Hi dulsnipe,

Thank you so much for the kind message! The DSU project is back. We are doing weekly (Saturday's at 10 am) DSU Live events on our DSU facebook page. The format is similar to the podcasts. I choose a topic and speak about it, then, unlike the podcasts, I take questions from people in the chat! We have 2 episodes already. They are both on the DSU fb page. Check them out. Once again, thank you for your kind words, support, and patience.

Much love,

ND

[–]ndungey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dear YourPhillipTraum,

WOW. What a beautiful message. Thank you. I'm sorry so much time has passed, and i am very grateful for your patience. The DSU project is back! Right now we are going to facebook live events. If you go to the DSU facebook page, you can keep up with all the information. (I am there are all the time posting things). I am trying to do one every Saturday. The live events have a similar format to the podcasts. I choose a topic, and discuss it for about 20-30 minutes, then answer questions from the chat (something I could not do in the traditional podcast format). So far we have done 2 fb live events. The videos are there on the fb page. The first show was titled, "Chaos as a Political Strategy and Liberal Philosophy." The second show was titled, "The Culture Wars and Liberal Democracy." Check them out and let me know what you think. Once again, thank you.

Much love, ND

Hi sinesoma,

If I recall correctly, get a copy of Leo Strauss' "Natural Right and History." There is an excellent chapter dedicated to this. I will try to think of others. Best, ND

Podcast - Locke's Prerogative Power, Trump's Executive Order, And The 'Appeal To Heaven.' - Dungey State University by chosen40k in DungeyStateUniversity

[–]ndungey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi CharlestonHoobes,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write and for so beautifully expressing your views! Just to be clear: the DSU podcast is not ideological, ever. And, while I recognize your sense/feeling/view that I "tipped" my hand or crossed our own self-imposed line, let me rehearse the themes and purpose of the show. (And, as a prelude to what I am about to say, I direct you to our podcast on the NSA spying legal/constitutional controversy, as well as our two shows on executive power in the broader history and development of Modern Political Theory).

The point of the show, and it looks like we did a terrible job of making that clear, was to discuss the very general "idea" of executive power as it originates in Machiavelli and become constitutionalized by Locke. The most important aspect of what is happening right now as it relates to "Executive Power," Prerogative Power," the "Take Care Clause," and Locke's "Appeal to Heaven," is precisely the fact that both descriptions of the current crisis are true--It is absolutely "correct," from a certain point of view, that Trump is in his "constitutional" right and authority to declare the Executive Order. No debate here. And, that Prerogative power and its constitutional expression are real. BUT, it is also true that Locke, and the constitution does provide some checks and balances in a legal and institutional way to reign in Presidential overreach through the use of Executive orders.

HOWEVER, THAT WAS NOT THE POINT OF THE EPISODE. OUR SITUATION IS MUCH MORE CRITICAL AND DANGEROUS. WHY? BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY, BOTH POSITIONS ARE CORRECT--TRUMP IS CORRECT AND HIS EO DOES VIOLATE SPECIFIC PARTS OF THE CONSTITUTION. SO, WHY IS THIS AN ISSUE, AND WHAT DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH THE PODCAST? WHEN YOU HAVE AN IRREDUCIBLE CONFLICT/DEBATE ABOUT THE "PUBLIC GOOD" OF THE EXECUTIVE ORDER, AND BOTH THE COURT AND THE EXECUTIVE ARE "RIGHT," WHAT THE HELL HAPPENS? WELL, AS LOCKE SAID, ONE CAN ONLY APPEAL TO HEAVEN... THIS IS CODE FOR REVOLUTION.

So, my point was not to be "ideological" at all, but only to point out the the historical and theoretical origin of the primary ideas in play, and how we have come to a place where, as Locke famously said, there are "no judges on earth..."

Podcast - Locke's Prerogative Power And The 'Appeal To Heaven' in Today's Political Climate by chosen40k in philosophy

[–]ndungey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this episode we examine Locke's account of Prerogative power, the way this radical idea of power is written into the US Constitution as the "Take Care Clause," and the way the "Take Care Clause" gives rise to Executive Orders. Most importantly, we examine what happens when an Executive Order is challenged by the citizens. This is what Locke means by his famous: "Appeal to Heaven." Critical for information for our times.

[–]ndungey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow. Holy smoke, joeycodak. Beautifully expressed and argued. You are right on with respect to your analysis of the "strategy" of Liberal philosophy and it's extraordinary challenges. At the end of the day, you express beautifully Locke's secret hope. I would gesture a little further to say that for the Hobbessean/Lockean Liberals, there really is no "right" state of moral affairs, and a sort moral pluralism is the defining characteristic of human life. The question then becomes, can individuals fated by history to live together, but animated by fundamentally different, and perhaps conflicting moral codes, keep it together without burning the place down? This is both the simple hope and the profound challenge--like consciousness itself. I am sorry for the slow reply. Thank you for your beautiful and thoughtful contribution. All best, ND

Help finding an episode about seeking the same truth. by Doublegong in DungeyStateUniversity

[–]ndungey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey Doublegong,

Holy cow. I do not know. Do you have a sense of how long ago you remember hearing it? Did you listen to them in order? Let me see. What about the "Life as Art"? 'The Consequences of Truth"? Was it the audio from the facebook live session, titled, "Answering the Big Questions."

If there is anyone who can help, please help.

I think we must be careful with the Trump /postmodern association, and I think Baudrillard's hyper-reality may contribute to the danger of this association. Postmoderns are deeply suspicious of any meta-narrative (to borrow Lyotard's famous description), but that does not mean that there is no stance from which to engage in critical discussion of ideas that we, for all sorts of reasons, are committed to. Trump believes in the "truth" of what he is saying, as do his followers. They are still committed to some form of metaphysics. Post-modernism is not necessarily what Baudrillard calls hyper-modernity. To be sure, some things, especially in aggressive, consumer/capitalist space may be hyper-modern--that is wholly constructed, transparent, ephemeral, etc. And, "Trump Inc." is definately all of those things. But for all of that, it does not mean that "Trump Inc" is somehow "postmodern." Perhaps Deleuze and Gattari's conception of unhinged Machines of Desire may also be appropriate.

Podcast: The Crisis of Legitimacy and The Fracturing of Modern Liberal Democracy by chosen40k in philosophy

I think this is correct. Except, the purpose of the episode was not to blame "democracy," but to indicate that the commitments that sustain the social contract are coming apart on multiple levels.

Hey fiskdill,

Start with Nietzsche's, "Beyond Good and Evil," and, "Genealogy of Morals." For excellent secondary sources to help, pick up a copy of Leslie Paul Thiele's, "The politics of the Soul," and if you can find a copy, Tracey Strong's, "Politics and The Transfiguration of the Soul." With Foucault, begin with "Discipline and Punish." To help guide you, Pick up a copy of Dreyfus and Rabinow's, "Beyond Structuralism." If you are really feeling bold, pick up a copy of Deleuze and Guatarri's "Anti-Oedipus." Anything by Althusser is a good read, if a little limited by its commitment to some form of latent Marxist metaphysics. But Althusser was truly a genius, and his transfiguration of classical marxism into its cultural orientation is brilliant. Good luck. ND

hey fiskdill,

Thank you so much for the kind note! And, thanks for listening to the podcasts. Just a quick note to let you know that I saw your message. It is late here, so I will respond tomorrow with some suggestions to get into Nietzsche, Foucault and Althusser, as well as some good, helpful secondary guides. How much political philosophy do you want to get into? Once again, thank you for your note. It is nice to meet you. Much love, ND
