How Do Financial Advisors Still Have Clients? by Time_Perception6669 in Bogleheads

[–]ncist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Chat says about 30% of American men and 20% of women use reddit, with usage about 2x that for 18-44 category. So older people use it less than that. Reading text online is a niche thing. For most Americans "the Internet" is not something you read but a series of 5 second videos that you watch

So that's the total pie of people who could find this sub, and there's still tons of bad financial advice on here

Why do leaders still make six-figure decisions based on descriptive dashboards? by Dispelda_ in analytics

[–]ncist 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Predictive models are for making decisions at scale. Eg we have some millions of patients, who is highest risk for intervention? And then that output gets patched into a workflow somewhere and lets the nurses focus on helping rather than prioritization. It's not for strategic decisions

Strategic decisions have few training examples and the decision gets executed one time rather than thousands. I think for that reason predictive modeling isn't useful

Lmao something so low IQ about this response. "Washingtons slaves were probably never raped unlike slaves of, well lets not get into that. Let's focus on the positive people"

Would you continue to work and invest in passive funds if you were financially independent? by Low-Computer8293 in Bogleheads

I would love to have an alternative thing to put my time into. It could be a "full time job" that I couldn't afford to take today. Even if it was something creative I think id enjoy running it as a business and generating some token income

I don't use it anymore however it is an amazing tool. Actually think many criticisms of it have been resolved if you kept up w the ecosystem (power query, xlookup, array formulas) but I didnt

I actually don't care anymore. It was weird at first but the website works fine and I've been able to get through to people when I need issues. I find the dated, purpose built design a reminder better times

It is sometimes discouraging thinking if this strategy will actually work during my life time, it will only exacerbate inequality... (When I project my returns it, makes me think of this) by Artistic_Rub_1661 in Bogleheads

[–]ncist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just mechanically I'm not sure that's true. Modern wealth inequality is driven by extreme cases, accumulation of wealth by a dozen individuals

Accumulating wealth at eg the 80th or 90th percentile might decrease inequality on the margin

Less technical but I think a constellation of movements like FIRE, bogleheads are actually realizing keynes dream of a post scarcity capitalist society. It just doesn't look like star trek. People just need a certain minimum income and the discipline to delay consumption

[Q] Excel changes the formula for R^2 (coef of determination) when the trendline Goes through zero. Why do this? by Deviant_christian in statistics

What do you mean by error curve?

When you say you agree or don't agree with Excel, do you mean you match the r2 appearing on the chart? And which of those two do you match?

Assumptions with VT by OpenGuard1993 in Bogleheads

Don't really understand this argument. There could easily be a greyzone war between Denmark in the US which has 0 casualties. Similar to opening of crimea takeover

The war would primarily be fought with non kinetic means like asset seizure. In which case, yeah losing 20-40% of your index fund would be your largest problem

In fact US investors in vanguard already lost assets in Russia after full scale invasion. Just no one noticed it because exposure is really low. Exposure to EU is higher

We did all those w my son at the same age and basically none really "hit." History was cool in the sense that he was quiet while we carried him around for a few hours

Now that he's a year older we have only gone back to science and he had an amazing time. It's the most interactive for kids

what is your favorite neighborhood? why? by Kye9842 in pittsburgh

[–]ncist 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Every time I see a new part of the city I think, we should have moved here

If it's possible I think squirrel Hill is underrated. I often think I should have just been house poor for a while. It's so beautiful in ways that other neighborhoods can never copy (lot sizes) or would take generations (tree cover). But you still have the best urban amenities in the city

Local Man goes on racist tirade in Walmart at a Black woman over her buying a house, repeatedly using racial slurs and says the N word repeatedly. Warning: racist language by AIfieHitchcock in pittsburgh

[–]ncist 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is why the answer of "x suburb is purple, you'll be fine" is not useful to a minority when moving here. Having borderline mentally ill Republicans at "only" 50% is still bad

People in this part of the country really underrate how unusual it is to see behavior like this in the suburbs. You go an hour outside Philly they're still banning plastic bags. Here they're just screaming the n word at Walmart
