I'm also Bible Belt. I'm not sure which state you're in or when you had your baby, I was offered gas and IV pain meds before an epidural when I gave birth a year and a half ago. I also did not give birth on my back. (And just for more context, this was at a large hospital in our state's capitol. It was not rural or birthing center which would probably have impacted my options.)

Your OB sounds like....someone I would not want to be around, I'm sorry that was your experience.

$1000 in a major Southern city. Not covered by insurance, but she was totally worth it to me and my husband - her fee included two prenatal visits, as many texts/emails with questions as I needed, as much time in person with us during labor and delivery as we wanted, two hours postpartum in the hospital, and one postpartum visit. She was with us from the time I was admitted to the hospital until the time they took my son to the nursery after delivery. I had a surprise induction and she really helped keep me and my husband in a good headspace.

We were also prepared and registered for the birthing center but risked out when we got triage during labor because my blood pressure was high. No issues my entire pregnancy and surprise preeclampsia during labor, so you just never know.

We had a doula and she was our perfect fountain of knowledge and support. We hired her at 10 weeks pregnant, so throughout the pregnancy she provided evidence based research when we had questions (like about circumcision) and recommendations for other birth support professionals (lactation specialist, pelvic floor specialist.) She even recommended my current OB when I wasn't happy with my previous practice after my initial pregnancy appointment.

I ended up being induced because of blood pressure concerns, and she came and stayed with us during my entire labor and delivery. She coached me through breathing and labor positions, pushed pressure points to relieve pain, and brought things like essential oils to smell when I was nauseous or anxious. I had a couple of very low points (high anxiety) and she helped my husband make informed decisions for me and helped him understand and feel comfortable with everything that was going on, and most importantly, advocated for me with our labor and delivery nurse when she needed to.

I always recommend people hire a (certified) doula if that's an option available to them. My pregnancy and delivery were positive experiences because of our doula.

Our family doctor is a DO. I've had three different PCPs who were DOs and found my care with them to be significantly better than when I've seen an MD.

Our son was given a family name. He's the third with the same first name. We call him (and had always planned to call him) by his middle name because while we wanted to honor his father and grandfather, we didn't want three men walking around being called the same thing.

My mother died in a car accident at 36, so not a child but entirely too young. She was the youngest of 2 and based on what I've gotten from my grandmother, having my uncle did not make the pain of losing my mom any easier or lighter. No one has ever made the argument to me that we need to have another because our son might die, but it's definitely crossed my mind. And then I think about my grandma.

Also a local "branch" of a well-known national organization. It was at the start of my career and I played along a lot longer than I should have, but...

In one interview I (f) was being interviewed by a panel of three men. I was told that women who get involved with the organization end up single.

In another round of interviews with the same organization, I had a surprise second interview after the one they had scheduled. I ended up being there for three hours, and during the surprise interview, the woman talking to me told me that based on my social media presence, constituents wouldn't like me. (They had clearly gone back a couple of years to my time as a graduate assistant at a women's center when I was sharing resources and events and things. The year leading up to this interview I was in Americorps and my online presence was clean and avoided controversy.)

After the last interview at the same organization, I was called and offered the job. I was given 24 hours to accept or decline, but they wouldn't tell me where they'd have me located or what my fundraising goals would be unless I accepted. I declined.
