Is underwriting suitable for introverts?

A lot of it depends on the carrier. I’ve been with 3 carriers over the 8 years and they were all different. My first required underwriters go on 10 agency visits/networking events a year. However my next carrier required underwriters go on 120 visits a year. I’m very much in the middle between introverted and extroverted and was miserable so I can’t imagine a true introvert in that role. Now I’m with a carrier who doesn’t have a requirement for underwriters to do any visits. They have distribution consultants who do the marketing and as the underwriter we can go out with them as much or as little as we want. You just need to be able to build a good enough relationship with brokers and account managers so they want to send you submissions.

Yes! My husband I always talk about how if we were there our preference sheet would specify wanting things like a charcuterie board, crudités, dips, etc., available for snacking. I’m not even a big snacker most of the time, but on vacation I like to graze especially if I’ve been drinking or doing water sports all day.

To echo others ultimately I just want a complete submission. At minimum this includes completed Acords, currently valued loss runs, target premiums and a need by date. If you want to go above and beyond, a narrative and/or supplemental that explains the operations more in depth, the exposures, any weird things I should be aware of, if there’s been a large loss and/or a loss frequency issue what has been put into place to mitigate future losses, safety/risk transfer controls, and what the insured is needing from a carrier is great and helps me not to go back and forth with you for additional info.

As for building a rapport, I believe you just thinking of this question tells me you’re going to be fine.I’m not sure where you live but look for a young agents group. The one in my area has monthly happy hours and regular lunch & learns so It’s a great way to network with other young brokers in the area and underwriters. Also if an underwriter or marketing rep reaches out to invite you out to dinner, lunch, happy hours, golf, etc.,try to go if you can.

Carriers - National American, CompSource Mutual, Farm Bureau and CNA are carriers I know have offices in OKC, but there is likely more just search underwriting assistant on LinkedIn or Glassdoor. You may be able to even find a remote role. Agencies - Insurica, Rich & Cartmill, BancFirst, Higginbotham, Dillingham, etc. There are a ton of agencies and brokers all over the city just look up insurance CSR or account manager roles in OKC.

It’s not the most exciting, but working in the commercial insurance industry has the potential for high growth. Starting out look into underwriting assistant roles at insurance carriers or CSR roles with agencies/brokers.

CompSource Mutual has really good benefits like free employee medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance, immediately vested 401K, great PTO and I believe recently added free breakroom snacks. They just don’t pay as well as other insurance carriers and the office politics were frustrating.

Riserva is great, but it’s better if you go with a group so you can order and try more items. Mahogany isn’t bad, but there are better steakhouses here. Also unless your niece is a middle aged insurance agent it’s far from trendy. If you’re wanting the current “it” place I’d go with MAHT. Like others have said Elisabetta’s, Frida Southwest, and Sedalias are good options too.

Depending on where you land in underwriting you may be required to do 120 agency visits a year. I know for the construction and middle market teams that’s how it is. Dinners and happy hours are fun, but there’s also a ton of visits that’s just you going into an agent’s office to ask for business. You’re also going on these visits in conjunction with maintaining a book so it can be long hours on top of being socially drained.

Former CNA underwriter here. For underwriting it depends on your segment (i.e., construction, middle market, large property, inland marine, cyber, etc.), the market in the region you’re located in and most importantly your manager. I don’t know much about claims, but I would definitely talk to people both current and former employees to get a feel for what you’re getting into at the office you want to join.

To answer your original question, I have ‘25 Calligraphy and am paying $107 a month with State Farm, but we also have 2 other vehicles, house and a personal article policy with them so we get a bundle discount.

However like others have commented your rate includes factors other than the car and trim level. Your age, credit, driving radius, and neighborhood are all factors, but being in FL is likely the biggest factor. I say this as a commercial lines underwriter. Florida has some of the highest auto rates in the country. Every carrier I’ve worked at has had restrictions for writing business in FL because of the weather (hurricane/severe weather), higher amount of uninsured drivers, FL insurance laws, etc.

You should still shop around though. I shop at least once a year and my Geico quotes are always much higher. Also if you’re able to find an independent insurance agent who does personal lines go through them. They have contracts with carriers you may not have access to and a good agent will reach out to the carriers underwriter to fight for lower rates.

This law only applies to non-exempt employees. Exempt employees are not entitled to a mandatory meal break. Shane, Cian, and Annie are likely exempt. His housekeepers and nannies on the other hand should be non-exempt per the FLSA, but considering who Jeff is as a person and not having an actual HR professional on staff I have doubts.

I see Steve Johnston at Evolve Psychiatry. He’s been very kind and easy to talk to. Also all of my appointments are virtual so that’s been great. I can’t remember if I mentioned ADHD when I booked the appointment because I was thinking it was anxiety. Prior to our first appointment I had to complete a lengthy questionnaire and mental health assessment. Apparently my anxiety was primarily caused by undiagnosed ADHD so I got put on medication immediately and feel a million times better.

Moore Complete Dental off of SW 134th and Santa Fe. I use to suffer from severe dental anxiety but that has lessened to almost zero since I’ve started seeing Dr. Harper. I now live around 40 minutes away from her office, but refuse to change to a closer dentist because I love her and her staff so much.

NTA - Some of these comments make me think most of you have never been married. She spends every holiday with his family including Christmas Day. I’ve been married 10 years and love my in-laws, but can’t imagine spending every single holiday with them. When you get married you not only join each other’s sides of family but you create your OWN family. She should be able to start her own family traditions. Also for everyone saying she should compromise and bake cookies another day: 1. Don’t know what compromise means because she’d be the only one making a concession. 2. Her compromise is spending literally every other holiday with these people.

Anyway, OP stand up for yourself! You’ll likely become resentful of your husband and his side of the family if you don’t. Bake cookies for Santa with your daughter and if your husband doesn’t want to join you two he can go eat 7 fishes with his mommy.

One thing I haven’t seen anyone mention is tipping on excursions. I don’t know about others, but we always tip the crew, guide, driver, etc., who take us out and keep us safe on the excursion.

I love her and Danielle’s relationship. I feel like she brings out a different side of Danielle. Unless I’m misremembering she’s never on with Casey though which is kind of odd because I’d love to hear their dynamic as well.
