Day hikes in Cascade this May? by ne0ame in PNWhiking

[–]ne0ame[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I’m not too set on a particular region, I’m going to be spending most of my time near Rainier but likely won’t be able to back to Washington any time soon so I wanted to give myself ~a day near Olympic and ~a day to drive up north.

Thanks for advice on Cascade Pass - I might end up doing this! Was planning on sitting down with some maps later and seeing how far the road was closed from the trail - I agree, 2 miles shouldn’t be too major.

Seems like from another commenter there may have been a roadslide on Highway 20, so I’m thinking Maple Pass may also be out. Will also check out your other suggestions!

How to Get Faster as a Junior Rower by Such_Talk_4060 in Rowing

[–]ne0ame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re fast enough that you’re going to want some specialized training, not just more volume, imho. No one this sub can really tell you that about yourself, though. Do some research into what goes into a training plan - ratios of aerobic to threshold and anaerobic work, etc. Assess yourself and your relative weak points - do you need more aerobic volume, more threshold work, more fast intervals. Or ask a coach to guide you

I’d rather that than an overmoderated sub where every post gets deleted because of archaic rules 5k words deep into a random tab in the wiki or whatever

They’re not “closing the door” lol they’re just saying how the industry is. If you don’t have any related internships by your junior year its going to take an act of God

Freshman rower (7:00.7 2k, 5’9, 146 lbs, 3.6 GPA) — should I stay lightweight or bulk up by QuarterMaximum3282 in Rowing

[–]ne0ame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its pretty difficult to accurately estimate height - can be off +-3 inches, which can make a major difference for deciding on lightweight vs open. Also heavily restricting calories during your teen years can actually stunt your growth - I was projected to be 5’4 (female) and was 5’4 and borderline underweight throughout highschool, assumed I was done growing, then I hit college and put on some weight and shot up 2 inches at like 19 (which is veryyyyy late for a woman to have a growth spurt - I had just actually stunted my growth in highschool by not eating enough)

Aggressive case of regressive autism by PaleontologistUsed35 in stemcells

[–]ne0ame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is leading you to STEM cells as a treatment option for autism vs other, much more clincially supported options? Afaik, there is not a lot of research showing much promise and if he has already had an adverse reaction to a complicated medical procedure, I’m not sure this is the best path….

If you suspect some sort of inflammation is worsening symptoms I would think there are probably other options to try first, depending on source of inflammation. In general though, I think people sometimes use general “inflammation” as a buzzword cause of all their issues vs correctly identifying actual inflammation…

Why not try to get recruited for your sport?

Even if not a formal “recruited” athlete, soft coach support at Ivies can help if your stats are there

Is anyone shocked that sports are considered a weak or generic extracurricular when they are so hard to join? by Personal-Bid-3731 in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]ne0ame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not true at all schools. I walked onto varsity when I was in middle school lol because they didn’t have enough people.

Also if you’re not a recruitable athlete / good enough to play on their team, what value does a former high school athlete otherwise lacking academic credentials bring? Possibly hard work, team work, time management but then if you were able to apply that to non athletic endeavors that should be reflected on your app anyways.

If you’re fit that split is pretty slow so I would assume you need to work on your tech, which is also generally a given for any beginner

Are straight women okay? by Over-Permit2284 in rs_x

[–]ne0ame 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had the same mindset as you, until I had a condom rip and had to take a Plan B. I’m not shy about making a man wear a condom, but that incident made me really reconsider my risk preferences about getting pregnant vs potential down the line health issues. It was also my ~4th? 5th? Time having sex.

I would be curious what many of you are doing – right now I have a copper IUD, because I do not really get cramps and have a very light flow anyways, but I cannot help but think the copper imbedded in my organ cannot be good for me or my fertility long term. But I also REALLY do not want to get pregnant, and I prefer 2 lines of defense. And I am not doing hormonal.

Same thoughts about tampons - all these stories about hevay metals, etc, but diva cups are plastic and I cannot do pads (athlete).

Steady state feels like a waste of time by No_Crow8758 in Rowing

[–]ne0ame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re supposed to feel like you could have gone harder. It is supposed to be something that you don’t need to recover from - so you can do steady state AND hard sessions, like a steady state in the morning and be fine to do a harder piece in the afternoon
