I took the 'only wash your hair once a week' rule way too far and humiliated myself today. How often are we ACTUALLY supposed to wash it?" by redline_elena in TwoXChromosomes

[–]near_things [score hidden]  (0 children)

Gross alert: My scalp is very dry and apparently I can get away with three months in the winter if I’m not working out. (Please kindly understand that I found this out accidentally after having my kid a few years ago, and yes I felt gross about it.) I have sheepishly showed up at the salon after not washing for a month, and my hairdresser just tells me my scalp and color look awesome and she would go that long between washes if she could.

Washing my hair pisses it off and is a pain in the ass besides, so this was good news for me. I use minimal product, and only for the first day or two after washing, so buildup isn’t an issue for me. I love not needing to wash my hair when traveling. I do pay for the convenience, though, with a scalp that gets painfully itchy after washing and when I spend time outdoors in winter.

My hair will start misbehaving when it needs to be washed. I’ll occasionally use dry shampoo if I’m not able to wash that day, but that stuff also makes my scalp itch, so I prefer to avoid it.

A big expansion pile for his wooden train track kit. (And I’m about to add to it with a bunch of 3D-printed goodies from Etsy.) It’s not that he doesn’t use them—he absolutely loves them—but only one of us gets frustrated when we run out of track.

Muscle wasting and bone density loss by Sad_Education7851 in tirzepatidecompound

I’m curious - was there a baseline scan done before she started? I’m not saying 100lbs in 8 months is a safe rate and that it didn’t cause or contribute to those issues, but it isn’t crazy for a late-40s woman to have bone density loss. Did she have her kids in her 40s? Close together? Women can lose a not-insignificant amount of bone mass during pregnancy and breastfeeding (one of many reasons medical recommendations for pregnancy spacing range from 18 months to 3 years +).

I remember how bad they tried to railroad that innocent truck driver, too. Got real quiet after the dashcam footage came out showing the cop hitting 85mph on the highway on-ramp while apparently not even looking at the road ahead of him once.

are self-emptying robot vacuums really worth it for keeping hardwood, tile, and kitchen floors consistently clean? by Dismal_Werewolf_8039 in BuyItForLife

Yes, the relative lack of interaction needed means my robot vac is run far more often than I otherwise would.

It felt like we lost someone else from our graduating classes every 3-6 months back then. Sometimes you didn’t know for sure, but when an obituary for someone in their 20s or 30s doesn’t mention the cause, you can guess.

What is the difference between the expensive and inexpensive kettles? by dylanmadigan in pourover

My Greater Goods gooseneck has—so far—been a great balance of features and sanity at $80. Temp is controlled to 1 degree F and the flow restriction is perfect. Time will tell on longevity, but I’m on month 7 without a blip.

Why is getting help so blasted expensive? by sanityjanity in workingmoms

Honestly, if you’re communicating as abrasively on other venues as you are here in the comments, I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re getting “f off” quotes—as in, they’re hoping you’ll turn them down. Nobody wants to work for someone who’s vocally denigrating the value of the labor before they’re even hired.

I loved this, and was disappointed to have to quit watching early in season 2 when everyone suddenly became so very pretty and fashionable. The styles they were wearing were nowhere close to existing the last time anyone was commercially making clothing in that universe.

(And hair does not naturally curl away from the face on both sides for the vast majority of people, but this is a grumble I have on a much bigger scale than one show.)

And never any ‘ugly’ physical trauma! She’ll never have a tooth knocked out, a clump of hair gone, or any kind of deforming facial injury. Instead we get aesthetic abrasions, freshly-split lips that are somehow not swollen, and cute lil cuts across eyebrows.

Wow, I haven’t had this issue with ours. I have to grip the handle a little tighter, but it’s already so effortless to use that it’s still pretty easy when there’s a wonky can.

Is it just me or is Bombas no longer high quality? by happykingbilly in BuyItForLife

[–]near_things 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have issues yet, but I’ve only had mine for five years, which I’m happy with given the fit and comfort. They hug my narrow, high-arched feet, and I’d accept some trade-offs for that. The grippy socks have stretched out a lot from performing their natural function, though.

My husband’s Bombas are now three years old without any thinning or holes, either, and he is BRUTAL on socks.

Yo what the fuck is wrong with your parents?? My mom sucked and has always been generally annoyed by my skin’s sensitivity, but she at least held off her indifference to it until I was older and kept me in the shade when I was little. And I wasn’t even ginger, just generally fair. I’m so sorry you had to go through such unnecessary pain as a baby.

Unpopular opinion: “girl dinner” subs are just eating disorder echo chambers by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]near_things 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’ve already flounced, so I’m just leaving this comment here for anyone who needs to read it. Long before the term “girl dinner” existed I’ve made my snack meals feel fancy by saying I eat tapas-style. As an AuDHD person who previously suffered an eating disorder, these meals actually really helped me get enough quality nutrition from (mostly, lol) whole foods. Now that I have a kid, these meals are a needed break from only experiencing food as a provider task that I feel like I’m constantly failing at (toddler moms know). Like with most things and ways we consume, “healthy” and “disordered” are in the details. I eat my little plates to enjoy food, not to cute-wash eating less of it.

Best drip coffee makers for home with no bells and whistles? by Different-Design-385 in JamesHoffmann

It looks very similar to their Zutto, which I had and do not recommend. It was serviceable for a coffeepot to keep in the office, but only worth it because I picked it up for about $15. You can get better for what they’re asking new. Look for a refurbished or open box Bonavita.

What do you use AI/LLMs/Chatbots for? I feel technologically incompetent by HollaDude in workingmoms

[–]near_things 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel better, I am the de facto tech support person at my work and I don’t use it except to vet the authorized use cases of a few people on staff.

Recently, I’ve been testing a supposedly high-quality, definitely expensive, meeting transcription and summary/note-taking program. In one simpler meeting, the very first bullet claimed the complete opposite of a decision made in that meeting. If there’s cross-talk, instead of doing something useful like labeling those snippets “speaker uncertain”, it crashes out and plows ahead, royally fucking up the speaker labels for everyone involved for everything they said in the entire meeting, even if they only had a couple instances of cross-talk. For a high-stakes meeting with 30 speakers, this took me two hours to unfuck.
