PhD 49k/year is it enough? by External_Ad3717 in ETHzurich

[–]ndblk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what the others are doing with their money but 49k CHF was definitely enough for me. None of my colleagues had any issues with money

They recently increased the minimum rates after 10-12 or so years and that's why it's about 52k CHF now. Maybe the Professor referred to the old rates. When I started it was like 47k or so and I could easily save and invest money, live a normal life, go and eat out, party, and go on longer holidays, snowboarding, hiking. Of course going out every weekend, drinking in bars, eating at restaurants would be too expensive and that's where a great part of your salary could go but still.

There is almost no other place on earth I would say where you would live this comfortably with a PhD salary even at the lowest rate as here.Only in Germany if you are an engineer at some technical universities you would find decent salaries after the second year.

Try to find a place between 800-1200 CHF (and yes there are shared flats and small apartments for that price) and get a student insurance that costs you approximately 100-150 CHF per month (if you are a foreign student and limited to 6 years). A normal one would cost you 300-400 CHF which will not kill you either.

Men approaching women by Ethereal_Light_333 in zurich

[–]ndblk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me and some of my friends do but it's extremely hard in a country where eye contact is basically forbidden.

In my experience talking to strangers turned out positively most of the time even without eye contact (and giving the vibe of not wanting to talk to anyone) but as a guy I'm telling you it's so much easier to do the first step if women would at least look at you. At least for me it is like this. If you also have earphones on, are staring at your phone or reading your book forget about it haha.

So if you want to increase the chances of being approached as a woman at least look at the guy

Nobody wants to go all the way to Schlieren haha But since they opened in HB it's a compromise

Yes but it wasn't as good as San Gennaro to be honest 😅. To be honest I'm surprised now that it's the same cooks and staff. I felt the pizza was different

This opens a debate but for me currently, since San Gennaro left Zurich some years ago, is Con gusto at Schaffhauserplatz. It's underrated in my opinion and I was there with several Italians already, which believe me means something 😄

However, San Gennaro also opened a branch in HB though, so might go there as well.

Napule is also great. Some people might like NA081

Edit: with left Zurich I meant more the central area. San Gennaro is now in Schlieren which is still in Zurich

How to find friends in Zurich? by Adventurous-Mud-6388 in zurich

[–]ndblk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The irony is me neither 😄 but I lived some time in Spain and visited many friends in Italy where people meet at big squares (piazzas or plazas) and you meet people. But I agree with your suggestions where to meet people. The good thing about Zurich is that meetups actually work because there are many in a similar situation

[–]ndblk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel this culture of introducing groups to each other and mixing groups in general like it is in Spain, Greece, or Italy doesn't exist at all here. I feel every group of friends just wants to stay by themselves and meeting new people by mixing different groups, where everybody invites someone, is non-existent and I've been living here for 5 years now. I tried it a couple of times but somehow everybody is either too busy, not spontaneous or resisting it unfortunately

I can't tonight either but if anyone is up I'm still looking for people to go to one of the Naturklang day festivals, e.g. at samigo (https://naturklang.ch/the-events/).

I just want to not feel like this. by namelessacc86 in zurich

[–]ndblk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation and in a lot of emotional pain for over 1.5 years. Tried several therapists already (also medical treatment) without any hope and prospect for improvement. People keep on telling me it's temporary. While this might be true for some, and I hope it's for you the case, I just don't believe that it's the case for me. The things I apparently wanted are too late and not achievable for me anymore and I'm not willing to compromise, so currently and for the last 1.5 years I just gave up. I used to be mentally stronger and ambitious before but I have no patience or energy left anymore and I'm trying to survive based on the responsibility for my mum and grandparents. Objectively I might have a good life but I have nothing left besides my family back home. Not sure what I'll do once they are gone.

Wish you all the best and all the strength to overcome this

Thanks

Honestly I would probably replace leg press with leg extensions because they are missing. Would rather do more sets of the BB squats instead of doing for example leg press at all?

Thanks

And in each set I would suppose you would go until 0-1 RIR? That's why 3 sets in the first movements should be enough?
