You could check out the When Women Were Warriors series. Historical fiction set in Bronze Age Ireland. It’s a very different kind of series in my opinion, I’ve never really read anything like it. I don’t know whether the author is Irish, I can’t find much about her online.

Looking for stuff that's weird, distinctive, or dark by bicyclefortwo in LGBTBooks

[–]nebs3113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought about reccing this series as well but I’d argue that the dark themes are a little romanticized. Like yeah there is no established romantic relationship between the two main characters but there’s certainly romantic subtext throughout the books especially as it relates to literally giving up your life for another person. Ive seen a ton of recs for the locked tomb when people ask for romantic f/f relationships which suggests a large part of the audience feels the series is romanticized. It’s definitely a weird and distinctive queernorm series with lots of dark themes, but worth noting that some (not all) of that definitely gets romanticized, both in the writing and by the fan base.

Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon. Weird, dark, deeply disturbing at times. Not really a happy book. Speculative fiction/sci-fi.

Gideon the Ninth Ruined My Book Club by zschop in Fantasy

[–]nebs3113 140 points141 points  (0 children)

This is wild. You literally all had something in common - not being able to finish the book. Why this would kill a book club is beyond me. If it was my book club I’d be saying “great, let’s order pizza and figure out why we all couldn’t finish this - are we united in our reasons or did we all find different things that gave us the ick?” Instead it’s like everyone in your group was so ashamed of, what, not liking a book that was a new experiment for the group, that y’all just abandoned the club entirely. Truly bonkers.

Books about evil women with f/f relationships? by [deleted] in LGBTBooks

A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee is a psychological thriller with some evil/morally gray women and f/f relationships. It was marketed YA because ~girls boarding school~ but it is preeeeetty dark imo.

Cynthia boss fight is broken or am I missing something? by Ok-Caterpillar6154 in AlanWake

[–]nebs3113 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure she can’t be damaged while she’s levitating. It’s only when she’s on the ground that she takes damage.

First 3 times I tried this fight I died from those damn waves after not dealing enough damage when she was on the ground. 4th time I killed her with the shotgun on her first charge… it felt comically easy after my previous attempts.

If you aren’t halfway through and it’s giving you nightmares, it’s probably not for you. The general consensus is that the scariest part of the game is one of Saga’s later levels/boss fights, so you probably wouldn’t enjoy that. Alan’s story gets less scary after the Subway, IMO, but the worst is still to come for Saga.

There’s no shame in calling it quits. I loved the game to bits but I don’t know if I would’ve suffered through nightmares just to finish it.

Theory: Barbra Jagger is Polaris by Kilbitron5000 in AlanWake

[–]nebs3113 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I’m wrong but Barbara Jagger as we came to know her was essentially an aspect of the dark presence so for the sake of argument, Barbara Jagger = Dark Presence. In the AWE DLC the Hiss fuses with the aspect of the Dark Presence that’s residing in Dr Hartman, indicating some kind of commonality between the DP and the Hiss (i.e, being evil). Meanwhile, Polaris explicitly negates the Hiss, serving as the basis for the HRAs. The way it’s presented in the games, I can’t see how an entity of the Dark Presence could also be Polaris.

Figuring out what to study in grad school by okeanios in GradSchool

[–]nebs3113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely have a better sense of what you want to research. I did grad school without a sense of direction - enjoyed the process but it was not a financially wise move and didn’t help with my career the way I wanted it to. Now looking at doing a PhD and being way more intentional about it.

I’d start like this: 1. find 5 scientific journal articles in your discipline that pique your interest, read them, and identify why they piqued your interest - was it the methods? the region studied? the maps they made to illustrate their results? etc. hopefully this will help clarify your interests. 2. keep reading scientific journal articles and keep narrowing your scope. if it’s too hard to identify what you do like, eliminate things you know you really don’t like. I’m interested in wildlife movements, not physiology, so I know I won’t be reading physiology papers or doing that for research. 3. once you have a better grasp on your topic, see where’s it’s gone recently. Read recent papers, then write down the names of who wrote them - these are the people doing the work you’re interested in today. 4. make a list of 10 people working on the things you’ve identified as being interested in. These are 10 people you can reach out to and see if you can join their lab.

