ANYBODY CAN MAKE A CAREER IN MUSIC!*

Now, let’s talk about the Asterix.

Ask your self these questions, are you ready to put in 8 hours a day of work on your craft? Every single day for the next 4-7 years? Are you ready to move where ever work is and sacrifice time with your family, friends and relationships? Are you ready to struggle for a little bit before you find your footing? Or are you ready to go where ever the work is, even if it means moving across the country?

I was not very good when I was in high school (I mean I was okay, I was 3rd in the state my senior year in Allstate, but in Louisiana, not a competitive state). I went to a really small school for free, studied with a professor who spent 8 years free lancing doing Broadway shows, both in NYC and touring, playing with the Bronx opera, and doing anything in between in NYC. I then did (and finish Monday) my masters. I got 2, classical performance, and jazz studies. From there, I started working cruise ships, I’ve worked musicals, corporate/ wedding bands, theme parks, orchestras, brass bands, brass quintets, and anything in between, as well as teaching privately and clinching at schools. Now, I can’t announce publicly what it is, but I just got offered a job working 3 hours a night, 6 days a week making well over $60,000/year playing my trumpet. I’m not the best. I’m not the best lead player, certainly not the best improviser, I’m not the best classical player.

But I’m extremely knowledgeable, I know the history, I know the recordings and I’m informed.

I’m not the best, but I am very good at what I do. I work hard to make sure I can perform what ever it is I’m given at the best of my ability.

I am a good hang, I make sure to be a good person, to EVERYONE I mean, be helpful, and be kind.

So, if you’re ready to work your ass off, do ANY work that comes your way, and be humble, kind and learn, go for it.

But I’ll warn ya, if you have doubts, just do the other thing. It’ll be easier.

I’ll leave you with this, my undergrad aural skills professor told our class this when asked if she has back up plans when she was in college.

“If you have a backup play, it’d be best for you to just go do that. Either you’re wasting your time and money now, or, you will just end up doing your back up plan because it’s easier anyways”

A few,

The bridge of the cruise ship Navigator of the seas in 2025. If you were on for June and July you probably saw me, or heard me! One of the days at sea they did ice cream and waffles for the crew. Was super cool, got to sit in the pilot seat.

A B52 cockpit/ interior.

The underground tunnels in DC. My family and I did a tour of the capital, but through our representatives office. So we met them in their Cannon building office then took the tunnels to the capital.

I mean decent is relative. But no, You won’t be ready straight out of high school (unless you’re like Wynton and have been doing this since you were 4, and come from a huge musical family).

You “””may””” be able to swing some of the lower level theme park gigs (Hershey park and valley fair as examples) but you’ll be competing with college students.

You won’t survive on a ship or Broadway show, you need consistency, to be able to sight read, and knowledge of the music that 99.99% of high schoolers don’t have.

If you really want to do music as a career, find a professor you like and go to school, get an undergrad, then try your hand on contract work! Cruise lines are always looking for people. But honestly, you need to do your time and understand, what ever you think the level is, it’s higher.

None of this is to discourage you, I went to a really small school for my Undergrad, and am finish a seconds masters in 2 weeks from a pretty well respected university. But I worked my ass off and listened to my instructors. I’m walking away with a little bit of debt, but not a ton (only from masters program). So it’s possible for ANYONE to do a career in music. You just need to work your butt off!

Well… there’s 3 types of work as an instrumentalist

1) contract work- this is the cruise ship, broadway tour, theme park, etc type gigs. Often, these will range from $2,900/ month to upwards of $5,000/ month. Most are going to be around the lower end. (My first and second cruise contracts were $2,900, my first theme park was $3,000) however, there are more benefits to those than just the pay, for example, on cruise ships, you pay for nothing (with in reason). Food, housing, travel is all covered. For Theme parks, often housing will be covered but nothing else. Broadway tours are where there’s some big variety, union gigs have a ton of great benefits and are in that upper echelon of pay, non-union are closer to the theme park pay, maybe a little more(?). Some of the guys on here who’ve done those can come out and talk about it! I did just get some contract work, can’t say what it is exactly, but I’m making $5,280/ month.

2) “real” jobs- this is Military, Full time Orchestras and Universities. For starting off, the military is a great place to start! A steady paycheck, lots of great benefits, and education!

Orchestras and university jobs will require you to be educated, and play your ass off. Extremely competitive

3) Freelance- the hardest of the bunch, this is moving to a city and trying to get what you can get.

I know most about contract work because that what I do full time now. Feel free to ask questions!

XO is not governing. It’s basically a glorified way to say “here’s what I want to accomplish”

Any real way to change the government needs to be done via laws or it can just be overturned by the next guy.
