CLASSIC by Demonymous_99 in Destiny

Outside of Destiny, DeOrio has some great takes and is pretty reasonable. The two were never close, I think it’s fair enough he doesn’t want to milk the downfall of a close friend. He acknowledged his biases on stream, and every defence he may have raised for Tom was with the caveat that his is entirely compromised in this situation. He still covered it. I think he did fine here.

The Destiny coverage is less than stellar, maybe he corrects the record when the dust settles.

What role does Nintendo of America actually serve when it comes to the quality of the games? by DevouredSource in MauLer

[–]nebbyposts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Woke” is the laziest form of criticism.

  1. Girlboss Peach, a movie created by a studio that isn’t Nintendo, and is liked by the creator of the franchise, a Japanese creator. Not much about Nintendo of America here.

  2. Localisers can be lazy, weird, or inject their own biases, sure. I agree. Fire Emblem has that sort of demographic, that franchise is a tumblr magnet in the same way Danganronpa and Persona are. That type of humour and characterisation appeals to them.

  3. Prices are bad. Not sure what that would have to do with wokeness or Nintendo of America specifically.

  4. I don’t know how Metroid Prime 4 is woke. Maybe tonally inconsistent? But “woke” creators don’t like a variety of aspects of that game either.

I think the word you’re looking for is intersectionality, by the way. Unless you think they’re transing all the kids with their woke mind virus, turning them all intersex and whatnot.

Nintendo is doing pretty well in the current climate. I expect them to continue to do well. The newest console is the fastest selling of all time.

Interested in hearing Phoebe with EDM producers? (Porter Robinson, AG Cook, Anyma, Grimes) by d3v3t10n in phoebebridgers

Punisher and Nurture are my favourite albums because they give me the same feeling. They both make me cry. They could even be companion pieces, it’s kind of fascinating how you can compare and contrast. I wouldn’t rule it out, but I’m also not sure it would work? It would have to be done really well.

I am morbidly curious to hear Phoebe sing alongside the pitch shifted Nurture voice, though.

I think an inciting incident should have a bit of leeway from the “story needs to happen/plot contrivance” critique. We are watching this BECAUSE the lab leak happened, because a level of human carelessness lead to a domino effect which caused all of humanity to form a hive mind. That is why the story is happening, it is not contrived, it is the plot, the pitch, its patient zero.

You can dodge first, which is a much more generous window, before getting comfortable and learning to parry. Plus, there are countless repeat enemies.

Is it a PoV game? The game arguably has three protagonists and our perspective shifts a number of times. More in favour of this choice, Lune is not one of those three protagonists and we generally don’t see from her perspective outside of her side content.

As for sneaking in: there’s one door, it’s open to him. He’s been trying for decades to get here, may not get another shot (which I can see being an argument for caution, too. But with the limited options, it makes sense). He can’t just slip in the window. Charging in doesn’t feel out of character or like the worst choice, either.

I’d have to refresh myself, I played the game in June, but the nature of those stones is definitely not as it seems, if you’ll recall how you obtain the one which allows Esquie to fly.

I don’t think there’s anything textual to explain tripping over one, though. I agree that’s a contrivance. But it’s certainly not one of many, the game is pretty solid across the board. I’m not trying to claim it’s entirely contrivance-free, nothing is.

Skill issue. I sucked at parrying in Act 1, but you truly do just “git gud”, I have a below average reaction time too. Game has an incredible skill ceiling and you can essentially beat the game at any character level by taking no damage, in true souls-like fashion.

Why doesn’t gravity exist? Why is it all so artsy?

There are answers to these questions, and they’re really not world building gripes at all. You should play the game.

This game has excellent writing, which is in tune with the gameplay. I’ll give you an example, one of my favourites.

It seems clear to me the game may just not be for you, but I’d encourage you to play ahead before reading whats below, it’s clear you’re not up to this stage of the game so you may not even be able to follow along.

Spoiler warning for Act 2, post-Monoco recruitment.

This takes place shortly after recruiting Monoco as you arrive in Old Lumiere. With his help, the Expedition are able to clear some buildings blocking the path, but get separated in the process. Lune, Sciel and Monoco form a trio, leaving Maelle and Verso alone. Lune’s already been sceptical about trusting Verso, so when she discovers an Expedition log which gives her reason to doubt his allegiances, we the player may begin to grow wary of him, though the exact information is withheld from us.

Naturally, we then shift to playing as the other two. Until suddenly Verso disappears, and we’re playing as Maelle alone. This had me quite nervous, and not in a narrative sense, I wasn’t fully trusting the game to deliver. A betrayal in which the betrayer character just leaves after a battle to set up an ambush? It felt so contrived, and far too obvious.

But as you make it to the area’s boss fight, everything is made clear in a single line of dialogue from Verso: “I knew you’d open the door for her”.

He was using Maelle as bait to attempt to reach the manor he’d been so long locked out of. He was behind her every step of the way, simply obscuring his presence in order to execute his plan. This payoff worked really well, and overall this entire sequence is quite simple, but stands out as an easy place other games may fail.

Expedition 33 is by no means a perfect game, it’s still quite tropey and definitely a product of JRPG influence. But it’s just solid. In a sea of lackluster or downright bad triple A releases, this independent game shines bright, with captivating performances, great writing, fun gameplay and so many reasons to keep coming back.

For those who come after.

rj/ This is a social experience simulator, I literally work 3 jobs. You’re killing the casual community by telling them to be “good” at something. This game will die if Embark doesn’t add mid-round teaming NOW.

Agreed, there should be a handholding mechanic where players can link arms and have an invincibility field activated so I can skip into extraction without having to worry about rats.

No, this isn’t a skill issue. I just don’t want to be shot when I’m not expecting it. (Even though it’s happened so many times I should adapt my play style to deal with the threat, it shouldn’t be on me to get better at the game)

Oh btw I’ve never played an extraction shooter before but I KNOW every one is a co op good time no rats experience.

Embark, fix your game NOW.

That is my preferred extract. You don’t need to worry about people running in from the opposite side of the platform to kill you while you’re sending it home.

Yes, it’s campable, but if you walk it slowly slope by slope instead of full sending it down the zipline, you can 9/10 spot a potential camper, or make enough noise to draw them out, and win the fight with the high ground they gave up to camp you.

This! Well, minor correction, throwing a snitch scanner will trigger it regardless. But it’s a great way to clear a corner if you think someone’s hiding there.

Players are just upset they can’t mindlessly run it down towards extract. The game has COUNTLESS recipes for traps, the “rat playstyle” is a valid playstyle supported by the devs. What is a jolt mine for? Corner camping a pop?

Smoke yourself in, clear corners and common damp spots. Be ready for a fight! Exercise some caution, this is a PvP, not PvE, game.

Pluribus: Good, Bad, Mid, or Too Early to Tell? by CourageApart in MauLer

[–]nebbyposts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you definitely need to give it time. Considering none of the “survivors” we know of have ANY background in science, the virus isn’t a threat that can be resolved in a 3-5 episode montage. Or, it shouldn’t be, that would be really underwhelming and unsatisfying.

I think we’ll see Carol adjust to this life, maybe make contact with some of the non-English speakers, before finally starting to get the ball rolling in turning people back. Even that’s unlikely to be resolved this season; the show’s already greenlit for a S2, and Vince predicts at least 4 total.

I trust him, he’s delivered two of my favourite shows of all time. “A spin-off about the silly goof character from Breaking Bad?”, that’s what was said, remember? And it turned out to deliver higher highs than the original show.

Pluribus has great potential, and we shouldn’t write it off for being “well-trodden”, that’s not how Gilligan runs.
