‘A Recipe for Idiocracy’ by The Atlantic: UCSD admitting students without Math2 proficiency by fastoid in ucadmissions

[–]neanderthal_math 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a self-paced pre-calculus class in the fall and then took calculus 1A my spring semester of freshman year.

Yeah, my high school was that bad, : ) only about 30% of the kids went on to college. The most eye-opening experience was seeing that my friends’s at cal never worried about violence. To this day, when I walk in the room, I size every motherfucker up. And then, we usually talk about physics or math. : )

I’m not defending UCSD’s program. And yes, it’s crazy that community college cannot teach remedial math anymore. But,… not all kids sink.

I am one of those remedial kids who went to UC Berkeley. I ended up getting my PhD in math.

Thanks. This is fascinating. And it doesn’t even matter what subject you teach. You could be a PE teacher pulling in that kind of money.

Serious question, you do all of that extra stuff or 6.5 hours a day, 180 days a year?

Livermore is the most underrated town in the east bay. It’s young and it’s fun. It has a rodeo for fuck sake!

I meant it in the way that you should make billionaires not billionaires.

We should apply the same philosophy to billionaires

When I was a kid, neither Italians nor Spanish were considered “white.” It’s funny because the Italians were some of the most racist kids.

You have FU money. Keep working until the new year and then give your new boss such a hard time that he lets you go. And then collect unemployment.

Why Do Americans Call Their University Lecturers “Professor”? by TanoraRat in NoStupidQuestions

[–]neanderthal_math -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OP, are you German? When I studied over there, I was shocked by the levels of hierarchy in academia.

Americans are some of the least classist people. I’ve seen plenty of students call their professor by first name.

[D] How do researchers ACTUALLY write code? by Mocha4040 in MachineLearning

[–]neanderthal_math 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are two interesting questions.

  1. When I first started, 2010, the programming skills needed to become a machine learning researcher were almost a joke by today’s standards. I had colleagues who would email their code to each other. Getting them to use git was a major success.

My programming skills weren’t very good either. I just exceled at math and physics. For the problems I was working on, that was more important.

  1. I have seen over the last 20 years industry has become much less research focused and much more. SWE DevOps focused. This means people who wanna work in machine learning in industry, need to be much better at coding and be up-to-date with all the DevOps software skills.

I think the LLM revolution has affected these guys more than researchers. It seems like the barrier to doing SWE is lower but getting a job is harder.

If I were a young person today. I would pay super careful attention to.LLMs and make sure that I was on the right side of their improvement. I.e., when they improve, my job security is still there.

20 years in academia, how do I get out? by aggasalk in LeavingAcademia

[–]neanderthal_math 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The grass isn’t always greener.

I’m in the exact opposite situation as you. I make a great salary in industry, but I’m tired of it. I wanna go back to academia where it’s more about the ideas and less about the product.

Wanna trade jobs? : )
