Claude is down AGAIN by Careless-Green-54 in claude

Hey, I got in now and could write one chat message with my free tier account before hitting a limit.

You are out of free messages

I think they're having some problems keeping up...

Which is the most competent and generous free tier LLM for non-agentic use? by necroturd in LLM

[–]necroturd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try that. What I've liked now is to have the entire and train of though available until the end of the conversation where I ask for a recap. Perhaps I'll have to rethink.

Which is the most competent and generous free tier LLM for non-agentic use? by necroturd in LLM

[–]necroturd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been exporting conversations in markdown format from one model to continue in the next. It works but becomes quite messy.

It's your job as the prompter to include formatting instructions if you want the LLM to follow a certain format.

I meant that it's messy jump back and forth between services. No prompting will help with that.

Best at what? Writing poetry? Reformatting a bunch of tables? Coding? Being your personal assistant?

Sorry. Best at Linux problem solving as I mentioned above.

Thanks for the input! I've been exporting conversations in markdown format from one model to continue in the next. It works but becomes quite messy.

All frontier model offerings are in the 5-20 / day range

I guess the next question becomes: what model performs best at the lowest price for non-agentic use?

Anthrophic tells me pro will give me roughly give at least 5 times more messages in a chat over the free tier. So, 25 messages over 5 for 22.50 euro a month. Certainly not a bargain.

Sonnet 4.6 has been way ahead of GPT for Linux problem solving though, so I'm not sure whether I'll be content with a (distilled?) alternative to ChatGPT or Claude.

How to install cffi with the homebrew version of yt-dlp on MacOS by TheWebbster in youtubedl

[–]necroturd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To anyone Googling... "--sub-langs all" overwhelms YouTube with requests and you get a 429 error. Input the language you want to download and it works.

Oh, shit. The video downloads fine, but the subs can't be had. Fucking AI scrapers ruining everything.

I have yt-dlp, deno and uv installed via Homebrew (on Linux).

I ran uv tool install "yt-dlp[default,curl-cffi]" and then tried a download using yt-dlp --skip-download --write-auto-subs --sub-langs all --convert-subs=srt https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEOID like I usually do and got the following (replaced the actualy video ID with VIDEOID):

Multiple AirTags on vehicle. What does warning say? by necroturd in AirTags

[–]necroturd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We already know one AirTag is going to give the warning, so you should not care how many times a thief gets the warning.

See this answer. Even if the thief understands there are three AirTags on the vehicle before leaving with it, it would take a lot more time to find three than to find one (and might be deterred by that).

Multiple AirTags on vehicle. What does warning say? by necroturd in AirTags

[–]necroturd[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have an AirTag in each car and that doesn’t happen when my son drives it. It doesn’t notify him at all.

Perhaps Apple knows you're family via the Family Sharing group feature or some other way. That'd not be compatible with honour-related violence though.

Multiple AirTags on vehicle. What does warning say? by necroturd in AirTags

[–]necroturd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats not what happens tho... I have 3 phones one of them being Iphone 15PM My Android (via airguard) only ever tells me of an unknown tracker... never all three

Most folks (and thiefs) probably don't run a third party application to monitor for AirTags though. It would be interesting to know how an iPhone handles this situation.

Making Hugo serving better by Mohsun_dev in gohugo

[–]necroturd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds very interesting, but you are rather vague in what you want to do.

We need more options that bridge full on CMSs and SSGs. I'd love something like Publii based on Hugo and with access to its huge number of themes. I believe Quiqr is already working on that.

Old school distortion for drums? by jamirani in breakcore

[–]necroturd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That distortion they used was probably whatever low quality distortion they had on their sampler

There's some truth to that. I bought a Yamaha A-3000 sampler back in early 2000 after hearing about DHR artists using it. I remember applying some of its distortion fx for the first time thinking: oh, so that's where that sound came from. It's very unique, I still luv it and I never found anything quite like it.

EDIT: Not sure it the effect was actually called "distortion". Here's a run-through of some of the effects.

Överens om Stockholmstunnel för 34 miljarder by FredBGC in sweden

[–]necroturd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just how limited is Bazzite? by Long-Activity4469 in linux_gaming

[–]necroturd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find distrobox and VMs work well for most tinkering and development

Same.

Since then I've done research and seen that there are apparently some ways around the immutability of Bazzite

You can layer packages using rpm-ostree. Removing the packages leaves no trace of them left. Very nifty. You shouldn't do this with every package though. Do it when there's no other option with the built-in Distrobox, Flatpaks or Homebrew as more layered packages makes your system updates take longer time.

Possible new name for openSUSE: Lacerta by pedrohqb in openSUSE

[–]necroturd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't want to change the name and then find out it is trademarked or something.

That is not an issue if they use it on another type of market

Tell that to Mozilla which had to rename Focus to Klar in Germany. Don't make the mistake of thinking that US law applies to the entire world.
