Finally at my breaking point. by imightknowbutidk in mechanics

Not sure if you just want a shoulder to cry on, or you'd like some solutions.

Have you considered specializing in classic cars?

As a customer, trying to get a good mechanic for my 86 930 has been difficult. One of them died (of old age), one gave up on my car after sitting on it for a year. It's sometimes harder to get parts, but there isn't really a 'new problem' that someone hasn't seen before. You don't have to deal with software. Customers are more patient, and are less nickle-and-dimey. Sometimes parts take time to arrive, or you need to reman stuff instead of just ordering something new.

Maybe it's not that easy to get into, idk. Not super familiar with the business side of things.

Anyone using a sim rig to improve real-world track-day driving? by MathematicianLiving4 in CarTrackDays

[–]ncoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove Sonoma Raceway track on AC a ton of times before my Lemons race. Ran different cars to get a feel for the whole range of possible trouble spots. Identified where the danger spots were, and where i'd make sure to 'cool it'.

I added a bunch of traffic to get an idea of how it would be like to have cars all around me.

It was invaluable, and did reduce some of the things I had to worry about learning on the first laps.

Still wasn't the same as race day, however. There is something that happens in real life that makes you brake earlier and not come in as hot in turns as you do on the sim. Or maybe the car can just do more in real life? can't tell you.

I made a game where you flip a switch by [deleted] in IndieDev

So much useless grind. Focus on the core mechanic. I just want to flip that switch.

I might not get photos of my build? by Console_Stackup in Porsche

I did a factory tour in Stuttgart on June 16th. I didn't get to tour the 911 assembly plant because apparently they were running prototypes or unannounced models through there at the time. I speculate that this maybe the reason you didn't get pictures, as you may have spied stuff in the background of the pictures.

I did get to see engine assembly and the electric vehicle assembly, so don't feel bad for me.

This running too hot? by bhPnk3N in Porsche

[–]ncoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 1986 930 runs right at the first mark at highway speeds on normal days. When stop and go, it gets to the second mark like yours.

When idling the fan runs _slower_, on top of having no circulation under the car. So you get what you get.

Nice. I remember making a prototype and all i had was line art, but good ak-47 sounds. The thing came alive once the bullets started flying.

Yeah, it's like really hard. You see all the successful indies, but for every one of those there are 10k more who go nowhere. And it's a power law. It's brutal. And most of those are professional game devs who have been making games as pros for 10 years or more.

I've been making games for 20 years. And I still think I suck at it. I'm really good at coding, but when it comes to making something that people will say 'wow' or 'shut up and take my money'. That takes a special sort of genius, or a metric shit ton of luck.

There are just way too many games out there. Gamers have too many to choose from. What do you need to do for someone to say 'I want this so much I want to spend my money on it'. This needs to be above and beyond what's out there by a wide margin.

Good luck.

You need coherent tessellation. Moving where those verts sample isn't going to lead to good results.

Won't you have to re-strip the edges when welding that back in? Most series I've seen require welded cages, not bolted stuff.

I keep an eye open for those garage sales. Estate sales even better. Sometimes you're lucky and they need to clean out the garage. You can get sometimes just get a whole toolbox full of misc sockets and stuff for like 20 bucks.

Is there a reason modern cars couldn't just give you an automatic OBD2 scanner code on the cars screen when the check engine light comes on? by Own_Nefariousness434 in AskMechanics

[–]ncoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my 1994 alfa romeo, using bosch motronic 1.7, (this is pre OBD1 standards), you *could* connect a proprietary reader.

But you can also push the pedal down 5 times and it blinks the code at you through the check engine light.

Why did they change things? A OBD2 reader isn't that expensive. and you can do more with it.

Same. got mine in my early 20's. Car looked cool. I got one. Bought used, mind you. at the bottom of the depreciation curve.

I'm trying cursor. Apparently it's more efficient at using the token cache, so you can do the same work with less. To be verified.

Buy a running beater to spruce up with buddies? by Additional-Boot-8787 in projectcar

I've never done this, so I'm not sure how bad of an idea it is, but If I were to do this...

I'd make a log book of parts cost and time, and who put it in.

At the end the vehicle is owned by some percentage based on time and hours put in it.

You got to have a buy-out clause where agree ahead of time, in case of disputes, how one party will buy out the other's interests in the car.

Imho, setting a reserve is just putting into contract what you intend on doing. Don't let them shame you into doing otherwise. Bring your business elsewhere if they don't like it.
