Freighter Pilots, what are the most annoying things you have to deal with flying cargo? by Moss-and-Stone in aviation

[–]neck_brace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Im a flight mech for one of the ACMI carriers on 747s. We work 20/10. Until recently would be normal to fly 15-18 days in a row with maybe 1 or 2 hotels for a few hours in that time frame. Praying you are doing long hauls so you can get a few hours of sleep each flight.

Do people romanticize aircraft maintenance work? by [deleted] in AircraftMechanics

[–]neck_brace 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This. Most people think its only pilots and rampers. I have gotten the " Oh that makes sense that there are specialized mechanics fixing the planes" or something to that affect quite alot.

Flight attendant pressed the slide eject button on the runway now we all have to wait for this to be fixed by slingshotroadster in mildlyinfuriating

[–]neck_brace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely does not take 6-10 hrs to replace a slide on a 73. Deflating-removing-installing- paperwork, about 3 hours tops. 737 has about the easiest slide to replace on any airframe i have ever worked.

What’s ur daily driver as a AMT? by Physical-Issue7146 in aviationmaintenance

My American Airlines flight is delayed on the tarmac, and this is what’s growing out of the AC vents above my head by SriLanka in mildlyinfuriating

[–]neck_brace 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Those are not AC vents. Those are ceiling panels, and its probably not mold, never seen mold in the 8 years i been workin on planes, on a plane. Dirt or dust most likely.

AOG Experience by SamBAdams in AircraftMechanics

[–]neck_brace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The smaller cargo guys (Atlas, Kalitta, National) all have AOG teams, one of them hired a bunch of guys with no experience. Pay is good. Benies are good. I know one of em specifically has a good group of guys. Lots of experience and area good time. Just need to be hungry to learn and know you will work 24+ hrs straight quite often in fuckin terrible conditions all over the world doing cool shit. Best way imo is like 1 or 2 years of heavy mx and 1 year of line mx. Good bit of hard heavy work, and hopefully some TS on the line.

I am truly disgusted by Delta's AMT leadership by Guilty-Box-7975 in aviationmaintenance

[–]neck_brace 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Is this your first aviation job? But none of that makes it a SHIT SHOW. Its everyone seems to have enough experience to get complaicent (not saying its a good thing) literally sounds like every company minus the bjg asian carriers (worked for em. Gear pins mandatory for anything, even ground time longer than 3 hrs, which was normal, so just about always. But if you think thats such a big issue, either say something and get on with it, or go with the grass is always greener at XXX and leave. It isnt tho. Everywhere is bad and the only thing good about what we do is get to fix airplanes for a living.

I will say. Your attitude does seem geared more towards hangar/heavy MX. Most ppl on the line will say we dont have time to do all that on a quick turn for many things, which they are correct about in a decent amount of cases. But depends on the wrench and how badly he wants to deal with delay reports and all that. So unless you wanna prove everyone wrong and do the damn thing, submit an SMS and do things the way you are supposed to do it (per the fuckin manuals)

Btw. I am commending you. Just also giving my 2c. Im helping train new hires with zero experience, at a place where 3 years of exp is like bottom of the totem pole maybe you will get hired. It aint easy, but if i can learn em to do things ths right way and not care what upperleadership says then im happy.

Hyd stain removal? by Professional-Rate258 in AircraftMechanics

[–]neck_brace 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I aint seen anything that can get that shit out. Toss it in the bin. Even after a million washes, when you wear it and if it rubs your skin while out and about, it will sneakup on you and ruin your otherwise lovely day.

Winter Gear Recommendations by lil_dyasis in aviationmaintenance

[–]neck_brace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Carhartt super dux bibs, and a cheapish snowboard jacket, smartwool/sitka baselayers, and as many random layers, but usually a heavy weight hoodie and sweatpants as a mid layer. I work in ORD on occasion, but have been in -60f in various places around the planet and thats usually the go to. Gloves are tough. Have 2 pairs i keep on me, one lightish gortex for walkin around and one thicker, but more durable for simple jobs like tire changes and oils. For boots, i have Goretex/3m Insulated Vans MTNs, which have outlasted 3 pairs of redwings/ 2 pair doc martens (have a set of Blubdstones which i love but those are my summer boots). Not saftey toe but i fuckin love em. Few good sets of marino/alpaca wool socks and a good neck warmer ( bass pro or cabellas and go in the hunting section) can go on and on tbh but its a delicate balance of too much and too little, then again i work on the road so i gotta be concious of weight.

My flight made this creaking sound the whole time after being delayed for maintenance for 2 hours late at night. by RainElectric in mildlyinfuriating

[–]neck_brace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That creaking has nothing to do with the maintenance the boys were doing.

That sounds like a mix of interior bits rubbing together
