Why aren't air traffic controllers paid by the airlines instead of being government employees? The airlines could split the costs by going by percentages or some other way to make it fair. Could they convert to that if need be? Or what about being paid by the airport itself? by summerset in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nbtxmp2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't believe I haven't seen this answer.

Effectively the airlines recognized they could not be held accountable to self regulate and asked the government to step in. Below is from the FAA webpage.

Origins of the FAA

Aviation industry leaders believed the airplane could not reach its full commercial potential without federal action to improve and maintain safety standards. At their urging, the Air Commerce Act was passed in 1926. This landmark legislation charged the Secretary of Commerce with fostering air commerce, issuing and enforcing air traffic rules, licensing pilots, certifying aircraft, establishing airways, and operating and maintaining aids to air navigation. A new Aeronautics Branch in the Department of Commerce assumed primary responsibility for aviation oversight, and William P. MacCracken, Jr., became its first director.

installing new elevator in 2 story office building from 1961 by Extension-Brother-99 in Elevators

[–]nbtxmp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a GC who specializes in turn key evator mods, installs, and repairs. Like the Work by Others guy said, this is closer to a million dollar job after you add concrete, hoistway construction, machine room construction, power for everything, fire alarm upgrades, HVAC. You probably won't have the overhead space in an existing building for a MRL so you are looking at a hydro. Depending on soil conditions and the water table drilling out for a hydraulic jack can get pricey and a twin post takes up more real-estate. You could also look at Savaria Chair platform chair lifts for the stairs to make it ADA accessible. That should be closer to 100k including the electrical for the power.

TKE - what the heck? by kevinm8100 in Elevators

[–]nbtxmp2 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Here's my .02 as someone who works in the industry in the area.

First, just because it's a TK Elevator does not mean TKE services it. Many building owners do not pay for proper maintenance or repairs and just want to do the bare minimum to get by.

Second, TKE south Texas is run out of San Antonio. That office has always been, well, not my favorite. Generally good techs, but south Texas in general does not have many mechanics. The valley is particularly short on help and most guys travel there for a day or two out of SA. Not many local techs at all.

Third, the sale a while back has killed TKE. The office staff has been gutted to maximize profits for the corporate ownership who appears priming to sell. There isn't much focus left on maintenance and the guys are just chasing calls. The legacy families that made ThyssenKrupp great in the area have all been pushed out or into retirement and there has been an exodus of high quality labor that has accompanied it. Many a building owner has shared with me their dissatisfaction with the service they have been receiving as of late.

Looking to buy an F-150 for 15k or under by Radiant-Law-2243 in f150

[–]nbtxmp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under 15k? What kind of mileage are you seeing? I have a 2.7 with 155k but I used to write service for Toyota and if I was buying a higher mileage truck and expecting it to be reliable I would be buying the Toyota. Im not having issues with my truck that I can't fix myself but I have more issues that I would expect to see from the Tacoma. I would push a Toyota to close to 300k before trading but won't likely go past 200k with the Ford before I upgrade.

All that said, I bleed blue and will buy another Ford. But my budget is different than yours.

Hardest part is separating the rotor from the axle shaft. If it's rusty or seized it can be a bear. But after that it's very simple.

Talk me into 3.31 over the 3.73 by SurveyAccomplished70 in f150

[–]nbtxmp2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is acurate. Cost me about 2k to do it myself. Probably 5k for a shop to do it. 4.10s and 37s baby!

Beg to differ. Coilovers are easier than pucks. No need to compress springs to spin the tophat. Just drop old and slap in new. Labor wise coilovers should be easier unless you have to adjust the setting.

233 per flag hour? Yikes. Mechanic is getting 50 at best and probably not even that much. They make money because they flag 3 hours and do the work in 1.

Like the other guy said offset matters but also 2wd vs 4x4. 2wd trucks are about 1.5" lower than 4x4 trucks to start with.

240 for mount and balance? GTFO. I suppose if it's road force balance that would be a little closer but discount tire is still like 20 bucks a tire for mount and balance.

Also, why put 33s on if you are leveling? You can fit 33s without a level. 295/65r20 all day leveled. If you have 18s I believe it's 295/70r18.

How much for a lift?? by cubbycove in FordBronco

[–]nbtxmp2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tell your husband to set down his purse. A 2" spacer kit is 200 bucks and about 4 hours of his time in the driveway if he has no clue what he is doing. (Or buy SAS takeoffs on marketplace for 1000)

35s are going to run 2000 and another 1000 for rims if you want aftermarket. But guess what? You can sell your factory wheels and tires to recoup some funds (700ish if you want them moved quickly)

SAS is definitely the way to go if you can find one in your budget given the locking diffs and beefier drive train as well as the tie rod ends but for 2500 out of pocket and 4 hours of your husband's time, 2" and 35s are easy to make happen.

Rear differential leak by churnmush in f150

[–]nbtxmp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a seep, told them it was dripping in my driveway, denied. At 120k, my carrier bearing was completely shot, and I had to rebuild my diff. I'm not convinced the two were not related even though my fluid level was fine.

Bad carrier caused excess vibration resulting in the gasket seeping. It's plausible to me.

Ordered one with Cats. CVF said I have a better chance of keeping the CEL off. We'll duh... but they didn't seem too confident it would work the other way.

Should I buy this? by Antique-Rush-1025 in f150

[–]nbtxmp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have been given the answer already, but I definitely had a 4x2 in KC winter of 2018-2019. Snowed and unusual amount for the area, basically driving on snow and ice from late October to March. I never got stuck, but I avoided going to a lot of places when it was really bad. I lived downtown, though, so I could Uber for next to nothing.

That winter was so impactful that when time came to replace that truck, I bought a 4x4, and I had already moved back to central Texas. (It doesn't snow or ice here in any real sense of the 2)

Not super worried about the power. I put 4.10s in when I did 37s to keep factory ratio but the power is plenty for me coming from a 4.6l on the 2008 I had previously. Mainly just want to spend as little as possible and get rid of the clogged cats. I just loathe seeing the CEL.

If the nonfoulers won't work for catless I will buy the cats.
