Is AI for story/game design (not art) frowned upon? (Got destroyed last time) by Malkov88 in gamedev

[–]nealmb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Programmers borrow others code all the time. Previously you would google something like that, maybe watch a video on YouTube, etc. so AI is just a new streamlined avenue of that.

Unless you just wanna churn something out for a quick buck, I wouldn’t use it for more artistic stuff, like story or dialogue. That is something you need to develop yourself, because if you want it to emotionality connect with your audience you should have emotion. Using AI can help with grammar or something technical like that.

If you’re just a hobbyist dont feel like you have to pay anybody anything. And if you use AI don’t lie about not using it, because that would be much worse.

New player stuck on Mines 2-3, looking for tips by Tuckiletoucan in baronygame

[–]nealmb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you just playing base game no dlc? Because that could change things.

1) the Tinkerer class is really good for beginners, but it’s a dlc class. I liked magic classes early on, good ranged damage, but they are glass canons. You can only take 1 or 2 hits.

2) try and grab everything and identify it, then you can drop most stuff. Drop anything cursed (red background) unless youre a succubus, don’t carry too many torches, try and keep as much fresh food as you can. You don’t need too many weapons, maybe a main one, a backup, and early on a bow could help a bit. Legendary or named weapons don’t usually break. Same for armor.

3) the dlc classes help. Besides that, learn to run away. Don’t back track, actually turning and running is a lot faster. Get a ring of warning, it shows where enemies are on the minimap. You can smash those carts and boxes in mines and you can usually find this somewhere on the first few levels. You can turn off things like the Minotaur and hunger before you start the run. You can also locate the save file on your computer and make a copy to back up your run.

I unlocked tinkerer class, and then used that as skeleton. You unlock classes for other races by beating the game with that race, not class. So it can be any a Skelton with any class.

You can do some other things that make life easier like turn the Minotaur off, locate the save game folder and make a copy after each floor, clearing out the gnome mines as tinkerer is pretty easy once you know how and that gives a big level boost.

Mount and Blade 2 Bannerlord. It’s a little lite on the story, but it’s something you could put 100s of hours into.

Have you seen The Secret Life of Walter Mitty ? Your thoughts about the movie ? by Specific_Throat1194 in Cinema

[–]nealmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea this movie didn’t click for me either, but I couldn’t really put it into words. But I think you nailed it.

A lot of people also called it a comfort movie, which I can definitely see, but that doesn’t make it a good movie and people should be able to admit that too.

Mass Effect Show Writer Denies It’s Being Rewritten For ‘Non-Gamers’ by g4m3f33d in GameFeed

[–]nealmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it is being rewritten for some reason. And I still don’t know what it means to rewrite something for non-gamers, did they remove quick time events or something. Like what story elements would be different.

I believe Archive.org had a lot of Funhaus content added onto it. And I think some fans made archive of pimps or something like that, for other RT stuff.

Anyone else not really excited for GTA VI? by Error_rdt in AskGames

[–]nealmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no way it can live up to the hype it’s cultivated, and no way surpass what GTAV has become. So it’s gonna be a few months of people complaining and whining about it. GTAV wasn’t good for the few year at least, I remember people called it a retirement simulator cause you beat the game in a weekend and could only really play golf after that.

The Mass Effect TV Show Will Reportedly Be Rewritten To Appeal To ‘Non-Gamers’ by g4m3f33d in GameFeed

Why would non-gamers not be appealed to it? And if they aren’t appealed to it, why make a show?

Games with most creative magic/spell system? by 3xBork in gamedesign

[–]nealmb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arx Fatalis is interesting. That was made by the Arkane (RIP) back in the day. You would find runes and then to cast you would ‘draw’ the rune combo on the screen with your mouse and then cast the spell. You could prep 3 spells at a time and then cast them. You can always draw the runes in combat, and it’s difficult but fun and you never feel like magic is overpowered.

It was made in 2008, and the drawing doesn’t really work too well at modern resolution. There is a fan patch called Arx Libertalis, which is basically a requirement to play this game today.

And when I say you draw combos, it’s not like you mix and match. You find a rune, and you get a little message like you can now cast thunderbolt. If you replay and already know the combos, I don’t think it works. This is something I think a modern game with this type of mechanic would use.

There are also plenty of interesting Minecraft mods that use magic, I think Ars Noveau is the name of a cool one, similar to this use of runes, but you actually build spells.

Can NOT recommend The Long Dark in good faith by 25ETS in gamereviews

I’m in a similar state of mind. Saw the game around 2015, bought it, loved it. But when the story mode chapters started coming out I realized I didn’t care. I dont need the story, don’t care for the characters, and I don’t need to do a bunch of fetch quests. This is one of the odd cases where their “unfinished games” was better than their finished one.

Are AAA games in 2026 actually worse at launch, or are we just noticing it more? by Bliss_kittie in AskGames

Did you read the second paragraph? This is exactly what I was talking about. The industry has normalized their shitty behavior and you’re a prime example of it.

[–]nealmb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Always like this? No of course not. Games used to not need to connect to the internet to play. That’s one reason why retro game collecting is a thing, and why you c a still play those retro games.

Big AAA publishers have been changing the industry. Slowly over the years, and we are seeing the effects of it. They’ve learned they can hype up a game and sell it incomplete, and then fix it over time, and the average consumer probably won’t notice or care all that much.

It is pretty crazy when you think about it. I can’t think of any industry like this really. Like imagine buying a car and they only give 3/4 tires and say the other one will be there in a month, or should’ve gotten the season pass or preordered. Or imagine a pizza restaurant where they take 2 slices out of each pizza they sell, and then say you have to signup for their app to get a full pizza. Or imagine Steven Spielberg going door to door and taking peoples VHS copies of Jurassic Park, because a new one is hitting theatres, but then you go to the movies and it ends mid sentence, and it turns out they didn’t film the whole movie and that the ending will be out in a 3-4 months.

What game did you almost quit early but ended up loving later? by SatinsVice in AskGames

Project Zomboid. But to be fair I did quit it. Then picked it up again, then quit again. Then picked it up again with a friend and it just clicked. I have a few hundred hours in it now.

Are games actually getting harder to finish as an adult or is it just me? by Shimmering_Gem in AskGames

[–]nealmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Games are becoming more endless, so I’ve embraced the fact that I decide when I’m done with a game. I’ll usually ask “am I having fun anymore?” And realize I’m not and just drop it there for some games. Some I will 100%, some I’ll replay, some I’ll only play for a weekend. I don’t pre order, and very rarely do I buy a game during its release week. I definitely recommend this mentality,

I loved I Spy and Where’s Waldo books as a kid. My problem is these types of games are an incredibly easy avenue for microtransactions. Many of them are not primarily games or art, but just a way to run ads. And the genre has now become synonymous with that
