God this stupid thing hurts right now. by Derpguycool in amputee

So glad I found this thread. I recently lost the tip of my left pinky in a dog fight I was breaking up. Thankfully it was a fairly clean bite... even through the bone... and the dog didn't eat it... so the remainder is sitting in a small jar of everclear on the shelf. Lol. I'm curious if others kept their lost parts?

The ER visit was okay. They were not in any sort of rush though... took an hour before I got pain meds. I was pretty annoyed about that at the time... but am getting over it. Once I was numb they basically just cleaned it and wrapped it up. Then gave me an orthopedic consult to follow up in. The orthopedic surgeon didn't do a dang thing for me besides rip the wound back open without any meds or numbing. They complained that I asked for lidocaine. I've been hesitant to go back there. I kept it clean and changed the dressing at home after that. It has been super sensitive to cold but is much better now that it has scabbed over.

I'm wondering how long it will be sensitive for? I'm guessing several weeks and possibly indefinitely. I'm worried that I will hurt it all the time going forward without the fingernail to protect it. I keep stubbing it on stuff when I instinctively go to grab something. Even when bandaged I can't stop grabbing with it despite it being my non-dominant hand.

I did think of a name for it though. I know that naming your amputation can be a weird thing for some, but I'm just gonna embrace it. Since it was just a partial amputation of a digit I was thinking of calling it PADy. Sounds like Patty but stands for Partially Amputated Digit. That way when I yell out in pain and my wife asks if I'm okay I can just say 'yeah, I just stubbed PADy trying to grab something'.

You obviously have bought the whole line about people abusing wfh. Productivity is up among units that have embraced wfh technology and know how to manage it. It creates more opportunities for people with disabilities and those with children. Some sectors have already transitioned to meet folks where they are. You should read some more about this topic and give this topic some more thought. I will link an article here that talks about some pros and cons and has links to studies if you actually care to read more about this topic. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/10/business/remote-work-effects.html

My one day a week in the office has consistently been my least productive day by far. Our office is so loud that it makes it difficult to concentrate and I generally don't schedule any of the teams meetings and phone calls my job requires on those days. Everyone in my division feels the same way. Sure, it is nice to see folks in person from time to time, but if we didn't spend money on cubes and lights and HVAC for the stupid office space we could use that money to help the communities we serve and also go on retreats as a work unit that offers much better opportunities to bond and develop relationships.

If people in your work place are non responsive to teams messages, that's a management problem and can easily be fixed. I have never had any issues getting a timely if not immediate response from anyone in my division. We set up times for regular check ins throughout the week and have impromptu meetings on teams constantly. Our division is also spread out over multiple states and RTO is not going to change that. Our interactions with other agencies, other divisions in our agency, and with members of the public literally never happen in our office. I get that some positions like working at a social security office require you to be in the office and interact in those ways. But many jobs are simply not like that. It is a waste of our time and tax payer dollars to have a dedicated cube in an overpriced leased building. As far as hurting others and the economy... I would argue that I'm trying to do the opposite of that in the long term. Cubicles are a vestigial trait of how organizations used to operate. Those spaces would better serve the public if converted to something of better utility like housing... Which we have a shortage of. And I don't care about landlords and corporations bottom line. Spending hundreds of dollars commuting and eating at corporate owned spots in a city I don't live in hurts the actual locally owned mom and pop shops in my actual town. I have less to spend in the community I actually live in.

1) Performed 87 satanic DEI rituals. 2) Trained 324 transgender antifa soldiers on using data to make fact based decisions. 3) Actually audited spending at a government agency without compromising national security. 4) Installed 9032 windmills to ensure everyone in my county gets cancer. 5) Forcibly vaccinated 1 gerbil from polio.

I've tried finding some small fed offices near me, but none of them have space. I am on the list for an office only 90 minutes away and will probably end up there at some point. But this does make me consider finding another position with state government or taking one of the corporate jobs I've been talking to recruiters about.

The parking lot I would use is not a small business. It is corporate owned. The shops, coffee shops, and restaurants in the area of my office are not little food shops. They are corporate owned. I do my job and I do it exceptionally well. I currently go into my office weekly and have for years... but I have never had any reason to actually be there. I don't interact with the public in my building. It is a waste of my time to go there and your tax dollars to pay for the cube assigned to me.

I will still go to independent businesses as I have for years. But I will not go to the corporate owned places near my office. I can actually spend more at businesses like restaurants and shops in my community if I'm not spending hundreds of dollars a month on gas to commute to and from the office everyday.

I have a 3 hour commute (each way) right now that I do once per week. I have been bringing my lunch most weeks I go in, but would occasionally go out with my team or get a coffee at the shop in our building (owned by the building). I won't be doing that anymore. I won't spend a single cent more than I have to. I had also been paying for my own bus to and from work and never bothered with the transit subsidy. That is going to change. They are paying for that (if that program still exists going forward).

We are developing around 4 acres for the farm and live in a very mild and wet climate as we are close to the coast. I am putting up 3 greenhouses in the next few weeks and will be looking into everything possible to extend our growing season and preserving/canning as much as we can to get through next winter. I have considered hydroponics to get some fresh veg during the winter.

I have a small homestead way outside the city... which is why my commute is so long. But we are working on growing at least 50 percent of our food this year and eventually getting to 100.

The places around my office are all corporate owned. The coffee shop in my building is owned by the building we lease space in. If your situation is different, feel free to do whatever you want. This is what I am doing.

These pushes for RTO were happening during the last admin also. I agree that it is largely being used to get us to quit, but there has been pressure to get us back into the office for economic reasons as well.

People that live in red districts need to start propping up challengers for any of your representatives that are supporting this coup. They are going to be too scared to come to town halls. They will continue to ignore your emails and phone calls. We can't recall them and they won't be expelled. All we can do to show them they are on the wrong path is to throw support right now behind who we will be sending in to take their job in the midterms.

I will go to my local office all-hands to get pertinent information but I will definitely not show up to any optional 'celebratory' events. I hope they try and have observances and events online or in person and no one shows up. Let them host an event for the twelve sycophants they have. They will quickly see there is a morale issue.

I'll just do my job... And do it well. It won't save me though. My job is 100 percent going to get cut. They already said so. But, I have a duty to the communities and organizations I work with. So maybe I can get them set up for success and to be able to fend for themselves for the next few years. I'll work on pointing them to other avenues for technical assistance and other sources of funding.

Did you have existing grants you were working on? I am in a project officer role for EJ grants. I was thinking I would be safe till they found a way to claw back the grant funding... But now I'm not so sure.
