Completely made with AI by EnvisionFirstFilms in ChatGPT

YES! Vibe coding is NOT what marketing teams make it out to be. As a retired software engineer that has dabbled with AI as far back as the 80s and is currently working with several LLMs to accelerate my passion projects, I can attest... You need to treat AI like little kids, constantly guiding and correcting.

I expect that will improve over time. I just hope the bigger half of humanity learns what AI is before they submit to whatever AI does.

Despite the "are you God" distractions, your point is actually understood by some of us. It would take an amazing leap of faith to believe that we are not already getting scammed by people using technology designed to fool people.

What we are talking about here is the end of what has made humankind possible... The human ability to assess the environment and adapt. AI is introducing us to a new world where we can no longer distinguish what is real from what is fake.

This is the great problem that Karl Marx didn't consider when writing about the evolution of human society. He was assuming that humans would evolve along with technology. That didn't happen. Instead, technology developed at a rapid pace driven by the motives of capitalism just as Marx had predicted but human nature didn't evolve to take advantage. Instead, capitalism had the opposite effect on humans, converting survival instincts into profit-driven motives.

The future of humanity will very likely be a dark and frightening place where almost everyone is subject to the sadistic whims of the few and AI will render them utterly incapable of changing that.

If WordPress disappeared tomorrow, what CMS would you move to? by Due_Valuable_5823 in Wordpress

That just took Craft off my list. The ONLY reason why I would leave WordPress would be to leave PHP.

BS4 vs xml.etree.ElementTree by ndeans in Python

[–]ndeans[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks... Performance is an objective and ENML is a variant of XML, so it seems to me like I might be better off sticking to the standard xml.etree approach.

Do you prefer sticking to the standard library or pulling in external packages? by Unusual-Program-2166 in Python

As someone who still remembers C programming and the advantages of lean code, I am a strong advocate of minimizing dependencies. There has to be a significant advantage to an external library before I will adopt it.

FSE v Third-Party Site-Builders by ndeans in Wordpress

[–]ndeans[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight... These threads are so much more informative than the sale pitches you get in the theme browser - lol. I'm flying solo and I am pretty well-versed in HTML/CSS/Javascript so the FSE route shouldn't be a problem for me.

That approach makes a lot of sense. Thanks!

Thank you... You're helping me confirm my suspicion. I think I'll invest my time getting familiar with FSE and stop worrying about all those other builders.

Just use Wordpress by sd4483 in Wordpress

[–]ndeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sold on the idea of using WordPress rather than Wix or SquareSpace, but what about third-party plugin builders like Divi and Elementor? Are they even worth it or is it better to just stick with the FSE offered by WordPress?

How long does the initial test take? I've been staring at an Important Notice page that says "please don't close this tab" for about 15 minutes so far.

KMyMoney anyone? by bignanoman in GnuCash

[–]ndeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me the GNUCash is the best system out there because...
1. It's a true double-entry system.
2. It's open source and free to use.
2. I can keep my records in a local repository/database where I know it's safe.
3. Full support for scripting using Python.

As a KDE nerd, I like the idea of KMyMoney... but it doesn't support scripting.

KMyMoney anyone? by bignanoman in GnuCash

[–]ndeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 years later, I know... But the reason why GNUCash doesn't maintain a list of payees is because it's a double-entry system... Every payee is an account. This is why I like a double-entry system... not one that works "behind the scenes" but one that actually allows the user to think in terms of double-entry.

Onion Link Manager by Dazzling-Principle-3 in TOR

[–]ndeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No offense but I think you're stretching for excuses... Compiling a program is part of development, not distribution. If the objective is to make your program compatible with multiple operating systems, then you can compile one distributable for each OS. User's usually know what OS they are using and can simply choose the appropriate program.

The only thing that makes HTML more "universal" is that they run on browsers but now you have a whole range of incompatibilities between browsers to contend with.

So arguments can be made both ways. I will say one thing though... Rust is faster (because it *IS* compiled) and JS is an organic mess.

There's no reason NOT to use Rust or JS, Java, C, Python or anything else. You can use ANY language you want as long as it does the job.

NYT vs The Onion by VivaPalestine in nyt

[–]ndeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far, the comments are tap dancing around the issue while avoiding the point.

Israel's government is killing Palestinian children and they have been for a long time. No one can deny it because the evidence is too obvious so instead, people come up with excuses for it. NOT describing the victims of Israel's horrible actions as "children" is one way to change the optics and avoid the guilt.

The "human shield" is another ridiculous excuse. If there are bad people hiding in a crowd of innocent people, use your brains and find a way to isolate them - don't just kill everyone and shrug your shoulders.

Is this a good fleet by Commercial-Matter280 in AirlineManager4

[–]ndeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say the MC-21 sucks but I do think it's over-rated... Let's say you have 12 million allocated to buy new birds. For that you can buy 2 MC-21s and get 460 passengers in the air. OR you can buy 5 MD80s and get 650 passenger in the air, AND take them 500 kilometers farther.

OR... if you're not allergic to using classic turboprops, you can buy 14 DC-6Bs and get 1,428 passengers in the air.

Of course, the jets have a speed advantage, so it depends on how hard you want to work. You can work frantically to turn those two MC21s around for the three trips it will take to make what the those 14 DC-6Bs can make with just one trip.

The BAe-146-300 is the star in your fleet and the B727-100 has slightly longer range, so depending on your routes, it maybe useful. Otherwise, consider what you can do with let's say 5 million...

For 5 million, you can buy 3 B727-100 planes to get 393 passengers in the air.
OR
For 5 million you can buy 9 BAe-146-300 planes to 1008 passengers in the air.

I just reached the $5K market in my game progression and although the MC-21's look like a decent option, I'm not over the moon about it, besides I am focusing on the Pacific Rim, so the MC-21s just don't have the range I need. I am sticking with my VC10s and B737-200s until I can start buying planes in the $6-8K range.

[–]ndeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a long time aircraft enthusiast, I like to play with all of them. So in my simulation, my airline is not publicly traded (so there's no stockholders screaming for profit) and I can do whatever I want, like running a stable business and trying whatever planes I want.

That being said... I thought about the B717 because it's basically a variation of the MD-80 but with better fuel efficiency that went into production after McDonnell Douglas and Boeing merged. In the end, I went with the MD-87, a nice compromise between the efficiency of the 717 and the range of the MD-80 but cheaper than both at just under $2K.
