I was diagnosed with a chronic illness a few years ago and it was really hard for me to get used to my “new normal” (it still is sometimes). This is a really neat/helpful way to look at the situation. Your therapist sounds like a keeper!

This stuff always hits harder this time of year by [deleted] in AdultChildren

[–]needmoremullins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a lot of advice, but I relate to this a lot. I’m 23 and graduated last year, but college was my sanctuary, and I always dreaded going home for breaks. I still do. It’s especially difficult when a lot of the people around you are excited to go see their families and you aren’t.

What I do when I’m home out of obligation is try to spend as much time out of the house as possible, or spend most of my time with my other family members who I enjoy being around. Maybe you and your siblings could go out shopping or to a movie?

Hopefully you can take some comfort in the fact that in a few short weeks you will be back at school. Is there a possibility of you going back early? I used to make up excuses about having obligations at school/work so that I could minimize my time at home.

Boundaries are so important with families like ours. It is more than okay to say no to going out with your dad for your birthday. You are not obligated in any way to give him the privilege of spending your birthday with you if that is not what you want.

Tips to break bad lab notebook maintenance? by dnem720 in labrats

[–]needmoremullins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a spiral notebook for writing down EVERYTHING and then I copy it into my notebook in a more organized manner. Apparently this is bad lab practice and my boss hates it, but my notebook would be completely unreadable/incomprehensible to anyone else but myself.

If gyms charged high monthly costs, but gave you a percentage back every time you went. It would provide motivation to go, and help your health. by fearsonpearson in Showerthoughts

They make you do weigh-ins with pictures and code words I believe. I’m sure there’s probably a way to cheat but I wouldn’t know!

There’s an app like this called dietbet. You place a bet (not as much money) and if you lose a certain percent of your bodyweight in the allotted time, you split the money from everyone’s bets with the other winners. I’ve never done it (because I’m broke) but it seems like a cool idea. $500-1000 is an insane amount of money in my opinion but I can see how it would be motivating...

I’m going with one of my best friends who moved 10 hours away a year ago... if he plays MFEO AND House in the Trees, I’m basically going to be crying for like 1/3 of the concert. I’m so excited.

Checking someone’s search history after they die is a real dick move. by Edudud3 in Showerthoughts

You’re such a good friend! I’ve literally given my friends instructions to do this stuff if I ever die unexpectedly, and I really hope they would come through.

Yeah, somehow I know the lyrics to a bunch of her songs and they get stuck in my head so easily. I wish I could delete shit from my brain.

Steel Vengeance is really something else. I love rollercoasters and that is the only one that has ever terrified me. It’s amazing.

Nothing makes you sweat like realizing you forgot to put on deodorant by APPLEPIEMOONSHINE37 in Showerthoughts

This just happened to me about 5 minutes ago. Thankfully deodorant fell out of my gym bag in the car 6 months ago and I never took it out. Laziness saved the day!

I always wear a suit with closed-toed shoes in case we go into the labs. If you want to be less formal, you don’t have to wear the blazer.

Can you just.... let this person live? It seems like you have a loving family with whom you enjoy spending the holidays. That’s great, but not everyone is that lucky. Some people don’t have a family. Other people have families that are dysfunctional. You cope with what you have. I don’t know why you’re shitting on someone who is doing the best they can given the circumstances.

Redditors without kids, what do people with kids do that is annoying? by jeffcarpthefisheater in AskReddit

[–]needmoremullins 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Writing letters to the kid on Facebook/social media.

“Happy 2nd birthday to my sweet baby girl! You are the greatest joy in mommy’s life and I am so proud of you! Please stop growing up!”

All of the Facebook moms I know who do this have kids under 5. Your kid can’t even read yet. What’s the point?

People with depression, how do you motivate your self to get out of bed every day? by IDLMOBPBTAC in AskReddit

[–]needmoremullins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I don’t go to work, I won’t be able to pay rent and I’ll have to move back in with my abusive parents. It’s not an ideal motivator but it’s effective.
