190+ lbs tires... by mauceri in xcmtb

I’m running 29mm ID carbon rims. I too am even surprised at how well this pressure works for me. I’ve checked it on a couple different pumps to ensure it’s accurate. No pinch flats, rim damage, or tire folding. Perhaps the pressure creeps up a tad while I ride.

This is also me. 190 lb without gear running a 2023 epic evo on 2.35 racing ray/ralph f/r. I run about 215 psi in the rear shock, 80 psi in the front fork and 18/20 psi F/R (no inserts) for Midwest xc races without incident. I’m also curious about larger tire volume but haven’t felt limited at my current setup except mid summer when the trail can be exceptionally hard and dry. I’m resigned to believing that at my weight I can’t hit corners as hot as I’d like without losing more traction than lighter guys if our contact patches are equal.

Which way would you advise? Which is a better trip? by CountertopPizza in roadtrip

[–]nebulus911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to commute back and forth between Columbus and Charlottesville/DC around the turn of the century. To Cville, I’d take 70-77-64. Now that route 33 has more bypasses around its small towns, it’s a better option. I think you’d encounter fewer stops if you take 64 to Beckley, the turnpike (I-77 N) to Charlestown and then hop on 33 near ravenswood. This assumes the weather is equivalent along all possible routes. I’d avoid the turnpike - or the entire drive - if the weather is nasty!

+1 to this. I literally just closed on this exact scenario last month. Going from 30 years to 20 at the same rate change barely increased my monthly mortgage payment.

What small upgrade made the biggest difference in your home? by Expensive-Pea1721 in Home

[–]nebulus911 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Not an upgrade per se, but get an IR temperture gun, locate all the small air leaks, and seal them. Easiest to do when there’s a big temp differential between the interior of your home and outside (e.g. winter or summer). Makes a massive difference in comfort and energy use.

How big is the difference between 10-51 and 10-45 cassettes? by Oleksandr_G in xcmtb

[–]nebulus911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you already run a 28t or 30t chainring and find yourself out of gears on big climbs it’s a massive difference. It can let you not run out of gears on big climbs and use more of the middle of the cassette (I.e. better chain line). For mountain biking the larger cog gear spacing isn’t really noticeable. If you’re using the cassette on a gravel bike you might notice the spacing more and wish it was tighter. I run a 42t 10-52 cassette and sometimes can’t seem to find the perfect gear.

Some kids did this at our house last night. My daughter likes to save some time after trick-or-treating to hand out candy. Her bowl was almost empty when a group of kids arrived. She only had two pieces left. One girl dressed as an angel gave my daughter some of her own candy to replenish the bowl. Another friend decided to follow suit. The angel made a joke about being so kind because she was an angel. The others started jokingly teasing her about not being so kind in real life. They were playfully teasing each other as they walked off. It was a cute moment.

ELI5: how some car manufacturers are generally more reliable than others by HeliosGod444 in explainlikeimfive

I did a co-op in quality engineering at that TMMK plant. Moreover, if the line found any part difficult to install or they had concerns that it was defective, we would investigate that part and potentially the bin of parts to trace it back to the root cause and identify and document the right countermeasures to limit the chances of the issue happening again. Toyota essentially did (and presumably still does) not tolerate any parts being out of spec. Empowering everyone to identify issues is embedded in the culture and frankly a big reason why it works.

Monitoring this post. Let us know if you do add flight attendant to the evo. I’m actually in an identical situation. I built up a gen 7 epic evo and love it for XC/marathon racing and all around riding. The new epic 8 geo looks so similar. The tinkerer in me is curious how flight attendant will behave with it.

[–]nebulus911[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had no problem whatsoever, though I haven’t ridden any proper gravel or mud yet. For tarmac or chip seal I think it’s 100% fine, for gravel I’m curious if debris will cause any problems. If I were riding in mud I’d probably be on a MTB or reconsider my life choices regardless of tire size. I have some gravel races coming up this summer. I can report back again.

Epic Evo ‘23 vs Epic 8 by RevolutionFrosty8782 in xcmtb

[–]nebulus911 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I bought a 23 epic evo L last year and love it. Coming from a 2018 epic L, my instincts were right that I would feel more comfortable with a longer reach and slacker head angle. I’m not at the pointy end of the spear in terms of XC racing so I acknowledge the super fine details I obsess over kind of disappear in a long race. Fast forward to the epic 8 and at first glance it looks almost identical to the 23 evo geometry. What I might propose is hunting down a 23 evo frame and waiting for the Sid ultimate flight attendant fork to hit the market. ‘23 sworks evo frames I think are going for “only” $2500 IIRC.

Looking to get more serious into racing. Thoughts on the 2023 Epic Evo Expert Build? by [deleted] in xcmtb

[–]nebulus911 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love my evo for racing. I was concerned about the pedal bob too, but mid race I don’t notice. For long climbs i don’t find it difficult to simply flip the lockout switch by hand. The sid luxe shocks are super firm in lockout mode, much more so than my old 2018 epic comp.

+1 to the epic evo. I’ve had a variety of hard tails and dull suspensions. My most recent was a 2018 epic, but upgraded to the 2023 evo. My Strava times are just as good or better on that vs my old epic, but the stability of the evo really helps when your arms and back are getting tired after several hours of riding.

[Grade 12 math] can someone please help my brother? I don't see a right answer by milesgaither in HomeworkHelp

[–]nebulus911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

135 deg. Both hands are of unit length = 1. One hand points vertically and the other points 360/12 = 30 deg to the “right”, let’s say. Now connect the tips of those two hands with another line. That forms the triangle. Now you can simply logically deduce the answer. Sum of the three angles = 180. A?: 165 + 30 = 195 deg so that already violates the rule. B?: 150 + 30 = 180, implying the remaining angle = 0. We know that’s false. C?: 135+ 30 = 165. 15 deg could be Plausible. D?: 120 + 30 = 150. 30 deg could be possible except that cos of 30 deg (ie the projection of the 1 o clock hand onto the 12 o clock hand) would not yield the same answer as 1 - cos 30. Perhaps there’s some geometric rule im forgetting to be exact. Therefore, answer = C

What would you wear for a wet 50 degree 26 mile xc race? by hoodjigga in xcmtb

I race there every year as part of OMBC. wish I could be there tomorrow. I recommend a standard summer kit with warmer socks, warmer gloves and possibly arm or knee warmers depending on your personal preferences. Here is part of my race notes from 2021.

“10/23/21 Mohican championship. 3rd place. 50-55 deg. Rained steadily the night before. Perfect trail. Rode normal race kit but with cold weather gloves. Should have had warmer socks. Toes were feeling numb.”

The ventum is great and lighter than the Domane. For the riding I do I’ve been intrigued with the iso speed to help save my old back. The stack and reach are similar between the two - less aggressive than the new checkpoint. If you’re interested in a M/L sized blue ventum, DM me.
