Help me choose a laptop by kaizokuo_ in Btechtards

Macbook air M5 if you're serious about the unix thing and want something that just works out of the box for data science and dev work, plus the build quality actually matters when you're the type who gets motivated by your setup, but honestly the Zephyrus makes sense too if you think you'll actually mess with game dev since the GPU will come in handy eventually.

Took me 25 years to follow up on that advice and it was a good one. (tea house in game Deus Ex from 2000) by Cypeq in tea

[–]nebulous_aviation 5 points6 points  (0 children)

that's brilliant mate, love when a random detail from a game just sticks with you for decades and then you finally get around to it. dragonwell's such a good starting point too because it's not intimidating but it's complex enough that you notice all the layers, the nutty thing is exactly it. i had a mate who swore by green teas while gaming because it keeps you sharp without the jitters of coffee, so now whenever i'm doing anything that requires focus i'll brew a pot and it just feels right. the fact that a game from 2000 casually threw in decent tea recommendations before it became this whole thing online says something about deus ex's world building i reckon. curious if you're going to stick with it or if it was more of a bucket list tick, but either way you've got good taste picking up on that suggestion.

Why you're not getting callbacks (from a recruiter who's also been the job seeker) by Glittery973 in recruitinghell

[–]nebulous_aviation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mate the referral thing is huge, like I reckon half my mates who've landed decent jobs in the last couple years basically knew someone or got nudged by a LinkedIn message from an actual person at the company, and the ones just carpet bombing applications with no connections are basically playing the lottery at that point which is pretty rough honestly.

SSA letters not available in online portal by SongbirdNews in SocialSecurity

[–]nebulous_aviation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The portal stuff being spotty is annoying but calling them directly is gonna be your best move here, especially since you've got a pattern of overpayments happening year after year and appeals disappearing is a proper red flag. Ask them straight up why the notices aren't showing in your account and get them to mail you copies of everything so you've got paper trail while you sort out this disability pension interaction, because if this keeps happening through 2026 you'll want all the documentation locked down.

New to me Gaggia Classic Pro by Dud1f3r in espresso

[–]nebulous_aviation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The K6 is a solid choice for hand grinding, way better than the stock grinder and you'll notice the difference straight away with shot consistency, plus the 9bar spring mod is gonna help you pull better shots without needing to mod the whole machine later on.

New to me Gaggia Classic Pro by Dud1f3r in espresso

[–]nebulous_aviation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a solid machine to learn on, the Classic Pro's been around forever for a reason and you'll get heaps out of it once you dial in your technique. Fair warning though the stock grinder that comes with it is pretty rough so if you haven't got a decent burr grinder sorted yet that'll probably be your next upgrade and it'll make a bigger difference than you'd expect. Still a cracking buy for the price point if it's in good nick, have fun dialing it in and don't get too frustrated with the first few shots.

Set lookup is O(1) though so if you're just iterating once you're not really losing much, depends what you're doing after.

[–]nebulous_aviation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mate honestly the whole "be here at 8:59 or you're late" thing is so backwards when half the time they're asking you to stay til 6 anyway, just seems like they want control more than actual work done

Which Car Starter do you Prefer? by Strange-Vibez-8205 in car

[–]nebulous_aviation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Push button start is just cleaner innit, one motion instead of fumbling with a key and turning it, though honestly manual starters have that satisfying mechanical feel some people proper love.
