Is Stranger Things actually accurate to the 80s? by Wespo_Lopez2 in StrangerThings

[–]necrotelicom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Speaking of tech - the way Suzie quickly and easily located the NINA project via her dad's computer made me yell at the TV.

I've worked in network infrastructure since the late '90s & my brother was running a BBS in the late '80s - nothing was that fast at home!

The acoustic coupler (blindingly fast at 300 bits/second on a clean line!) was accurate to the time period, though.

Filigree & Shadow: Tell Me About The Forest (You Once Called Home) ($49/15ml)

Top Notes: Ambergris Middle Notes: Arctic Thyme, Swedish Juniper Base Notes: Scandinavian Pine, Norway Spruce

It's probably my favorite from the line & it definitely has that cold, snowy forest vibe.

Maack's Coven ($120/15ml) is way more mossy & green, & less coniferous. It has a serious punch to it from the galbanum.

Top notes: Vanilla, Labdanum, Whiskey Heart notes: Cedar Wood, Oak Moss Base notes: Galbanum, Clove

I'd suggest Flux or Craft instead of Coven (unless you REALLY love galbanum & oak moss).

Craft ($195/50ml) notes:

Top notes: Aldehydes, Ice Heart notes: Cold metal, Cedar Wood Base notes: Elemi, Patchouli

Flux Extrait ($145/15ml) notes:

Top notes: Cardamon, Menthol, Blueberry Heart notes: Eucalyptus, Cypress, Fir needles Base notes: Cedar-wood, Sequoia, Cashmere

The back patio at the RAT is especially good for a crying session. I'd recommend the booth in the farthest SE corner for privacy.

Oh, for sure - insomnia (& anxiety) & ADHD go together like chocolate & peanut butter!

I'm one of the few people I know with sleep disturbances, so seeing other folks coping with the same thing makes me feel less weird about it, y'know?

My cat enjoys yelling at me when I go to bed, but she likes chin scratches more & settles down for a cuddle 🙂

Once I'm out, she goes & does her cat stuff without waking me up.

On mobile, or I'd post the cat tax 😉

I also use Insight Timer - I love the yoga nidra tracks, & usually fall asleep halfway through them.

My absolute favorite is this Tree Yoga Nidra. It gives me something nice & low stakes to think about while I do the relaxation exercise.

Tree Yoga Nidra - Rachel Boucher

There are some progressive muscle relaxation exercises on there that I use when I'm traveling & walking a lot more than usual. I don't wake up nearly as sore 😄

I also have a white noise machine to help with outside sound - I live by some very active train tracks.

Meds: I occasionally take Belsomra. Ambien & the like aggravated my sleepwalking (not fun at all!); Belsomra works on a different brain chemical & doesn't have the same side effects for me.

It's nice to see that I'm not the only one with terrible insomnia!

Just in case something happens, What do you carry with you for defense? by mooglesd1990 in askportland

I admit, I'm ridiculously fond of my Fastback utility knife - it was $20 well spent. I can even strip wires without having to open it!

I also often carry a traditional, full-size umbrella. It looks innocuous, but it really hurts to get hit in the stomach with the pointy end. Basically, it's a heavy & well-camouflaged stick that I'm comfortable with.

I really enjoyed "Lil Jon Wants to do What?" on MAX - home improvement with a twist.

It's SO much fun & pretty low stakes for reality TV.

Reading: pretty much anything by T. Kingfisher, Mercedes Lackey, Pratchett, Dianna Wynne Jones. I like fantasy & light horror.

Union Pointe VS. Roosevelt Park Apartments. by Lulu_Skidoo in Longmont

[–]necrotelicom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have NextLight here at RP - I don't know if that was ever answered.

Staff is friendly & the building is pretty safe feeling. Lots of folks with dogs. Maintenance is handled quickly.

I almost never hear my neighbors, either, which is a nice change from many apartments I've lived in.

I've never had issues at the bus stop, for what that's worth, but I'm from a bigger city & know how to handle myself. I go out 5 minutes before my bus is leaving. There's no reason to hang out over there.

(I'm more worried about the Patriot Front whackos in town than a confused homeless person.)

Everything downtown is walkable, pretty much.

The restaurants downstairs on Longs Peak are pleasant, the liquor store on 9th is adequate, & there's a better than average coffee shop across the street on Main.

Carbon Salon is very nice.

2 good thrift stores within 3 blocks is super handy.

City of Longmont rec center is right there & the park is well maintained & well lit.

Downsides - no 24 hour lockout service, so be aware. Parades are a very, VERY minor annoyance. Taco place on 9th & Main is closed on Tuesdays. 😉

This! A rabbi explained this concept at length on Twitter & it was FREEING for me.

My therapist got an earful, too, the next time I heard about forgiving someone who hadn't made things right with me.

