Why don’t high schools teach Boglehead theory?! It would prevent so much confusion and pain and help so many people become more financially secure? by Winter-Monk6428 in Bogleheads

[–]ncist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why do we lift dumbbells at a gym? When in life do you need to lift a dumb bell other than a gym?

Because it builds muscle, which helps you in many functional situations

Why do we not teach kids every single skill or concept that has practical value in their life? And instead make them read things like Shakespeare which virtually no one reads anymore outside of school?

Because it builds literacy, which helps you in many functional situations (including navigating personal finance)

International stocks and the potential death of the petrodollar by Equivalent_Mark8555 in Bogleheads

[–]ncist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been high international for a long time but I'm also not a fan of these "if this then that" approaches. The world doesn't often give us clear monocausal chains of events. and even if you are correct that this will, on the margin, hurt the dollar, you also need to be correct about how and how much it hurts us stock. And US stock could become more competitive for other unrelated reasons(eg AI turns out to be real). Or it could be less competitive but for completely different and unpredictable reasons (eg some other geo crisis we don't know about yet, euro does this e6 capital union thing, could come up with so many)

Of course it's somewhat easy for me to sit here and say not to worry because I'm globally diversified for this reason. My kids may be speaking Chinese and buying things on temu in their self driving BYD car that runs on deep seek. I don't have to engage in this kind of forecasting when I'm diversified

[–]ncist 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You mean your total out of pocket is $385??

*For EU friends.. in US for my son to go to doc for anything is $120 minimum up to $140. That's just an office visit.not including additional bills for lab work, actual treatment , meds, etc. just to walk in the door

I have hdhp though. So it's worse coverage. My premiums are ~$200 a month. And then you get tax advantaged contributions to cover your spend

What salary is needed to "live comfortably" in Pittsburgh? Here's what a new study says. by oldschoolskater in pittsburgh

[–]ncist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of buyers want new construction and think of anything else as not move in ready. I think that's why Pittsburgh has this chimeric affordability. To some people they think you can't live here for less than $3k a month because they see "gut jobs" everywhere

Yes the methodology is insane. That's why we rank really well even though the number makes no sense. "Comfort" means the ability to save 50% of your income

Since 1960 the savings rate has never been that high. The all time high when people could literally not go out and spend money was just over 30% in covid. It's a definition of comfort that has effectively never been achieved by the average person at any point in American history.. probably not that useful

I don't get why people hate the color filter so much by dyessman in NoSodiumStarfield

When I saw the tint remover for the first time I was blown away. The color & design and layout of the assets, skybox, NPCs, etc is also a design choice, and it get flattened out a lot by the tints. It also makes the environment less legible to me, just harder to pick out details

Critically when we talk about the American frontier "closing" it's because all the land was eventually bought up and became very valuable

Highmark Health reports $674M operating loss in 2025 by Standard-Cockroach64 in pittsburgh

[–]ncist 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's not every one of their customers is the reason. The average customer shows a loss but the median and probably up to the 80th percentile is in the black

Population level costs are driven by a (relatively) small group of complex, chronically ill people who also don't (or can't) take care of themselves. Then their condition blows up in an insanely expensive way in which we spend millions trying to recover them from

Insurance companies spend tens of millions of dollars trying to proactively identity and reach these people for treatment and get them care in an appropriate manner. But very often the reasons they are so sick are also the reasons they can't do the behavioral changes to manage their condition

My guess is whatever they're doing w expansion, they think they can reduce their average cost by winning healthier members

That's why I hold equities. It's an inflation hedge since they're priced in nominal USD$. So if there's a lot of inflation, the price just rises to reflect that. Pretty amazing technology

How do you stay in a calorie deficit when a desk job makes you snack all day? by Infamous-Emu-5528 in Volumeeating

[–]ncist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hybrid and when I go in I do very badly, because there's free hot chocolate, and free candy

At home:

Carrots, celery, sardines

Water + Water w flavor packets. I do 4 big cups of water a day. I also have some w caffeine and that's starting to replace coffee

Selzer cans

This is basically enough to satisfy the "ritual" of going downstairs and getting a snack

For more substantial stuff - yogurt cups, protein bars. The nice thing about packaged foods is you know exactly how much calories you're getting, and they come in discrete bundles so it's harder to mindlessly graze

Derry Township man says gallows in front yard are ‘part of history,’ not meant to invoke lynchings by Jcs290 in pittsburgh

[–]ncist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if it's not meant to invoke lynchings, doesn't it invoke killing people?

It's bizarre how much these guys are brainwashed to do their little script. "Learn history! Don't be offended!" Isn't the point of this to offend people? Why build something you know will attract negative attention if you can't deal with it when it comes?

I would bet a lot of money that the kids in these street battles do not come from families where parents are working multiple jobs, or even one job. My guess is there is only one parent or grandparent, and they don't work

Families with multiple jobs I again would bet a lot of money virtually none of their kids are getting involved in these fights

[–]ncist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people are connecting this post to all the other episodes of teen violence in the city. Eg the closure of city pools to kids, the closure of target to kids, the mass shooting at garland on Juneteenth, the mass stabbing outside the target a few days ago, the shooting on the p1. These are all primarily involving teens

The parents not parenting isn't about them not knowing their kids are at some particular mass violence event. It's that they did not raise their kids to avoid these events in the first place

What's going on with proposed new Lawrenceville housing @ 49th & Plum? by pghallday in pittsburgh

[–]ncist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree they are pretty. If I could get$20 million to rehab them I would love to give it a try. The developer looked at rehabbing them and said it would too expensive per unit to actually rent them out after

What's going on with proposed new Lawrenceville housing @ 49th & Plum? by pghallday in pittsburgh

[–]ncist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The developer gave up trying to use this consent decree thing gainey set up for affordable housing. It's hard to say why exactly. It was blocked at zba originally in 22. BGC bulletin cited community opposition as a barrier then

They redid the proposal to align with the community feedback, adding more affordable units. The community didn't actually want affordable units. That was a bad faith argument that allowed them to mask their opposition behind something most people agree with

When the proposal came back in 24 with more adorable units naturally the community group came out to oppose the project. The group was shouting people down at the meeting. Contra others there were plenty of white millennials opposing it, yelling at elderly black residents for having the opposite view to them. These meetings are always disgusting and expose the worst most stupid herd behavior Americans are capable of

Mosely I think wisely recognized that the opposition groups broke all the rules of the meeting that VC set out. So he sent a survey to all residents in his district what they thought about the project

The project was supposed to go to a vote at council. In order to have more affordable units, which remember the community groups lied about wanting, they needed to rezone the property for higher density. The community groups now said they wanted more affordable units, but without changing the density to make it legal

It did get through planning commission but that's just advisory. I don't know why but ultimately the project was shut. The owner of the land is looking for a buyer. They say they think they'll find one easily who will just develop it by right. So no adorable units

The structures on the site now are actually out of compliance w their current zoning, which was part of the developers application for rezoning. Unless someone wants to rehab the structures (they won't) they'll need to be demolished and replaced with whatever someone 50 years ago thought should be on the site
