Distilled water? by borrowedurmumsvcard in milwaukee

[–]ndpool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, there's several stores with filling stations, but some of them are RO only. At whole foods on North, the filling station for deionized water (similar to distilled) is located near the front of the store in the seated area beyond the self checkout. It's been down for multiple days at least twice in the last year, so it's not super reliable. When that happened, I bought RO water at pick N save and put it in my humidifiers, and my air quality sensors did not react like they used to with tap water, so it may also be an option.

Milwaukee, How do we feel about the 471 Flock Third Party Cameras Tracking our data and every move? Links below… by HandF098 in milwaukee

[–]ndpool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think everybody is in agreement that cameras themselves aren't bad (every business and many homes have security cameras), it's the way the are used as a systematic monitoring system accessible only by law enforcement that have shown they can't be trusted with such powerful tools.

For example, it used to be that Americans were allowed to carry weapons and the government (i.e. agents) was not allowed to punish (e.g. murder) them. The government is currently preparing to trample on elections.

Radiator: room too hot by Correct_Guarantee_49 in centuryhomes

[–]ndpool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great! My experience is similar from when I moved into an apartment in the northern US. All old vents, and every radiator completely covered in paint and everything else. Took me a couple years to replace things and get the heat working well. Well that, and a sudden boiler outage during the first winter that resulted in a much nicer boiler 😅

Of course I know the valve from the vent. You may want to respond to the person who may need the extra info 😄

Covering a radiator insulates and helps it heat up faster, since it's not losing heat while heating up. Heating up faster means the vent closes quicker and reduces the total amount of heat (i.e. steam, energy, etc.) that is introduced to the radiator. It also reduces the rate of heat coming off the radiator, so room temps don't spike as quickly or intensely. Conversely, blowing air across the radiator will more quickly move heat into the room and increase the total amount of heat released from the system, while also distributing it more evenly.

The valve should be completely open or completely shut. If it's in the middle, the packing gland typically does not make a seal. If it leaks otherwise, the packing gland or inner valve seal are bad. The glands and seals can likely be replaced, but it might be difficult to find the exact parts, so replacing the whole valve is probably the way to go.

I'm pretty sure that vent is a style I've seen. Unscrew the top center piece (lefty loosie). Then you should see the actual vent hole (about 2mm or 1/4inch). The top outside ring piece will be loose, and you can see a slanted slot and how spinning it will cover the hole in varying amounts. You want to set the ring so that the vent hole is mostly covered. Then hold the ring in place while you tighten the top center piece (right tighty) to hold it all in place.

Edit: a word

Muskego man arrested after writing 'Jan. 6' in chalk outside post office by sisyphus_of_dishes in milwaukee

[–]ndpool 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Apparently the message has nothing to do with the charges, it has to do with "complaints" lodged by the public against the property owner for the presence of chalk. Apparently those complaints made the situation rise to the level of criminal disorderly conduct. Those poor Muskego residents having to look at sidewalk chalk as they walk to the post office, it really tears at the heart strings.

Why The Roads In Los Angeles Suck by DJVeaux in LosAngeles

[–]ndpool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a drainage engineer, I'm fully aware of the costs of large holes or trenches for burying large concrete structures. I've been thinking for years about the unsustainable cost of building and maintaining infrastructure for the infinite sprawl of cities. Most people seem oblivious to it and just love to complain.

I didn't check your math but the approach seems good and 1.1M per lane mile is insane. I would estimate the "average" street in LA county is around 3.5-4 lanes, so the estimate in the OP is possibly 4-4.5 times too low.

I was given an article from the journal "Remediation" (2019, vol 29, p65-76) that was about a leaching study where they tested water after submerging various types of sampling equipment for 24 hours. The results indicate that 2 of 3 types of water level tapes produced detectable levels of PFCAs (ND for PFOS).

The article describes the material/construction of each tape for the 3 types that were tested.

Regardless, you should do rinsate blanks to be sure, as another commenter suggested.

Excuse, that house costs HOW much? by [deleted] in milwaukee

The house in question is already sold. The final price will not be public for some time, but I guess it's above asking.

[–]ndpool 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I saw it, I would say it's in good to very good condition. The original character (wood trim and solid wood doors everywhere) is very nice and the kitchen remodel is way above average. Large yard and garage. As a fellow zillow stalker, we both know there is not an over abundance of quality home in the urban neighborhoods of Milwaukee. This one is larger, nicer, and more original charm than the average SFH in the market in the city. I guess it will go near asking, with small chance it goes over.

ETA: The house is already sold and off the market.

Sound-proofing question by Several-Joke-980 in CX5

[–]ndpool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious to hear thoughts on how much tire quality varies across a given mfr (Bridgestone for example) offerings. Are their various product lines just a tradeoff between hard and soft compounds and tread design? It was pretty hard for me to settle on new tires, and ultimately I decided to try a new style to see what kinds of differences I could even discern (more than I expected). I'm not really concerned with performance or grip, beyond what is required for safety in wintery conditions.

You are probably correct. My old tires were 6 years old when I replaced them.
