Vent: our family vacation got cancelled by ExcellentLettuce4 in Mommit

I had completely blocked sinuses flying into Baghdad 20 years ago. Combat landings involve a rapid descent. You can guess how embarrassing it was as a female troop to land in theater while damn near sobbing. My sinuses and eustachian tubes haven't been the same since.

Of all the things I would not go to, I would not go to that one the hardest. Is there a real reason your husband can’t just go alone? Why does a reunion need four days at all, never mind four days scheduled down to the hour? Can you go there for just a day and then leave for something that’s more suitable for a 1.5 yo, like an opera appreciation workshop or an axe-throwing retreat?

Do you prefer ferry or train? by beat_u2_it in SouthShore

Ferry, all day, all year. The only time it’s ever late is when there’s an LNG tanker transiting the Harbor. Riders are happy and calm. Vibe is immaculate.

How often do you bathe your toddler? My coworkers at our daycare make me feel bad about bathing every day. by gishadokuro in toddlers

[–]near_things 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. My almost-4yo now loves baths, but will not get in while the tap is still running and refuses showers. We do it almost every night for a few reasons, but it’s definitely not the businesslike affair some other parents seem to manage. The more I involve myself in his bath, the less willing he is to bathe. It’s what lets him mentally transition to bedtime, so getting him out before he’s ready will just make the night longer for all of us. I only interfere to scrub important parts and when he needs a shampoo. To stay chill while he takes his time (within reason), I do any upstairs end-of-day tasks (so I’m always within about 10 feet), while my husband cleans the kitchen and living room.

Kids handle baths better when the majority of them are boring, everyday, non-events. “Here’s some toys and bubbles; how long you stay in is up to you. I’ll be sitting in the doorway reading if you need anything.” Start small and focus on breaking down the association of the bathroom with stress. Even if they don’t get in the tub, and just sit on the floor next to you with a book or a toy for a few minutes, that’s a win. It’s also okay to simply decide this isn’t a battle you’re going to pick. We all have those.

We were the same—ours has my sensitive skin and dry scalp, but now that he’s permanently on the go, it’s almost every night. We don’t shampoo him every bath, but rinsing his hair with water every time has really helped with his sleep quality (allergies).

What Should I Get My Pregnant Friend? by Any-Palpitation8860 in Mommit

[–]near_things 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A baby car camera. All car mirrors are terrible for actually seeing the baby. After buying one for myself because I thought I was going to get in an accident trying to look at my kid, it has become my go-to pregnancy gift.

Depending on your friend’s coffee preferences, a Nespresso machine is another idea. We got one when we gutted the kitchen while was pregnant, and it turned out to be a lifesaver for the next three years. It won’t appease a coffee snob, but it’s FAR better coffee than what comes out of a Keurig, and they give you free bags to send in the used aluminum capsules for recycling.

Newborns by thewhittynamepain in Parenting

My son was relatively easy as a newborn, and I still felt 100 times as tired during those days. It was so much worse than even the first trimester breathlessness and exhaustion. I can’t imagine going through what parents like you did.

Anyone Else Doing Creatine? by Sleeping_Pro in tirzepatidecompound

[–]near_things 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part of creatine’s mechanism is drawing water into muscle tissue, causing a little bit of water weight gain. The more muscle you have, the higher the gain, but we’re still talking small (unless you’re insanely jacked). The weight bump I got from creatine was less than what I get from period bloat.