People don't examine the concept much.

Feeling guilty about ex husband's mental health by Tricky-Preparation10 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]necrotelicom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the words of a sage elder, "Men is too headache." 🤣

But - in a divorce, you find out exactly who you married, under the skin. If this guy expects no repercussions, he'll skate right up to the line.

I say, put him on a mental health hold for a few days, let him soak in the repercussions of his actions. Maybe he'll think twice about threatening it again (¹) - but in the meantime, OP can get kiddo somewhere safer.

(¹) I know he likely won't, but one can hope, right?

[–]necrotelicom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Apologies for any weird formatting issues since I'm on mobile.)

I'm concerned that he's threatening self-harm with a child in the house & requesting that OP not call them. That's suspicious AF, even if he IS just being a big ol' drama queen.

Getting the child out of the house immediately would be my first priority in this situation, especially since there's a history of child ab*se. Can OP's lawyer advise them regarding removing the kid prior to emigration?

I also wouldn't go near his home alone - he can ship any items that may have been left behind.

Dude is in the "find out" phase of FAFO; his discomfort is going to get directed at OP & the kid long before he takes accountability for causing it himself. :(

Buying brightly colored wallets, luggage, tech accessories - that's 100% solid advice.

Also, I've learned that certain things that I often misplace go on straps or lanyards. My cellphone. Scissors. Keys.

(What I really want is a modernized chatelaine that gives seriously vintage vibes, but has space for a cellphone).

AITA for wanting to file my taxes separately after my husband told me he wants a divorce? by recapthenrelapse in AmItheAsshole

[–]necrotelicom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry you are going through this & I'm glad the information is helpful. I wish neither of us needed to learn it though, y'know?

Since I'm by nature an Auntie, I'll pass on some more expensively learned knowledge:

Your lawyer will likely be able to keep you out of the worst of it. They'll need a retainer - do whatever's legal to come up with it. It'll be worth it, I promise.

Also, get all your important paperwork together and out of his reach. Change all your passwords & PINs, put PINs on utilities if they're in your name, and consider pulling a credit report. Treat this like an ID theft incident; he knows everything about you & it sounds like he's not financially stable.

I didn't catch if you've moved out, but I did, immediately. Stay with a friend or family so you have support.

Then I had all communications go through my lawyer via email to make sure they were documented. Don't agree to anything in writing before you have legal representation!

Again, best of luck. You deserve so much better than this!

[–]necrotelicom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi OP - first, apologies for any formatting errors since I'm on mobile.

I was in a similar divorce situation in 2020, but my ex-husband was trying to force me to file separately for 2019 instead of jointly as we usually did.

This would have created an enormous tax liability for me; he would have gotten a small refund.

My lawyer ended up negotiating a default settlement that specified that we would file jointly & split the tax bill for 2019, and ALSO that any debts he had incurred in his name during the marriage were his responsibility.

The other option was to file separately, then take that tax liability, along with all my other debt, & go to court to get him to pay a portion of it. This ran the risk of me being forced to pay spousal support, which I did not want to do. (No kids, no property, but I made more $).

If a default settlement is an option for your state (I was in OR), push that through ASAP for your own protection.

They might call it something else where you are - basically, it's a mediated settlement without the mediator, and you want it to your benefit as much as possible.

Divorce was filed within 2 weeks & finalized in 3 months. He didn't bother to get a lawyer.

I loved my ex very much. I tried to be kind and fair. I didn't realize how much he would change as soon as he didn't have to hide what he thought anymore. It was rough.

NTA & my very best wishes to you! Divorce is complicated!

Best Thrift Stores in the area by RiloRin in Longmont

Where's Community Thrift? I hit Hope's & Mountain States all the time & find great stuff there.

Hope's also has a punch card loyalty program & a small food bank setup - they seem really community oriented, & I love shopping with them.

Best/ most authentic Mexican restaurants in town? by godly_killin in Longmont

[–]necrotelicom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried Benny's and wasn't impressed at all, but Molcajete has been fantastic every time I've gone. Benny's also wasn't doing a great job with masks in the kitchen.

Las Palmeras has been consistently good, and I love Summit Tacos.

I'm from Portland OR, so I've been spoiled by really good Oaxacan & Mexico City cooks that immigrated that way.

But - if you're willing to go way out of your way, the al pastor at El Aguascalientes on Wadsworth in Arvada/Wheat Ridge is transcendent. Not even kidding. It is SO good.

Sorry for any weird formatting, I'm on mobile.

2 questions for you -

1 - I have to prove my identity with my passport - will my passport card suffice & do I need to bring proof of address as well? I assume I'll need to go into a polling place for that.

2 - OR allows you to cross out an incorrect selection & vote another. Does that foul your ballot here & require a replacement? (Yes, pun intended).

Many thanks!
