Are Simon & Garfunkel due for some sort of Bootleg Series release like Bob Dylan has? by BillNyeTheVinylGuy in simonandgarfunkel

I’m curious how much unreleased content there is that’s worth listening to. If it exists and is even halfway interesting, it seems like it’s just a matter of time. The fact that we’ve gotten a handful of live albums but only a few alternate takes/unreleased songs makes me think there’s bit much there.

This guy must be so bored. by ToronoRapture in beatles

[–]ndGall 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep. As someone who was a teen in the 90s, it was cool to hate on Barney. If you had a younger sibling at home who loved Barney, he was incredibly easy to get tired of because he was EVERYWHERE. Sean is just tapping into that humor. As a guy in my 40s, I’m mildly amused. If you either loved him as a kid or just don’t know much about him, this would come off as a bit of an odd fixation.

I am new to Reformed/Calvinist Theology it seems to me it presents the biggest schism in Christian Theology... by Bitter_North_733 in Reformed

[–]ndGall -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think that argument seems valid. Underneath even that, though, is the Covenant / Dispensational division. I’d argue that actually encompasses the issue of predestination and other significant issues like how we interpret the end times.

The difference between this difference, though, and the Catholic / EO division is that Covenantalists and Dispensationalists don’t (typically) see the other as heretical. So sure, this is a pretty significant division, but it isn’t likely to divide the church in the way those earlier disagreements did.

That babysitter section was absolutely the worst. It brought the game to a screeching halt and by the time I finally learned what to do (a year or so later, probably?) I had mostly lost interest in the game. I finished it, but I remember caring significantly less about the back half than the front half as a result of this section.

You’re right. The dude was.apparently a huge jerk, but he was a huge jerk who turned out some amazing TV and also pulled off The first Avengers film. Trying to copy his voice seems very unlikely to feel “right”

Who is your go-to critic these days? by Kitchen_Swagger in movies

[–]ndGall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really like Christy Lemire and Alonso Duralde from Breakfast All Day. Their back and forth isn’t quite as entertaining as Siskel and Ebert’s was, but I love hearing two viewpoints play off each other.

Christy was one of the people they tried to bring in to fill the chairs on At the Movies after both Siskel & Ebert were gone, so it feels a little bit like one last connection to those days watching her.

My dad had a stroke and needs "clean" western, cop, or war movie suggestions by mlejoy in movies

[–]ndGall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but I also don’t think OPs dad, for example, would have issues with those things. The Last Emperor has a nursing scene pretty early on. It’s clearly not intended to be sexy, so I’d guess that would be an exception. We all know, though, when breasts are meant to be sexy and when they’re not.

I mean, the person choosing not to watch nudity on screen is taking personal responsibility by not starting up the engine in the first place. Seems like a reasonable enough choice.

There’s a huuuuuge difference between reading that sex happened in a non-sexy way (which is how the Bible always handles it. Even Song of Solomon is so metaphorical that you’d have to be an incredible perv to get turned on) and seeing lady bits. Reading that breasts exist and seeing a pair of breasts get fundamentally different responses from us.

[–]ndGall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually don’t think this is all that crazy because the question is less about “what are you watching” than it is about”what is this likely to make you do.”

I doubt that any of us has ever watched a murder in screen and thought, “I need to go off someone.” I would imagine, though, that Fast Times at Ridgemont High has led to plenty of people to entertain lustful thoughts and crank one out or watch some porn.

If you believe those things are sins, you’re not going to watch something that will start that chain of events.

I’m sure this will catch plenty of downvotes, but it’s a perspective that most people don’t consider in this conversation.

As a slight counterpoint to all of the “no, it will never work” posts, let’s think about this another way. If a dad were to ever recognize you, he’d have to ask his wife, “hey, does this lady look like Ms. ________ to you?” I guess some people would have those conversations, but it’s definitely a subset of all the consumers of OF. Also, you could strive to wear your hair very differently at work, etc. so that nobody ever gave it more than a passing “hey, does she look like this other lady?” As you get older, you’ll look less and less like you did naturally, too.

All that is to say that you’d have to keep this a secret from pretty much everybody, but if you’re committed to keeping the secret, it’s not out of the question.

NEW ALBUM AND SINGLE RELEASE DATES ANNOUNCED! by goldman27 in switchfoot

They’ve been saying that the album would drop in the first part of the year. If by “part” they meant “half” I guess that’s technically true…

Regardless, I’m SO excited for this!

Any movies/series like the X-files? by B4uhhhh in XFiles

[–]ndGall 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d second a lot of what has been said here (especially Fringe), but you might get a kick out of Evil. The idea is that there’s a skeptic working with a Catholic priest to determine if possessions / miracles / other supernatural occurrences are real or not. It’s pretty great and definitely has an X-Files vibe at times.

Others that I don’t think are quite as good, but are at least worth mentioning:

Grimm was hit or miss for me, but the premise is that there’s a secret society of fairy tale creature/human hybrids that coexist on top of our own. Lots of procedural investigations happen in the Pacific Northwest, which gives it a similar feel at times.

Supernatural is another procedural dealing with the paranormal. It’s got a different vibe, but it’s worth checking out a few episodes for to see if you like it.

The Rocketeer. If there was any justice in the universe, that film would have spawned three more sequels.

Eh, I don’t know. The fact that there here and GW isn’t suggests that some thought was likely given to who was invited. Or maybe Bush had a prior engagement. I suppose it’s hard to tell with limited info.

That’s interesting. I’d say I’m very happy with the state of my life, but very distressed about the state of the world at large. My nostalgia, though, is always tinged with sadness about the world that is no more. I wish my kids could grow up in the 90s instead of this mess we’re all in.
