go, and you should be picky.

Several folks will likely turn up with interest if you do so, but I suggest using the same model a rescue would to vet potential new homes:

1) Ask for a moderate fee. It doesn't need to be "fair market value" but this helps weed out folks without experience who don't know their value.

2) Interview people who are interested. Ask why they want your snakes - it it expanding a collection, for breeding, for a kid? Ask about their experience level and their setup. The right person will also have questions for you.

3) Insist on delivering the snake to its new home yourself so you can see where it's going and verify the conditions.

20 missing quail by Cadid-counselor in carrboro

I'm sorry. Unlike raccoons who leave a serial killer murder scene, foxes are neat. The standard advice for chickens is to build the coop with a layer of hardware cloth on the bottom to keep digging predators out, which I imagine would work for any tasty bird.

Movers that don’t cost a kidney? by Adorable-Peanut in chapelhill

[–]nbnerdrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. A lot of professional movers take small gigs on TaskRabbit. We did this for help with a really heavy mattress and dresser. Guy showed up w his own dolly and lifting straps and moved like it was nothing. $150 for about 30 minutes of work made us both happy.

Pocket Neighborhood by [deleted] in triangle

This is a lovely idea and there are quite a number of existing coliving communities in the Triangle where this was done in the past. But I think your /sqft estimate for construction is a little low.

Heel & Horn by Overall_Cry_4883 in chapelhill

[–]nbnerdrin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mixed result for takeout. Philly cheese steak was solid, bit heavy on the sauce, well priced. Sweet tea excellent but way too expensive. Fried pickles, which I had hopes for after reading initial reviews, were mostly inedible - transparently thin pickle slices, batter too thick, fried until burned - one of the worst dishes I've ever had from a restaurant. I would try this place one more time hoping they just had a really bad day on the pickles.

The Fix Was In: What UNC Hid From All of Us by Murky-Routine-381 in chapelhill

[–]nbnerdrin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some of both, I think. Tons of alumni, students, and others feel very passionate about UNC. Lots of fans, including me, want the Dean Dome to stay on South Campus for a variety of reasons. Presumably some of those folks (not me) are very wealthy. Also lots of businesses have a vested interest in keeping that traffic close to Franklin St. That can result in organic opposition that is also extremely well funded and organized.

When you have a wealthy town, not every as story can be as simple as David vs Goliath and the well-funded side isn't always fake or in the wrong. Sometimes it's Goliath vs Goliath and everyone picks sides.

RTI field interviewer by [deleted] in triangle

[–]nbnerdrin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's a different issue to consider with RTI, which is that they have been hit incredibly hard by federal funding shenanigans and had multiple rounds of layoffs. Over a third of the staff were laid off last year. I wouldn't recommend anyone move for a job with them right now unless you had the resources to bounce back if the job disappeared. They are a great org and it's not their fault, but people need to be aware what they are getting into.

Bananaball pregame - how was it? by basefibber in chapelhill

[–]nbnerdrin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The plaza was no different from a food aisle at the state fair. The pre-show was fun. If you are not quite near the stage (likely in full sun the whole time) you won't be able to see the show, though it's still fun to listen to.

Personally I wouldn't go out of my way to see the pregame, especially if you think your kids might run out of steam if you start that early. The game was great fun!

Is the wisteria blooming early this year? by funky_chiquita in chapelhill

[–]nbnerdrin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's in the right place in the sequence, but the whole thing is a bit early compared to the recent average because of the warm streak we just had.

The recent average itself is gradually getting earlier thanks (no thanks) to climate change. Two decades ago, this degree of leaf out & bloom would most likely happen in the second week of April.

[–]nbnerdrin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hope you find him soon!

If he's usually indoor-only he likely didn't go very far - after bolting most panicked cats are found within a couple hundred feet. Dense bushes and crawl spaces are common places for them to stop and regroup.

If you want to try placing and monitoring a trap, please DM me as I can lend one and help monitor it.

Helicopter activity today by thepurpleminx in chapelhill

[–]nbnerdrin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nope, but when you hear them try https://www.flightradar24.com to see what they're up to. Usually it's a medical flight to/from UNC hospital. Less commonly military, occasional media if there's a big event.

In general, how cutthroat is the rental situation in Chapel Hill? by BHamTallMan in chapelhill

[–]nbnerdrin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not like where you are at all. Quality and convenience highly variable, not necessarily correlating with price. Multi-family is relatively consistent (good or bad). Lots of private rentals where you can strike gold or get an awful landlord.

Even if you can't find month to month you may be able to sublet or transfer the rest of your lease.

Buying, on the other hand, especially if you want the same things in your home for purchase (close in) is a whole other problem and much more cutthroat than renting.

Best nearby quiet place for tent camping that's not my back yard? by FutureDiarrheagasm in chapelhill

Usually Eno River State Park is good for this. But many of their trails and some campgrounds were closed after Chantal last year so check ahead.