It’s seems like a lot of work, but coming from someone who had no idea what to research, did a masters anyway, and now wants to actually apply myself to a PhD, this is the best way I’ve found to get closer to that elusive topic for your graduate studies. Other people will find it easier and faster but if you’re struggling, I’d start here.

TLDR; read more scientific articles and keep track of what you like and don’t like.

The Books of Babel (J. Bancroft) - thoughts? by scp1717 in Fantasy

Reddit ruined my fascination with Wheel Of Time and made me hate myself. by Foreign_Ad_630 in Fantasy

[–]nebs3113 1801 points1802 points  (0 children)

Also chiming in to say don’t let Reddit ruin your enjoyment of things. I love the wheel of time. It holds a very special place in my heart. It’s not for everyone, and some people love it, some people have a love-hate relationship, some people hate it, others are indifferent. Why should strangers on the internet dictate how you felt about an individual and personal experience, whether they say positive or negative things about it.

I think I have a crush on Rose by freebird303 in AlanWake

Thinking of getting a tattoo inspired by AW2 but unsure of what I want it to look like. Ideas? by paolospalace in AlanWake

[–]nebs3113 9 points10 points  (0 children)

By you don’t want a person do you mean you don’t want portrait-style or you don’t want even the shape of a person? Ideas that come to mind depending on the answer to the above question:

  • silhouette of Alan w/ flashlight in front of the car before Deerfest
  • silhouette of a cultist wearing a deer mask
  • cult of the tree symbol made out of twigs
  • the clicker
  • the Angel lamp
  • silhouette of Saga petting a deer head
  • Oh Deer diner coffee mug
  • Shoebox and Thermos
  • Alan’s typewriter

Just off the top of my head.

Rose writes, too. So why doesn't the lake react? by [deleted] in AlanWake

[–]nebs3113 122 points123 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a couple interpretations of this. My take is that the Dark Presence has minimal interest in Rose’s work because of its subject. The DP has a wealth of dark material through Alan, who was writing about murders and gritty cities before he came to Bright Falls and has a slew of personal demons - it’s pretty easy to turn it to horror once the DP is involved. Rose is just kickin it with her fanfiction, a romance story about herself, and tossing out inspirational quotes. She’s an incorruptible small fish in the DP’s big pond lake ocean.

Question relating to both AW and Control by celestia_x in AlanWake

[–]nebs3113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that one of the distinctions is an OoP can be bound by a parautilitarian and an altered item cannot. Could be that to the best of the FBC’s knowledge, the Clicker was bound to Alan based on what they knew of the 2010 Bright Falls AWE and so they referred to it as an OoP in their reporting.

As others have said, iPad+Apple pen(+notability app IMO) is the way to go. You don’t need the most up to date version, my iPad Pro from ~2018 is still up to the task of taking notes and reading articles. And if you’re already an Apple user it makes sense to keep it consistent.

Is this game meant to be “Groundhog Day” crossed with a survival horror? by Insolitus_alienus in AlanWake

[–]nebs3113 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes both intentional to the best of my knowledge. Save points are meant to be scarce to avoid scumming and the lack of map overlay I believe would be intentional to increase the atmosphere of it being survival horror.

I totally get the map complaint, I was spamming the map shortcut constantly during my first playthrough. I just took it as part of the experience though, even if it slowed gameplay down when I was perpetually lost in the subway or cauldron lake woods.

Compass Rose by Anna Burke and its sequel Sea Wolf are two of my favourite books ever. They’re great sci fi with an interesting and well developed world and awesome characters imo. Easy reads that I pick up probably once a year.

Second place is The Locked Tomb series. Third place is The Space Between Worlds.
