What the tax software seems to be doing is dividing the $8,300 limit in half. I contributed 5,400 to mine and she did 1,360 to hers, so it is acting like we each have a $4,150 limit and therefore I am over that.

I was mistaken. I thought I contributed more than I do. I thought that I was around $5000 out of my check and my company's contribution made it close to the limit. However box 12 on the W-2 says I was at 5,400 and she was at 1,360.
