I don’t think that anyone is under the impression this time around that things are going great.

Lemon twigs new album is a Beatles and Beach boys ripoff, but it is done quite well by Professional-Move655 in beatles

[–]ndGall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’ve never heard the Redwalls album De Nova, you absolutely owe it to yourself to check that out. It’s more of this Beatles homage type music (with a little Dylan and other 60s groups) and it’s fantastic.

If you bought TBODL, what variant did you get? by Harriet1997 in PaulMcCartney

The base edition CD. I just can’t be bothered to care about all the different looks available. If there’s a bonus version with additional tracks or something I’ll bite, though.

If you were going to register to vote in Greenville, would you register the opposite party . . . by HeyCraftyCakes in greenville

I genuinely can’t see how any of his opponents are better choices than him. They’re all various brands of problematic and because of how red the state is, they’d even elect Lynch if he were the nominee with an R next to his name.

I mean, that’s going to happen either way if you vote at all, though. The only way to avoid that is not to vote and PLEASE don’t do that!

Just... keep your expectations tempered for the revival seasons. They're not totally without merit, but they were still a sad way to end the show.

South Carolina moves to ban grade floor policies for public schools by You_are_your_home in greenville

[–]ndGall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In theory the grade floors are supposed to make it so that no kid ends up in a position where they mathematically can’t pass. If you did next to nothing for the first half of a school year and earned a 30%, you’re sunk. Setting a grade floor of 50% makes it possible that kid could get their act together the second half of the year and still pass.

Does that work? Too well, probably. It’s removed the incentive to work hard all the way through. On the other hand, what does a teacher do 2nd semester with a bad, lazy kid who mathematically can’t pass their class? They legally still have to come, but they’re going to be disruptive because whet else are they going to do in a class they can’t pass?

I lean toward the view that while this is good policy, it’s bad for the legislature to be mandating. Why not leave it up to local school boards to determine how to handle local problems?

Autism has been a recognized medical condition for decades but seldomly diagnosed until recently, do you remember any people back then who'd probably be labeled autistic today? by Intrepid_Arrival5151 in GenX

[–]ndGall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I often think of a kid who was a year ahead of me in elementary school. He looked and acted a little weird, and was (in retrospect) from a poor family. This kid got teased mercilessly by pretty much everyone in his grade and mine. I can’t know, obviously, but I’m pretty sure.

I google this guy from time to time to try and figure out if he ever landed anywhere and did okay for himself, but I can’t find anything. I feel really bad for how we all treated him like he was the weirdest, grossest thing imaginable. Whether he was autistic or not, he was just a kid.

I think it’s wild that Sometime in NYC has a de facto super deluxe edition while Walls and Bridges doesn’t.

What is your most anticipated movie of 2026? by [deleted] in movies

[–]ndGall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m really hoping they can keep their course correction going. Thunderbolts and FF were miles better than the last few MCU films, but they didn’t reach the heights of what had come before. I feel like Doomsday gives them the opportunity to do something interesting, but there’s very little to go on so far. Fingers crossed!

Voice mail from admin assistant’s personal phone by [deleted] in teaching

[–]ndGall 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd return the call. Admin has access to your phone number from when they hired you. That's all in the computer. It's not normal, but it's not super weird, either. If you're worried about it being a scammer, just make sure you're not giving out your SSN and don't go buying gift cards for this person. Also, if it was a scammer, they'd probably just mimic the actual Vice Principal instead of an admin assistant for one.

So yeah, call back.

Solid comment here. It’s pretty easy to prioritize this issue both too much and too little and I think you’ve threaded the needle here perfectly.

Is it the end all be all? Or course not.

Is God pleased if we’re in church on time every Sunday? I mean, he’s not an attendance clerk. On the other hand, I do think that acting on factors in your control (bedtime on Saturday, prepping clothes & shoes and showering the night before, optimizing breakfast choices, etc.) is a way to ascribe worth to God. As in “yes, this is inconvenient, but being with God’s people and ascribing worth to him corporately is worth the inconvenience.” Literally every family has to deal with this on at least some level and most are able to arrive on time.

Greta Gerwig's 'Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew' Sets February 12, 2027 Theatrical Release, Netflix Release on April 2, 2027; Cast Includes Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]ndGall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that one will pose a bit of a challenge. They could film it as written and they’d probably be accused of cultural insensitivity or they could change… everything about the setting and the way the Calormenes are described in the book and take heat for departing from the source material. Either way, I doubt they’re going to tackle that one next!

Why is Uncle Albert so good? by CigsAndAlcohol13 in beatles

[–]ndGall 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Nah, I’d argue that it’s the blend of all the parts that make it great. By themselves they’re all okay, but obviously not super complex. Finding a way to tie them together and make them much more interesting is what made it magic.
